@MustaffaCuppa Interesting comment - I think it's 4, 2, 4, 3 then a straight 4 in a bar 4 a while then changes to 3 again at the words "I, I, I". Great stuff!
look at phil, looks like hes just come straight from the pub in that shirt! top class song tho always seem to drive a bit faster than normal when ive got this on!!
@mertz123 Wow think you're the only person commenting with the correct time signature :) 13/8 slips into a straight 8/8 here and there too - would make for an interesting dance routine for sure.
Dunno why someone gave you a thumbs down for that comment lol. Yeah it's musically a very clever song with the beats per bar and chord sequence etc. This is my fave Genesis song along with The Brazilian. Love it!
yo no se ingles pero me gusta demasiado mas que todo por su musica es mi grupo favorito tony banks para mi el mejor tecladista del mundo genesis por siempre
this is probably one of my favourite genesis albums . everything is just amazing .phil,s drumming of course awesome and tony,s writing duchess in particular cool. behind the lines opens with power and sets you up for a great ride .i also love man of our times and misunderstanding these were better days i reckon.
Actually, I believe if there are, for instance, four bars that go in 4/4 out of which the last ends before the four beats have gone (say, after 7 or 6 1/8) then there is a feeling fracture; and there is also change in time signature.
(Also, to Hipnoxx: I believe waltzes were written in 3/4, if I remember correctly.)
Actually the structure is quite complex. From WP, "The song is also characterised by a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for pop music, with verse/chorus sections in 13/4 (6/4 to 7/4), while the intro and bridge sections are in 4/4 and 5/8."
His is pretty good, remember him playing live over here at Live AId, and playing live in Philadelphia a few hours later. Absolutely amazing and this is fantastic, sun roof open, trouble is that it makes your foot go down hard on the accelerator. Not good!!
So many people of my parents' generation are a bit snobbish about Phil Collins era Genesis and go on about Peter Gabriel but really, how can you beat this? I heard this driving along the motorway the other day and it knocked me for six - I'd forgotten how fantastic Genesis really were.
tresspass,,,,,nursery chryme,,,,,selling england by the pound......foxtrot....the lamb lies down....a trick of the tail....wind and wuthering.....seconds out.....and then there were 3.....abacab....duke....genesis....3 sides live......and so it goes on....its not over until the fat lady sings......genesis forever.
you have to hear this song when you`re driving thru holiday on the autobahn. beautiful wether and beautiful songs. i´m sure you wish the ride never ends ;)
It should be said since 1978 Phil Mike and Tony, did it well since then! No more complaining the peter gabriel fans, as they are always doing suggesting that it was better music ?! Genesis brought sincethen *they were 3 again* and *Duke* some best music and eversince!!! I found the transforming better than ever, without Peter.
When Peter left, they seached and searched..and Phil wasn't sure he had enough..then came Trick of The Tail...Ripples, Squonk, Robbery Assault and Battery, Dance a Volcano..oh yah he had enough...
Lots of people don't know that Phil auditioned with Yes right before he joined
Those of you who say the band wasn't what it used to be after peter left needs there head examined. Phil I think helped introduce a new chapter in the familiar Genesis sound. Being a child of the 80's, this is the version of genesis I remember best. I think it worked as I see it now as an adult, I will agree that for some bands that line up change does not always work for everyone. I liked the band Chicago better with Peter Cintera. When he left, it wasn't quite the same.
Capital FDIC!...nahh, saviour any friends that oui may have!...How Could I Save You!...(this game is so the powers of communion!)..but, Rock n Roll!..-rxsczr/peace-
I disagree creepycooper. Phil coming to the front lead to their downfall. Peter Gabriel was and always will be the one and only front man of Genesis for me. The band just wasn't the same after he left. Phil commercialized the band.
I disagree...so many bands have folded because one member or another have left.....Genesis continued to thrive after Peter Gabriel left....commercial or not, Genesis still has it after all these years!
The whole dynamic of the band changed...all the theatrics that Peter brought were gone . I actually wasn't a fan until 1978, well after he left. It wasn't until after I discovered "early" Genesis that I fully appreciated what they were all about. After Peter left, they were no longer about a concept. Don't get me wrong, I still loved them. Just never thought Phil could fill those shoes.
The only reason diehard Genesis fans dislike the trio is because they became too mainstream and commercial which if you ask me is better in a plethora of ways.
The best thing to happen to Genesis was Phil Collins coming to front them, i don't want to offend Peter Gabriel fans it's just an opinion, infact i think PG is a better solo artist.
forestgumpaed....my fave band,i happen to have most of there albums(about 20 or so)this is happens to be my fave.i recommend albums, and then there were three, nursery chryme and seconds out(live)
Hey, I didn´t know that Phil Collins had a stand-in twin brother behind the drums. Or is he really that fast a runner? And yeah, the guys were young, since it´s almost thirty years ago, 1980.
genial genesis!! j'adore!! oui je suis francaise et j'adore!! et les autres frenchies qui aiment ils sont ou pour mettre des commentaires??? moi j'adore!!!!
Yes, please get your facts straight before you decide to post something. Peter left and the band asked Phil to sing because they couldn't find anyone to fill the spot, even though Phil originally did not want to take the spot.
I was born in 1976.
Phil Collins and Phil Collins in Genesis are tops. All this retro-revisionistic BS kills me. Phil Collins ruled the world almost.

There are some weird time signatures or measures per beat here; it isn't the regular 4/4 you hear on radio all the time.

of course it is, what do you reckon this is? a friggin' waltz? just listen to the drums dude no big deal
