At some point, they turned it around and used it as a term of endearment to slap racists in the face and give it less power. Racism does need to be discussed and dealt with. Wendy, you are right. It's something that parents and we as society need to deal with. It is hard to overcome the prejudicial imprinting and stereotyping we were exposed to as children and it would be best if we can reduce the acceptance of negative stereotyping. The recent push in the media to accept profiling is a big negative. Good for you having this as a topic and asking the tough questions about the best way forward.

Being a bi-racial, African (because my mom was born in Liberia), Irish, Caucasian, Canadian, French, Cuban, & Native American (my Dad is part Sioux) this is always a sensitive topic for me. For me growing up (in the late 80's), I was too dark for the white kids, but too light for the black kids, and I had the nerve to have a biological white father. But what I've learned is that ultimately, you get stronger through the experience.

At some point, they turned it around and used it as a term of endearment to slap racists in the face and give it less power. Racism does need to be discussed and dealt with. Wendy, you are right. It's something that parents and we as society need to deal with. It is hard to overcome the prejudicial imprinting and stereotyping we were exposed to as children and it would be best if we can reduce the acceptance of negative stereotyping. The recent push in the media to accept profiling is a big negative. Good for you having this as a topic and asking the tough questions about the best way forward.

The first time that I dealt with any racism was outside the confines of our house. I was 8 years old, and I was watching "Jem and the Holograms" (yeah, I was gay even then). And a then 7 year old walks up to me, and asks, "What are YOU?!?"

The point I'm making is that regardless if you are white, black, Hispanic, Asian, a smurf, we all need to be making efforts with our children to have open dialog and help them understand that no race is the "elite" race. Much like my parents did.

"Youre stupid" "you stink" They dont care WHATSOEVER about others feelings. Being a bi-racial, African (because my mom was born in Liberia), Irish, Caucasian, Canadian, French, Cuban, & Native American (my Dad is part Sioux) this is always a sensitive topic for me. For me growing up (in the late 80's), I was too dark for the white kids, but too light for the black kids, and I had the nerve to have a biological white father. But what I've learned is that ultimately, you get stronger through the experience.

letting kids kno that they live in a dominant white society is not being a racist....back then there was a difference and her parents were letting her know that she had to be careful concerning the color of her skin. thats not being racist but careful. black kids couldnt do all the same things white kids could in the 1960s because rascism was running rampant and black kids were "judged harder". so i think her parents are totally appropriate and so is she..

My parents took small opportunities to to inform me of the injustice that goes on in our society. I'm sixteen now, and I dont have any unhealthy complexes. It's really important to discuss it sometimes, but not to make it the central theme of every conversation, and not to overlook other important topics.
No one said parenting would be easy, but people have to do a good job in order to ensure happier children and a better world.
