  • thought these guys were pretty decent .... definately funny ..... even though back then they didn't play all the music for their songs .... but now they do. put out quite a bit of great songs .... nostalgia upswing!

  • They are still sexy !

  • Another one of the great song that Mr. Mike Nesmith wrote.

  • That was actually one of the cutest things I've ever seen....the hug at the beginning, and they looked like they had so much fun during, and THE WALK!!! So cute!!! :D

  • Davy asked for a "round of applause." Ah...those days before the mandatory "give it up for..." or "put your hands together."

  • At 10 seconds, who poked Mike to see if he was real?

  • @SuperEcwchampion That was Micky who poked Mike. :)

  • Thank you....I didn't know footage of this existed.I only saw still photos of this.I love music since I was a little kid and the Monkees and the Beatles are the only groups that have given me total joy.Thanx again

  • It would have been nostalgic if Mike would have come out on stage wearing his wool hat, for old times sake, bet that would have looked cool. :)

  • i will never forgive you Mike for dropping out of that tour in 86! i have seen the reuinion tour over the years and have always wished to see you perform with them! I just saw them on the 2011 reuion and wished that just once you would make an appearance!

  • Mike with the guys. That is the way it's supossed to be!!!

  • Not quite Davy and Mickey both had non Monkees careers. Mickey directed television in Britain and was an artist. Davy took to training and racing horses. He also returned to Broadway.

  • Mike’s career was a busy one. His career in music video development as ”The grandfather” of MTV is well documented. He won the first video award for his film “Elephant Parts.” His Pacific Arts Company pioneered the genre for many years. He also had a hit band called “The First National Band. that scored with top songs “Joanne” and Silver Moon.”

  • So, apart from a bit of rhythm guitar playing (and tambourine) the Monkees clearly gave up the pretense of being a band on their reunion tours.

  • omg...wow...wish I was at this show...thanks so much for sharing this with Us...

  • God No wonder Mike left... did you see Davy Dance next to him?

  • What a bunch of cornball dopes, but God help me, I love them.

  • I don't get it. They're GREAT together! Why did Nesmith have to be such a dick all the rest of the time. Was it because he feared his celebrity in the band would sabotage his solo career? Nesmith had established himself as a star solo artist with his "Flying Down To Rio" video so I hardly see how it could, and he sure seems to relish the attention he gets from the fans and his old band-mates. Too damn bad this didn't happen a lot more often. Definitely would have paid top buck to see them live.

  • @spacemonkey1463 He's not a dick. he had a life unlike the others and better things lined up.

  • I was there!!

  • It is great to see Mickey & Mike singing together, like John & Paul. Fantastic!

  • Wow! I was born exactly 10 years and 1 day after this performance... Damn it!

  • i saw the monkees this year without mike my favorite monkee i wish i could've seen this live

  • the drummer messed up at 1:32. luckily mickey dolenz turned around and told him where the beat was.

  • omg! i haven't seen this. i was there! mike was not supposed to be with them, but he showed up unannounced. what a treat!

  • Thanks so much for posting! I was also there that evening and remember that moment very well.

  • @glencram OMG how awesome for you!!! :) I was at the Convention in L.A. that weekend but my concert tickets were for the night before. There was a rumor that Mike was gonna show up, but unfortunately it wasn't the night of MY scheduled concert!! I bet that night was absolute magic!! Wish I was there. I've watched this video like 100 times and never get sick of it! Wasn't that tour of 1986 just the BEST?! :)

  • You can find anything on youtube! I love finding all of these Monkee videos. This one was a special treat. I love Mike Nesmith's work, in and out of the Monkees.

    His lyrics are pure poetry.

  • wow...how wonderful!!!

  • I was at that show! I was a senior in high school, and went to the show with a good friend of mine.. we'd both grown up on reruns of the show, and getting to see the original four play together was pretty magical.

  • Hands down, this is the way music is supose to be.

  • I was fortunate enough to see them in the summer of 1986 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ where Mike joined them as well during the show and it gave me chills I was just so happy to see them all together. I have been a Monkees fan since I was a little girl.

  • Wow, what rare footage! Mike looks like he's enjoying himself! Too bad he won't go on the 45th reunion tour! Thanks for posting this. Loved it!

  • Monkee Mayor!

  • I remember hearing about this 25yrs ago and being so jealous! Thanks to YouTube I can now witness it. What a wonderful treat! Yeah how did this video come about? Back then video cameras were the size of two four slice toasters. LOL

  • just got back from the Fox theater in Detroit & seen Davy, Mickey, & Peter do most of the monkees best,,,,,,sure wish Mike N. would have been there! I think he had some really great vocals & most of his songs had great guitar work!,,,buuuut,,,,I'm glad I got the opportunity to see them. Rock OOOoooon!!!!

  • Terrible recording.. LISTEN TO THE BAND WAS THEIR LAST HIT.

  • I was AT this concert tour... the night before the Greek, in Orange County at the Pacific Amphitheater--2nd ROW CENTER!

  • @davyo, You got the best video on YouTube. The four Monkees have reunited in 18 years.

  • just seeing those guys reunited puts a smile on my face. :)

  • I just want to know how this video happened, who got it?

  • I WAS THERE and it was heaven! I could not believe their energy for old guys over 40! TODAY they are in their late 60s and at this moment showing the same energy in south Florida! Monkees music will keep anyone young! I love them!

  • Now THAT is The Monkees : )

  • I was there that night when Mike walked out on stage. The Greek crowd went absolutely insane. My girl friend and I had such an amazing night. It was just one of those totally perfect, unforced evenings where everything clicks and time spirals out of sight and mind.

  • This video gave me goosebumps. I wish I could have been there. Sigh.

  • I wish this was available on DVD. They had a Monkees convention in Chicago about a decade ago, but i couldn't afford to go. I would love to see them reunite one more time. Or at the very least, have a DVD of them reuniting.

  • Shels: The only song that sticks out in my mind is the one I mentioned. Mike wasn't on stage long. Perhaps maybe half a dozen songs. And remember, at that time, pop songs were only two and a half minutes long! As I recall, it was that same week that the Monkees were presented with their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

  • I know it was corny, but I used to love watching The Monkees TV show,.

  • @Chuckv57 It's not corny at all. I just recently pulled out all my VHS of all their episodes and watched them all again. They STILL make me laugh!

  • I used to listen to the Monkees when I got home from school. I enjoyed them. The best band also. The music is very understandable. They need to tour again how they are now. I miss them. Char

  • i was born 1963 but i can rember listen you guys on our old black and white watch your show all the time so proud to grow up then and now so glad your still doing what you love to do you monkeys are the greatest loved all your show and music

  • They need some gangster rap instead of that &^&$%

  • SShel: Yep, I was there. I'm one of the people screaming my lungs out. It was pure magic and one of the greatest nights of my life. Re-living those days of my youth was indescribable. The most magical part for me was when all four guys sat on stools and sang acoustic versions of songs like "When Love Comes Knockin' at Your Door". Just them together. Such a precious memory.

  • @BOBMULK you lieing son of a bitch. shut the hell up. i would say more but i would get bleeped out. ass hole

  • @imthefrogman

Not sure who you are or why you seem to think you know whether or not I was at this concert. I think it might be important for you to pop the zits on your face and get a life. It's not my fault that you're worthless.

  • @BOBMULK How cool!! I'm so jealous! :) I never knew they sang more than what this video is showing (with Mike). How many songs did they sing with Mike there?

  • Davey, Peter, Mike and Micky... ah, the way it should be.

  • I wish they had been allowed to continue. If it were not for this group, I would never have taken an interest in music. To Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, Davey Jones, and Micky Dolenz, I thank you very much for the interest in music that you gave me. The best part of all, was you all made it look fun! THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

  • I was at this concert!!!! So much fun1

  • Lived in LA at the time and opted to go to their show in Long Beach rather than the Greek because the seats were SLIGHTLY better. When I heard Mike showed up at the Greek I wanted to throw up. *sniff*

  • if you love this performance, check out my version uploaded from the master! No glitches at all and in stereo!

  • Hey Hey how about the Monkees re-uniting for one last tour? PLEASE!

  • I want one more tour by the four guys

  • Comment removed

  • get behind the drums mickey!

  • I remember being shocked when I saw clips of this. All the press I read at the time was that he was mostly negative about the Monkees or simply had no interest in it anymore. I have managed to see them 3 times.

  • I just saw Davy Jones at the Meyer Theater in Green Bay. It was a great show. He's really funny and still sounds so good. Really took me back. He was my first crush.

  • Legendary....Great chemistry amongst these guys..Monkees=Happy

  • Nice performance .. its all there .. Listen to the Band! What is Peter Tork doing on stage. Can hardly see him.

  • Nice performance .. its all there .. Listen to the Band!

  • Monkee Mayor!

  • ya know...i went to most of the PA shows back then but Mike was not at any of them. plus I didn't own a video camera i actually have all my concerts on audio cassette

  • ya know...i went to most of the PA shows back then but Mike was not at any of them. plus I didn't own a video camera

  • Ya know it is a fact that if the beatles never got together, the Monkees would have been the number 1 band at that time. Look at the top 40 back then and the Monkees were always number two.

  • @jobywon11370 loves me some monkees...but the fact is they were pre-fab based on the success of the Beatles. Theyd be the first to acknowledge that if there were no Beatles, there'd be no Monkees- but yeah- if the Beatles were on vacation for the whole of 1966 the Monkees would have comfortably filled the void : )

  • Mike didn't want anything to do with the band in the later years since he actually thought he was an "artist". But this is pretty cool.

  • Mickey looks SOOOOOO happy to see Mike. I always thought they were like brothers and Mike was "BIG" brother....if they're not so close they sure put on really good on the show. Brothers & sisters fight all the time but family is family. I never thought they didn't like each other. Why do people keep sayin Davy is mad?

  • God I'm SO GLAD I was there for this. When Mike came out and they all hugged, I lost it, cried hysterically I think during the whole song. Ha ha I thought they all looked so old then, and now I'm older than they were then which is pretty scary!

  • I know what you mean. I saw the three on their reunion tour. if only all four would tour. That I'd like to see!

  • you can listen to a recording from 1968 and listen to them live and they sound the same! That's what music should be about!!!!

  • The monkees are one of few of those great sixties bands with all members currently living. PLEASE PUT OUT AN ALBUM! MANY WILL BUY!

  • @Ari721 The Monkees put out a new album in 1996. Its called JUSTUS. The title has a double meaning. "Just us" meaning that only the 4 Monkees worked on that album. They wrote the songs, played all the instruments, and did all the audio and technical things, and even produced the album themselves. Secondly, "Justus" meaning justus for all the years of struggling with producers of the tv show and record company when they wanted to do their own material. They really were talented.

  • @4fergr8ful Thank you, Captain Obvious. We never would have figured that out with your wondrous, psychic insight.

    Eat a turd.

  • @castletriglav Why? Are they good? You must know. Jerk.

  • Eigentlich nur unmusikalisches Geschrei. Mit diesem Auftritt haben sich die Monkees wahrlich keinen Gefallen getan.

  • I grew up with this music. My dad loved the Monkees, and now that he's gone atleast I have this great music to enjoy and think of my father, may God rest his soul.

  • Broadcast John: You were deaf from the screaming, at Patti Smith I was deaf for 2 days from the music. But I think the screaming at the Beatles show probably outranked the screaming at the Greek Theater that night. I would never dispute that the noise at one of those early Beatle's shows was the loudest sound ever created by a set number of people. Lucky you for experiencing that (I think). Recently saw Patti Smith again, only 11,669 days after I saw the first show. Maybe that's a record too.

  • I was lucky enough to be there that night, 5th row center. I have been going to concerts for almost 40 years, it is still one of my fondest memories. I was a fan of the show as a kid and a fan of the music ever since. Discussions about their musical talents rage on endlessly, but I can honestly say I have NEVER heard a louder crowd response than the moment when Mike walked on stage that night. I have been to louder concerts (Patti Smith), but never heard an audience scream like that. Thanks!!

  • They started as a TV gig, but, ended as a good, legitimate band!

  • Ahahaha! Davy, "I taught him that y'know?"

  • I was there and it was a night like no other!!!

  • WHERE'S MIKE! and yes i will shout, false advertising

  • I bleedin' hate it when band members are introduced and they each play a "funky solo"...yuk!

  • I think you'll find that the Nez was definitely Playing in this Band!

  • I laughed when the "band" was introduced ... it didn't contain any Monkees :/

  • @Kerkopes look more closely!

  • @siboobooboo what?

Listen more closely - the band was introduced as follows:

    drummer = Eddie Zine

    bass = Mark Clark

    guitar = Dustin Handy

    piano = Larry Nelson

horn players = Kevin, John, Jim, Lon

Aside from singing, the Monkees were just props :)

  • @Kerkopes they are all there. why are you even watcing this? x

  • @Kerkope that's theier backing band

  • Yeah. And I'm their choreographer.

  • liked seeing them together again cool

  • @cjdMobile66 look at the original members!! right here,

    blimey

  • awesome!!!!!!

  • As bad as the quality is on this video, it still makes me smile all over to see it. The guys are just so much more than the sum of their parts when they are together. It's just a magic that can't be denied.

  • Michael Jackson vs. The Monkees? This is one of the lamest arguments I've ever seen on YouTube. I love both.

Anyhow, it's amazing that they had the foresight to videotape this concert. And now I know the "correct" way to play "Pleasant Valley Sunday." There are basically two ways to finger it, but Chip Douglas once said that people who cover it always get it wrong. I'm assuming the way Nez plays it here is the right one. :-)

  • Listen to the crowd! I wish there was a live album of this show.

  • @blazak - there are two audio recordings of this show, one a bootleg Lp which is really good quality and the other an audience recording which is fairly good quality.

  • @davyo Know where you can find a copy? Would love to have it.

  • @davyo I have the audience recording on LP. Kinda sucky quality though.

  • @davyo Yeah! I have a bootleg of this put out by Birdbrain Records. Sounds just like this- this must've been the master for it.

  • @davyo there is i have it.

  • @davyo there is i have it. i was in love with that guy John in the horn section and i screamed his name in hersey pa and micky got so mad at me for interupting the show back then. I caught it all on cassette which i snuck in my huge bag.

  • @davyo Hook me up if you can. I saw that tour in Dallas. Davy writes about that particular show in his book. A great night at the old ball park in Arlington. Best feeling concert I've ever been to.

  • You and me Both Blazak..You and me Both...Do you or anybody know where this was filmed at?

  • @BreeHimmel0067 This concert was at the Greek Theatre in L.A. on September 7, 1986.

  • don't know about this p_ssing contest but their is enuff love for both Michael J and The Monkees I am sure they both respected one another ...I have seen them from all parts of the world Turkei to Tulsa both The Monkees and Michael J & The Jackson 5! Cheers

  • Dolenz & the lads have more talent in their left testicles than wacko jacko had in his whole body

  • Someone tell me what Michael Jackson has to do with the Monkees? And as for you whiners who hate them, why are you even posting? Do you think we care?

I was fortunate enough to be in the audience of this concert at the Greek Theatre in 1986 and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

  • @BOBMULK You were VERY fortunate! I wish I could have been there, too!!

  • @BOBMULK You were in the audience??!! WOW! I was at the convention that year! I went to the concert two days before. I knew that Mike was going to be at THAT show and was so bummed that my tickets were not for that night!! Did YOU know that Mike was going to be there? Were you at the Monkees Convention by chance? Or just the concert? Anyway, weren't those just the days? :)

  • @BOBMULK i don't know he owned one though

  • Thanks for posting this video. I doubt we will ever be lucky enough to see all 4 of them perform together again - but we can dream! We all have different tastes & not all appreciate the Monkees, but I for one will always love them. This brings back great childhood memories for me. Thanks!

  • Neswash power!

  • One of the most fun riffs to play.

  • Now we know why they were not allowed to play on the first albums. But they are great anyway.

  • saw the monkees in birmingham 1997..brilliant

  • I know it's hard for band members to get along, but I wish they'd tour ONE MORE TIME.

  • @MishuTaste they do tour sometimes two at a time or by themselves. Not Mike though. Micky was just in Pa and Peter was in Nj. Davy is always around.

  • @MishuTaste - It was announced a few days ago that the monkees are planning a reunion tour for 2011!! -- hey hey I'm a believer :)

  • @MishuTaste There's a rumor going around that they have one in the works for this year. But as i said, it's just a rumor.

  • @MishuTaste your wish came true :)

  • Saw Peter with his blues band on Sept 12. He was AWESOME! Loved it!

  • Yes.

  • I recall back in the day when a huge firestorm of controversy swirled about when a question of whether or not the (wonderful) Monkees played their own instruments.

But now look at what we've got going on. A sap known for wearing a white glove and having a girlyman's demeanor, along with a crap voice, was laid to rest a couple of weeks ago and they're still making a big deal out of him, even calling him a genius! Lol!!

So it begs the question: Have the musical standards fallen off a cliff?!

  • Michael Jackson had more talent as an individual than The Monkees had collectively (and I'm a big fan of The Monkees and their music!) Open up your ears, eyes, and especially your mind, look at MJ's videos, live performances (there are many on YouTube or the MTV site) and listen to his music WITHOUT prejudice. Michael WAS a genius in the music/entertainment industry! After all, it's tough to argue with the hundreds of millions of fans that bought his records and attended his concerts.

  • I don't care if everyone on the planet bought everyone of the crummy albums the flake ever produced, it's ALL GARBAGE.

  • Then if u think it's all garbage, why don't u stop watching it and shut up. There's some of us that DO like the Monkees.

  • Dude, read my comments again and see where I say the Monkees are "wonderful" but that Michael Jackson was a joke.

    Gezzzzzz.

  • To guyNbluejeans -see below.

  • Actually Mike and Peter were musicians before the band. But yes, they were not allowed to play on the first albums.

It was Mike and Peter that were most upset with the rumors that they couldn't play since they had been playing long before.

  • this is awesome thnx for posting

  • they should make a new cd togeter for the 2009-2010 !

  • I concur!

  • You think they aged then? Now they are 23 years older than that.

  • lordy yes,, arent we all a bit aged, lol

  • This is footage shot for ET (Entertainment Tonight) in 1986. ET featured the Prefabs fairly regularly for a couple of years, and they used about 2 min for a feature early on, and the encore was seen over the credits at the end of the show.

  • This was my first concert ever! 14 years old. I had nosebleed seats at the Greek, but this was incredible. Ah, memories.

  • aw the group hug at the beginning was the CUTEST thing ♥

I love seeing them all back together as a group :D

  • Okay, I can give them respect, now (1986) that they're are actually playing their instruments.

  • I was present at one of the Monkees concerts back then but not this one...sure wish that I was, though. The opening acts were not bad either...I think Herman's Hermits was one of them. Can't remember the rest.

  • I saw them in 1986 at the Garden State Arts Center in NJ. That show was just short of bedlam, screaming girls &* eveything. Saw them again in 87 & 89.

  • Was lucky enough to see them in concert in 1986-LOVE them!!!!!!!!!!! Thankyou to YouTube for letting me have my Monkees fix

  • wow!

  • 1986... that was the year I was born... I guess it's too much to hope that they'd do one last show eh? I love those guys.

  • Very cool! I saw them a bunch of times when they started touring again in '86, but I never got to see any shows with Mike. :-(

  • I love this. I saw Mickey Dolenz last night @ Hollywood Casino in Grantville,PA and had to watch it on the TV;s couldn't even get close to the concert area

  • I am surprised Peter knows the song because I was told he left the group before this song was released

  • Call me a fool, but as a kid I really liked them better than the Beatles and the Stones

  • I love the Monkee's but it's a shame that there was a period where Mike didn't join the rest of the members.

  • I went to see all four in Cardiff UK.

I heard they could not play live, they couldn't sing etc... Totally wrong, They were brilliant, one of my favourite ever concerts :)

  • they were not allowed to play on any of their recordings, but they taught themselves and played live when they toured. Mike was very talented and wanted artist freedom. this is really great footage..

  • they were no allowed to play on their first two albums after that they fought for their right to play their own instruments

  • How that crowd roared when Mike picked up the guitar. Makes cold shivers go down my back. Ah, these boys were so magical together.

  • I saw this tour , in '86. It was fun , they sounded good. The clothes they wore were'nt even tasteless compared to much of what was on MTV at the time...And ,hey , it WAS 1986. I saw them again about 7 years ago , and it was a vast improvement in every way. They sang better , much better backing band , Mickey played drums and Peter played Blues guitar A LOT, the song selection was much better , B-sides , lesser known LP cuts , 5 songs from "Head"!!!

  • The best part is "Pleasant Valley Sunday" starting at 4:10 of the video, with Mike on guitar and a brass-filled, almost theatrical, version of the song. The reunion tour seemed very entrenched in the 80s - the costumes, haircuts (i.e. Davy Jones, LOL) and production, etc. , rather than a look back at their 60's era. But it was good to see them all back together. They were a source of really good, and sometimes great, music.

  • This is fun. I remember when they came back, it was a HUGE tour that year and right thru the end of the decade. As far's it being 'Too 80's'--ummm gimme a break, it's from '86, what did you expect? Mid Sixties mod beatle wigs or '94 era plaid and ripped jeans or '77 disco? Seriously.

  • If they could go on tour together one last time, I would pay good money to see them!

  • Actually Peter is only one wh ohas mentioned a monkees reui0on early this year in an intrview. and thats only cause he isnt doing much right now. last time davy was asked about he said he didnt want to and didnt l iek the other guys. yet peter poped up and played a song with him at his concert the next day. peter also played song with micky at one his cxoncerts last summer. i don't forsee them reuniting cause they don 't get along off stage. they are four totaly divergent personalities.

  • I don't think the crowd even knew that was Nesmith until about :16...LOL. And then it was a guess...until he picked up the guitar...LOL
