@aidude55. I have quickly learned that things vary depending on associations ect. I am with the Uktkf and we use:

White-red, Kihon kata

Red-orange, heian shodan

Orange-yellow, heian nidan

Yellow-green, heian sandan

Green-purple, heian yondan

Purple-purple/white, heian godan

Purple/white to brown, tekki shodan

Brown-brown (2) and brown (2) to brown/white, bassai.

Brown/white-black, bassai and 2 others as chosen by examiner.

last week i was a white belt on sunday the 17th december i was at my grading ok but before that my sensei taught me the red belt kata and the white belt kata so then i was at the grading and he asked me to do my white belt kata and i passed it and then he told me to do the red belt kata and i passed then he told me to do some moves and i did and i passed everything including the 5 step commute and i skipped being a red belt and i am a orange belt now :D i was shocked that i skipped a belt :D :D

Cool, im doing doing for my green belt too! I wish u lots of luck! Katas may be a bit stressful in exams or in competitions but once u start it, i dont care about the rest, I just focus and BAM! Either u get ur belt in exams or a medal in a competition! (But dont forget practice is also the key!)

When i was going to have my yellow belt, i was sooooooooo nervous. It went really really well, and they ended up giving me the orange belt instead. so i passed yellow and i never had a yellow belt. people were really jealous but i was very happy :) unfortunately i stopped doing karate. I didn't had the time in the end . <3

Thats a shame. I did that in 1994 and regretted it so much. I got so busy in the office. When I did karate in the 90s I was super fit (cycling 20 miles a day etc) and getting back into karate was a shock when I did (a few years ago). I'm now a Shotokan purple belt. I LOVE IT. Best thing in my life, apart from my wife and son.

@estlib i would go for them but if u want simpler ones choose these options if u want easier pick these katas :

sandan, yondon and nidan if u want them easier but depends how good u are if u are good and know kata's well i would go for nidan, go dan and yon dan for higher marks hope this helps =)

The Kick isn't actually a kick, its a defense. Think of a maegery or a low puch coming at you, and you avoid that with your leg.

The elbow is used to block the punch while the kick hits the attackers leg!!!! Otherwise their is know point having that arm in that position.

@MrGamerBazer You are right i misread your original comment. Blocking a punch with a kick is a waste of energy unless you kick while he just happens to be throwing a punch. One of my bunkai for that kick is to position in front of person when he is by your side and the elbow is trapping a part if his body to throw or trip in front of you.

Just i found that since shotokan has been "mondernized" (not sure if thats spelt right) but it seems alot of techniques have been lost and replaced. For example ur first example of bunkai is a very used technique throughout many clubs. And i cant stand it XD

Interesting. Comparing the Shotokan and Shito-ryu styles is interesting. The movements are different, yet the kata are some-what the same.

Oh, by the way, do some schools learn Pinan/Heian Nidan (or shodan, the one with the lots of nekowashi-dachi) after Pinan/Heian Sandan?

This is my favourite kata. As for the comments about belt colour. The colouring regardless of the club should go from lighter to darker as you progress. The purpose in the different colours is so the sensei can quickly deduce who knows what when splitting the class off.
