  • I was born in 1976.

Phil Collins and Phil Collins in Genesis are tops. All this retro-revisionistic BS kills me. Phil Collins ruled the world almost.

  • :) :)

  • hey angeline6 ... totally agree with everything you say....this is just a great song

  • @FarCryification Wikipedia, Select, Copy, Paste. :D

  • still an absolute quality song even though i was 1 when it was recorded exelant

  • 30 years ago when genesis were cool...still a great song

  • ... that and the radio ... I have known you for so long. Since 1980 in fact and in my bedroom. Can I touch you for a while?

  • Genesis are pure gold! you just don't get quality like this anymore.

  • very great song. I love

  • classic nuff said........................

  • Bellissima.. ^^

  • Short but sweet

  • Almost as good as it gets.........

  • Very very good use of synthesizers!!! Tony Branks is the best :-D

  • @Elettronico94

    its Tony BANKS lol

  • I love this song. The irregular number of beats here and there make it extra interesting. Great.

Plus it's nice to see Phil with hair!

  • @MustaffaCuppa Interesting comment - I think it's 4, 2, 4, 3 then a straight 4 in a bar 4 a while then changes to 3 again at the words "I, I, I". Great stuff!

  • @rabengeraun I've head Phil Collins say this is 13/4 time

  • fanbloodytastic

  • look at phil, looks like hes just come straight from the pub in that shirt! top class song tho always seem to drive a bit faster than normal when ive got this on!!

  • class

  • no bass guitar in genesis?

  • @cm1179

Tony Branks uses a bass pedal, the Moog Taurus. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!

    My favourite Genesis song!

  • @Saukuko least you can see Genesis for their music and talent and not rubbish like "the lead singer". ;)

  • Thats not Phil...it's Hugh Dennis

  • @1968mjh lolwut

  • i hate to say it,not really being a fan,but phil collins was a splendid singer back in the day.

  • A REAL drummers track this one. I`d forgot how brilliant this track was - 3:46 that I can spend re-living my youth again!

  • 13/8 sig.

would LOVE to dance to this in a club and watch everyone admire me stay in time. hhaha

  • @mertz123 Wow think you're the only person commenting with the correct time signature :) 13/8 slips into a straight 8/8 here and there too - would make for an interesting dance routine for sure.

  • god he was so thin in 1980...he looked much fatter in 1981

  • He was bearded in 1980 too at one point...

  • My favourite intro into a song ever. Absolute magic

  • My Favourate genesis song.

  • Can't help turning this one on again.

The longest wait ever for the hook of a song.

  • What an excellent song! It reminds me when I was 5 years old, in 1980, same year as the song. Those where truly great times for music.

  • Fucking luv this song too!

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone know the verse is in 13/8?

    Crazy!

  • Dunno why someone gave you a thumbs down for that comment lol. Yeah it's musically a very clever song with the beats per bar and chord sequence etc. This is my fave Genesis song along with The Brazilian. Love it!

  • Phil Collins said that when Genesis first started they played at a club and just one person turned up !!!! Look at them now.Truly awesome.

  • DOWN ON MY LOVE AGAIN!

  • it is only clip when Phil was so thin.

  • listen to those amazing harmonies. i love Genesis.

    hey J xxxxx

  • Awesome Song / Video / Band......Period......

  • agreed. legendary

  • Simply LEGENDARY!!!!! Never gets old!!!

  • He play drums and sing at the same time, but not at the "same" time, they must have recorded the video twice. Take a look.

  • touches everyrone genius ok my spelings crap lol

  • Longest wait for the hook in any popular music track ever. Well worth the wait.

  • Nice observation but I think Money for Nothing takes longer.

  • Phil Coillins and co are awesome

  • yo no se ingles pero me gusta demasiado mas que todo por su musica es mi grupo favorito tony banks para mi el mejor tecladista del mundo genesis por siempre

  • Phil Collins and Genesis is Epic ! =)

  • I think the main keyboard+guitar riff should be equally as legendary as something like "Kashmir".

  • just brilliant!!

  • Can't help turning this one on again.

  • can t help turning all of Genesis again...

  • this is probably one of my favourite genesis albums . everything is just amazing .phil,s drumming of course awesome and tony,s writing duchess in particular cool. behind the lines opens with power and sets you up for a great ride .i also love man of our times and misunderstanding these were better days i reckon.

  • Actually, I believe if there are, for instance, four bars that go in 4/4 out of which the last ends before the four beats have gone (say, after 7 or 6 1/8) then there is a feeling fracture; and there is also change in time signature.

(Also, to Hipnoxx: I believe waltzes were written in 3/4, if I remember correctly.)

  • There are some weird time signatures or measures per beat here; it isn't the regular 4/4 you hear on radio all the time.

  • of course it is, what do you reckon this is? a friggin' waltz? just listen to the drums dude no big deal

  • Actually the structure is quite complex. From WP, "The song is also characterised by a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for pop music, with verse/chorus sections in 13/4 (6/4 to 7/4), while the intro and bridge sections are in 4/4 and 5/8."

  • His is pretty good, remember him playing live over here at Live AId, and playing live in Philadelphia a few hours later. Absolutely amazing and this is fantastic, sun roof open, trouble is that it makes your foot go down hard on the accelerator. Not good!!

  • I wish I could grow a beard like Mike Rutherford!

  • I love this song :)

  • So many people of my parents' generation are a bit snobbish about Phil Collins era Genesis and go on about Peter Gabriel but really, how can you beat this? I heard this driving along the motorway the other day and it knocked me for six - I'd forgotten how fantastic Genesis really were.

  • One of their finest songs!

  • LoL, Phil stands at the microphone and is playing the drumms in the same song :O How possible?

    ;-)

  • Clone of course :-)

  • Good Song Good Singer.

  • Yeah, haha ''not the crazy cant even hear what there saying meta''. .But rap wil die and rock 'll come back.

  • from genesis to revelation..,

tresspass,,,,,nursery chryme,,,,,selling england by the pound......foxtrot....the lamb lies down....a trick of the tail....wind and wuthering.....seconds out.....and then there were 3.....abacab....duke....genesis....3 sides live......and so it goes on....its not over until the fat lady sings......genesis forever.

  • Hmm, I'm more for the Gabriel-era stuff, but this isn't bad. I wish I could grow a beard like Mike Rutherford, though.

  • Klaasie50 : Iwas just saying the same thing to myself

  • why not just press reply instead of putting their username?

  • lol yeh

  • świetny kawałek...pozdrawiam fanów Genesis

  • I am totally buttmuthafuckin naked right now in my bath-tub listening to this, got my laptop right here. Life is good.

  • thanks for that

  • Phil Collins sounds a lot better with Genesis than his solo efforts.

  • Genesis rocks. Period.

  • damm, i wish I was born 20 years earlier

  • favorite song by genesis

  • Awesome riff!

  • turn it ooo oo oo on turn it on turn it on again

  • Phil I love you! Will you marry me?

  • Yes

  • What `yes` baby, will you marry me? When?

  • Love this song and the autobahn! I miss Germany! Good Times and Friends!

  • you have to hear this song when you`re driving thru holiday on the autobahn. beautiful wether and beautiful songs. i´m sure you wish the ride never ends ;)

  • I wish I could experience that! Good for you!

  • All I need is a TV show....

  • that and a radio..... :)

  • that and the radio

  • i can show you i can show you some of the people in my life...

  • Genesis rocks.

  • I was on their concert 2007 in Manchester, and guess what, they still got it, it was awsome!

  • come a long way bless him/them.......enjoy ya money yous earnt it

  • love it

  • Phil should go out for the track team - he's so quick in getting behind the drums and then frontstage again!!!

    Seriously: GREAT STUFF GUYS!

    God bless you!!!

  • one of there best....brilliant!!!

  • FABULOUS!

  • classic!!!!!!!! i love this

  • Driving along on a warm sunny day, this on the radio and trying not to let the speed creep up too much. Wonderfui song played very loud!!

  • I like the lack of plot in this vid...Genisis lets the songs speak for themselves. Very good editing call.

  • it's FANTASTIC! they've been genial with this songs. The chords are simple but wonderful.

  • 1:28. Classic Jupiter 8 sound. Rad..

  • i like this song, i don't know why, but I like it

  • I LOVE this song!!!!!!

  • I wonder how old they were in this clip?

  • 30. It was 1980, Tony and Mike were born 1950, Phil January 1951

  • It should be said since 1978 Phil Mike and Tony, did it well since then! No more complaining the peter gabriel fans, as they are always doing suggesting that it was better music ?! Genesis brought sincethen *they were 3 again* and *Duke* some best music and eversince!!! I found the transforming better than ever, without Peter.

  • Singing, drumming, and BAGPIPES!!!!! Phil's a triple threat! (he's a pretty darned good piper!)

  • Thanks for enlightening me, Rgrdovic.

  • Great song, but who the hell is playing the drums if he's singing? Drum machining?

  • very good song phil is a great performer

  • OMFG!

    collins did have hair xD

great voice and great songs he composed

  • genius.

  • It's good to hear this again.....

  • One of the ballsyist of his vocals....

    So Genesis..what a song.

When Peter left, they seached and searched..and Phil wasn't sure he had enough..then came Trick of The Tail...Ripples, Squonk, Robbery Assault and Battery, Dance a Volcano..oh yah he had enough...

Lots of people don't know that Phil auditioned with Yes right before he joined

    Genesis..

  • Never has a listener waited longer for the hook.

  • My fave Genesis tune! But not my fave all time

    Phil tune though.

  • eight thirteenth notes on the bar would be something...

  • Can't help turning this one on again.

  • Phil is one of the most relaxed drummers I have seen. He makes it look so bloody easy!

  • I like how Phil can be in two places at once (playing drums, and singing)

  • Because it's a music video.

  • For all you musicians out there, this song is in 8/13 time. Find a band today that could even entertain doing a song in that rhythm! Real genius!

  • Comment removed

  • Don't you mean 13/8?

  • Yes I do mean 13/8.....eeeeee. I must have had a longer day than I thought!! Thanks for the timing correction. Still a kickin' song!!

  • 13/8, and Dream Theater

  • Tool , there you go..

  • parts between the chorus and verse sound like 8/8 to me, but I haven't seen a score.

  • 8/13

  • 13/8.

  • 13/8, not 8/13, lol

  • Those of you who say the band wasn't what it used to be after peter left needs there head examined. Phil I think helped introduce a new chapter in the familiar Genesis sound. Being a child of the 80's, this is the version of genesis I remember best. I think it worked as I see it now as an adult, I will agree that for some bands that line up change does not always work for everyone. I liked the band Chicago better with Peter Cintera. When he left, it wasn't quite the same.

  • This song takes me way back 2 when I was soo little! Love this song!

  • Capital FDIC!...nahh, saviour any friends that oui may have!...How Could I Save You!...(this game is so the powers of communion!)..but, Rock n Roll!..-rxsczr/peace-

  • esta rola tiene toda la esecencia dl rock!

    genesis!!

  • I disagree creepycooper. Phil coming to the front lead to their downfall. Peter Gabriel was and always will be the one and only front man of Genesis for me. The band just wasn't the same after he left. Phil commercialized the band.

  • I disagree...so many bands have folded because one member or another have left.....Genesis continued to thrive after Peter Gabriel left....commercial or not, Genesis still has it after all these years!

  • The whole dynamic of the band changed...all the theatrics that Peter brought were gone . I actually wasn't a fan until 1978, well after he left. It wasn't until after I discovered "early" Genesis that I fully appreciated what they were all about. After Peter left, they were no longer about a concept. Don't get me wrong, I still loved them. Just never thought Phil could fill those shoes.

  • The only reason diehard Genesis fans dislike the trio is because they became too mainstream and commercial which if you ask me is better in a plethora of ways.

  • The best thing to happen to Genesis was Phil Collins coming to front them, i don't want to offend Peter Gabriel fans it's just an opinion, infact i think PG is a better solo artist.

  • Que bueno!! este hombre es crema!

  • forestgumpaed....my fave band,i happen to have most of there albums(about 20 or so)this is happens to be my fave.i recommend albums, and then there were three, nursery chryme and seconds out(live)

  • such an amazing band....this stuff is burned into my childhood memories.....

  • i love this song, one of my all time favs

  • its a pity my wife and sister in law helen just cant dance kt.

  • YEAH!

  • phil collins looks like christopher meloni in his younger days

  • thats rock n roll xx

  • Hey, I didn´t know that Phil Collins had a stand-in twin brother behind the drums. Or is he really that fast a runner? And yeah, the guys were young, since it´s almost thirty years ago, 1980.

  • Holy crap, look at how young they all are here...lOL

  • Hal - 2001 - A silly 4 word joke

  • Video Concert Hall...WOW!!! Those were the days!

  • genial genesis!! j'adore!! oui je suis francaise et j'adore!! et les autres frenchies qui aiment ils sont ou pour mettre des commentaires??? moi j'adore!!!!

  • Another Video Concert Hal memory.

  • I mean Hall. Not Hal.

  • What are you doing Dave

  • Ah....the song that made me a fan of Genesis in 1982. Still my favorite.

  • This was Phil going through the"im purposly trying to sound like Peter" phase!!

  • Couldn't disagree more.

  • Listen to a Genesis song from the time, then a Peter Gabriel one (both released albums in 1980) then you will see the differences...

  • Yes, please get your facts straight before you decide to post something. Peter left and the band asked Phil to sing because they couldn't find anyone to fill the spot, even though Phil originally did not want to take the spot.

  • Exquisite. Phil can show you some of the people in his life!
