It wasn't only in Netherlands in those years (the 70's), It was in every western country almost: France, UK, Italy, Germany, Israel, USA, Spain in the later 70's... it was the era of the progressive rock everywhere, and I guess we all really miss it.
Today progressive is still played, but it's far from being popular as it was then (they play here on the BBC if I'm not wrong!) and it's rather underground... You have to search a lot to find good music!
Love Progressive music. This is so beyond awesome. Check out Animals As Leaders if you like Progressive music. It is much more metal, but Animals As Leaders has explosive talent.
Anyone know where I can find the footage of the version of Hocus Pocus they played right after this performance? It recently got removed from Youtube so if anyone knows another site or place to download it from that would be great because I really like his solo on that performance.
@earthless1990 pOOR aLMAN BROTHERS MAN....THEY WOULD BE TOTTALY LOST IN THIS JAM...fOCUS IS A WHOLE DIMENSION AHEAD ALMAN BROTHERS ... TECHNICALLY ......DOESNT MEAN BETTER
This Dec., 1972 video is from the UK television show, "The Old Grey Whistle Test," as are similar videos on Youtube featuring Focus playing "Hocus Pocus," "Sylvia," and "Anonymous II" (with the walls of speakers behind the band). This particular song is an excerpt of "Eruption" which is:
Pupillae
Tommy
Pupillae
The Bridge
The video cuts out just before the band went into "Hocus Pocus" (then "Sylvia," and a reprise of "Hocus Pocus").
UHHHHH , Guys, I didn't know about this band !!...curiosely the Pierre van der Linden drum solo pattern on the snare is EQUAL to Neil Peart "The Rithm Method"....came some years later I presume , anyway a gret inspirational band :
@earthless1990 Wow, I've never had a comment receive "too many negative votes"...I figured I should go back and watch it again to see why there were so many pissed off people, but I still feel the same...let me just say, that what made me feel so disappointed was the fact that I consider the song "Eruption" one of the most beautiful compositions and performances, ever...I bought the album when it came out after hearing "Hocus Pocus" on the radio, and I eventually loved "Eruption", but, cont....
@earthless1990 ...it took a few listens...I'm not sure what each section is called, but the section at the beginning of this clip is so much better on the studio version...Jaan Ackerman builds it up, then absolutely fucking WAILS, and the tone of his guitar is so gorgeous, but he only plays a little of it here, just the quiet part part, he never lets loose, then the band at exactly the 3 min. mark goes into an extended jazz improvisation for over 4 mins...maybe they were stoned, I don't know...
@earthless1990 By the way, I did buy a DVD w/ Old Grey Whistle Test footage, which wasn't bad...I'll buy any video footage of "Moving Waves" I can find, especially if it has "Eruption" on it...just thought I'd mention, the very last section on which the flute carries the melody, is about the most perfect, beautiful pieces I've ever heard...I wanted to learn to play the flute just so I could do it...and does anybody else think the drums at the end are supposed to imitate fireworks?
Focus are one of those rear thing. A band that is still imporiant long after they were famous. Something that modern bands will never be like. Focus are brilliant and this video form the 1970's proves this. First class stuff.
The studio version of Tommy, is just like some massive Roman gods head coming out of the sea or something, I love the build up, if only people had patience for this intelligent music.
I miss the heavier sound he uses on the album version, the jazzy sound he gets here makes the solo section less aggressive as the one i know and love, but it is always nice to see Akkerman Improvise. I love Thijs van Leers added funky flute section, it adds character.
I wish Akkerman used this tone on the recording.

I really like Dutch rock through this era. You get a talented 'we're just going to go for it' attitude, then out comes somthing amazing like this.

Saw them live - twice - in Glasgow, millions of years ago. Every one of these guys was a top-class musician back then.
Saw Jan Ak. in Glasgow about ten years ago - he looked older but his talent hadn't aged a bit, not a bit. I was moved by the music and the nostalgia.
God, what has happened to 'music' today?
