  • EJ rules!!

  • Cool to see Eric playin a 335. Right on.

  • Lead guitar doesn't get any better than this. This guy is often playing rhythm and lead at the same time.

  • 345

  • The Master at work

  • Bonamassa just sounds like johnson these days

  • EJ Playing ACE OF SPADES.... :) \m/

  • What kind of red Strat is that . It resembles a Gibson guitar.

  • @Johngtr13 It resembles a Gibsion because it is a Gibson ^ ^

  • @BlachZackmon Why the hell would you put this comment on here. Any retard knows the difference between a 335 and a strat. The guy was making a joke, obviously because EJ is known for playing strats.

  • @Johngtr13 you must be either an ignorant or an idiot..

  • @MrYeswecan14 : It's a joke buddy lighten up. Don't show your stupidity.

  • @Johngtr13 you blonde? cz only blonde dumbfucks make suck stupid comments

  • The tone... oh the tone...*drools*

  • this guy still knows what the pure sound of music is!! i can feel the rythm all over my body :D

  • Sounds exactly like early clapton stuff

  • Comment removed

  • Why doesn't this have more views? It's like one of the best ES335 tones ever, and it's making me want an ES335 even more.

  • I'm with ya 100%....well said!

  • Reminds me of Clapton's tone with Cream. Nothing like PAFs (PAT#s) thru a Plexi and Pre-Rolas!

  • 0:51 - soo dirty.

  • @MarshallGunner fuck yeah, ffff, esa parte además .. fuuu, increible

  • hes soloing sounds like joe bonamassa

  • No, joe bonamassa's soloing sounds like EJ's. He's been around alot longer than JB. I'm older than JB. but I agree, they sound alike in many regards. I just saw bonamassa for the first time two weeks ago at the vic in chicago, and he does a riff that is identical to EJ, that I noticed. But I still think EJ is more talented and comes up with songs that are memorable. Everything I've heard from JB is forgettalbe, not to sound too much like Simon. Srry.!!

  • Eric johson unique talent..

  • Comment removed

  • No Joe Bonamassa Sounds like THIS, and recently got VERY influenced by Eric Johnson, When I first Heard Joe he Sounded Like SRV

  • WHY can't anyone just appreciate the fact that Clapton AND Johnson are both incredible guitarists that have done things with guitars that the world had not seen before? WHY must we have to compare and say who's better and worse? WHY can't we just appreciate the MUSIC?

  • YEAH!!!

  • @jjdean94 I agree with you totally! we just got to appreciate the music.

  • hey hey we are all forgetting john mayer

  • Great guitar sound, like Clapton with Cream tone.

  • Both EJ and EC play for the song. EJ can realllly burn it. Both play the spaces--both know when NOT to play. That's what makes a good musician.

  • I wonder how much Eric's strat will be worth in 100 years...

  • fourteen and half bigillion dollars

  • for some reason and i dont know why he reminds me of mcfly from back to the future

  • @stroutsy LOL

  • The is Boogie King

  • Does Anyone know the name of this song? If you know please leave a comment with it.:P

  • What's the name song??

  • how does he get that signature sound with every guitar he plays??

  • Pedals.

  • fingers

  • That guitar sings!

  • this is why hes awesome, Strat AND Gibson

  • HE's got sweet tone (Y)

  • This is one of my favourite songs by EJ. I just love the "question and answer" style of this song!

  • He certainly loves Clapton.

  • that's something! :D

  • Yeah!Hes got that Clapton touch! This sounded a little like Spirit in the sky near the beginning

  • the only thig johson and clapton have in common is the name eric. EJ is miles in fact light years ahead of old slowhand clapton, not that ive never listened to EC but hes soo overrated. anyway this is a great piece by EJ

  • this entire song is inspired by EC's old band Cream so dont ever disrepect pioneers of this sort of music and be an ignorant individual

  • ok chief -keep you hair on. its just my opinion. but the fact remains EC IS highly overrated (in fact when he first heard hendrix, clapton said he had nothing compared to him- ie JIMI) and sadly EJ is underrated but IMO is more versatile/melodic/talented than slowhand and frankly much more intersting to listen to

  • oh and sir i am a professional blues harpist and a guitarist and a music researcher so i have an idea of wat im talking about ........if u like friend i can share music with u cause my dad collects stuff

  • ok, fine i dont think we actually disagree that much i love music (i play the violin and guitar) i have and do listen to EC but still think hes overrated if you want to share music that would be great. i agree re page/peter green etc (btw - have u heard any gary moore- i really like him alos)i also listen to vai/satrianin/carlos santana and others and if you want to hear real musical brilliance then listen to maxim vengerof (violinist)

  • Hi Mate....Strongly disagree about Clapton being overrated. If this man isn't one of the best exponents of blues in the whole world, then I know nothing about the guitar.

Most of the younger players that I teach have your opinion. However after a few years of playing , they change their opinion. Eric is not the best technical player in the world & couldn't hope to match Paul Gilbert & co. in the speed stakes. What Eric possesses is consumate good taste & the ability to leave some space.

  • fair enough. i agree totally that speed technicality etc do NOT necessarily make a good musician, in fact often the opposite.i have many of cream/claptons old albums and listened to them freq in the past but i still feel compared to the likes of EJ or al dimeola etc he is given far too much recognition and i love the blues ranging from buddy guy to muddy waters to albert king albert collins etc. i also love gary moore so my spectrum is not limited to shreders/speed merchants in fact far from it

  • I respect your opinion. You obviously have excellent taste. I think we can agree to disagree on Clapton being overrated.

  • im glad to see ppl can have a rational discussion on you tube, some ppl just like ranting and raving or simply profaning. good luck w teaching youngsters real music

  • I was talking about E.C. as a technical player....which he is not. You , like many players , feel that EC is overrated. Many of my muso mates think the same as you.

It's in the eye of the beholder. I personally love the Clapton approach to the blues. He is more feel than technique.

As far as saying that all he can do is wiggle a string.......from a guitarist of 20+ experience , I would have expected a more intelligent appraisal. We agree to disagree. Thanks for your comment.

  • Eric clapton is an astounding guitarist. He may not be technically perfect, but when he messes up, you really dont notice because the feel and timing are so spot on. Id also say that he is the king of improvised soloing.

  • What a total jerk off. Do you have perfect intonation like Eric? Have you been a side man, bandleader, vocalist and songwriter? Do you have over 20 albums out? If not your speaking out of your but. Most professional guitarists not wanna bes have a lot of respect for Eric. What is your discography? How many tickets can you sell?

  • I think EJ can play faster than you may be aware. But, like you said, he plays with taste and does not (at least hardly ever) deem(s) it necessary to play super fast.

  • also BTW if you listen at the end he says "dedicated to john lee hooker" did you think clapton was the originator of blues or something, dont be "an ignorant individual" there are soo many before him who really can be called pioneers eg bb/albert king buddy guy, albert collins, JLH, chuck berry etc.......

  • i agree with u ,but the collective sound of eric johnson in this song with his trio sounds like EC's old trio(cream)so Eric johnson being legend yes , but EC,Page,Peter Green ,were guitar gods of there era ......so please compare musicians in there own era as i knw how much guitaring standards change in every 5 yrs cause i play guitar ....u might see logic in wat im saying

PS..give an old timer his due and give him a listen

    cheers..

  • and SVR

  • wtf dude???

srv is great, i love his tone, guitar playing, style and voice...he's great, rip of?? he's no rip of dude..

  • well i think we'll just have to agree to disagree

  • Every listener is different as is every musician. Player styles and listener tastes vary. Both of the players mentioned, (EC and EJ), have evolved to the point where they can say what want with their instrument. If you don't like the music of someone who masters the art of conveying their ideas through playing, then they're probably not even talking to you. Being able to speak to more people, for whatever reason, doesn't make EC any better or worse. He did lay the groundwork for EJ, though.

  • EJ IS THE MAN

  • Now I've got to learn THAT.

    Bill

  • Tis awsome! I like it! And...The house of Blues is a place for players of all kinds...I went there and they didn't just play music of blues...:/ Aler.Rock and others

  • dude you are pathetic, eric johnson puts his soul into his music.

  • it sounds better when he plays with the strat but still great

  • Hard to believe he is in his 50's... he doesn't seem to age! I have been listening to him my whole life, and he looks exactly the same!

  • I agree - crazy isn't it ! You could easily mistake him for being like 30 or something !

  • He probably eats well and doesn't drink or smoke. Enormous talent compared to the 99.9% of guitarist out there.

  • It's all in the genes....

  • How does this fit into rapp or heavy metal. ;)

Eric is the greatist Guitar placer ever!

  • I love it when eric plays his 335. I prefare it to the strat.

    BEEF!!!!

  • What an absolute KILLER tone from the big Gibson! Personally I think he's lost a bit of strat tone in recent years, but this is amazing !

  • Woah,simply amazing!

  • who says that he must do something spectacular?

it's blues , not heavy metal or funk

Eric johnson , the best guitar player in the world. He understand the music like no other

  • gibson 335 custom love the tone out of that guitar

  • The bassist doesnt do anything spectacular. I dont understand why people think bassists do so much. If the bassist was exceptional they wouldnt go on stage as Eric Johnson.

  • Yeah right! I also prefer playing with a expectional and spectacular bassist rather than with one with good time and taste...

  • The bassist is doing pretty well, its just that virtuoso guitarists like EJ can't help but steal the spotlight from the rest of the band

  • To a point, I agree but have you ever heard of Billy Sheehan?

  • or Victor Wooten?

  • Look at the bassist in Helloween then, he´s doing somthing!

  • well yeah, i agree to a certain point like, jaco pastorius , stanley clarke and mark egan, sheehan etc. , however in a rock format they 're kinda limited coz its always the guitarist who gets th limelight.. it depends on the setting and the bassist of a particular band.

  • bass players are part of the rythm section, they dont need to always shine out

  • that's it all about, famous guitarists are moslty famous about their solo's, and a electric guitar works way better for that thn a bass guitar ;) -says a bassist/electrist-

  • Eric Johnson plays with him and anything that is good for Eric Johnson should be great for us. Besides without bass players guitarists would sound lot more empty.

  • ain't heard any ultratechnical, and it got me more than yngwie's failing attempts at playing blues. he's got it - he makes one note say more than several played by most of guitarists. this is gift, the touch of God. this shows the difference between a guitarist and a musician.

  • no one's mentioned that he has an incredible bassist.

  • Awesome! Such articulation in his playing

  • Wish Gibson would produce an Eric Johnson model.. Whilst what he does with a strat is beyond reproach, he really makes these big Gibsons sing !

  • For all you children who insist that this or that guitarist is "better":

PUt yourself in the shoes of the player - should the message given by the music be "look at me, I'm BETTER than anyone"?

Screw that - just close your eyes and listen to the music.

  • Well put dude... EJ's all abt the music... no points to prove...

  • absolutely!

  • I'm not feelin this, however, that doesen't take away from his tallent and abilitys i just like eric's strat sound better. this sounds like a morph of BB King, ZZ Top and Muddy Waters. good stuff but not my thing

  • Personally, I'm a big fan Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani ... they all have their own style... Eric Johnson in this video really is great..i have nothing more to say, except that he is a genious !! oh yeah, and all you guys out there who comment on this badly just because of your taste really don;t know what you;re talknig about!! If you can do what this guy does with the guitar, then i salute you ...if you don't , shut the fuck up, ok ?

  • totally agree...hes just gifted beyond human....

  • He is feeling it , he plays straight and not stoned like alot of guys do , this is why he is so great .

  • Great soul man and whats better he plays it with a gibson to add that unmistakable vintage blues sound. Great work.

  • fenders are way better for that vintage blues tone

  • Nah ! ! ! !

  • thats why almost all the great blues players play Gibson...

    Duh!

  • no they dont most play fenders fool. EJ even normally uses a fender, robert cray buddy guy, SRV eric clapton jimmie vaughan just to name a few

  • Contrary to popular belief, when EJ recorded the intro to "Cliffs Of Dover", which is probably his most known piece, he used a 335, not a strat.

Tho a strat is what he is known for, his signature lead tone sounds more like a humbucker than a typical strat. He does this by wiring a tone control to the back pickup and rolling off a lot of the high end, like you can do with a Gibson. The guys I've heard come closest to getting his tone were usually playing a 335 while doing it.

  • Ahh...Clapton became famous using Gibsons, a Les Paul, then an SG, then a Firebird, then a 335, which Crossroad was recorded on...ahh then Jimmy Page...Les Pauls, oh yeah, there;s BB King-Gibson, Elvin Bishop-345, Robben Ford, Warren Haynes, Greg Allman, want me to keep going...you see, they play what they want unless they get endorsements from Fender for packing a strat around...Fenders and Gibsons are just great

  • fenders are better for me more versatile and comfortable to play

  • they are more comfortable, but i wouldnt say more versatile at all, most strats only have single coil pickups, which arent that versatile at all.

  • they are for tone like as in when your playing blues or funk there is no better tone adjustments your right though humbucking pick ups are great for hard rock

  • very true, very true, if i had more money :(

i would buy a strat, strats are definitely amazing for blues and stuff like you said. I play lots of styles though, blues, classic rock, so id probly get a guitar with humbuckers, such as a les paul.

altho even with humbuckers, you can play blues, just work the tone knobs

  • yea you can play blues on a les paul but to me it doesn't sound as good as the bridge pick-up on a strat so crisp that special fender clank love it i have a standard strat a while now and still finding new ways of working my tone

  • yea you can play blues on a les paul but to me it doesn't sound as good as the bridge pick-up on a strat so crisp that special fender clank love it i have a standard strat a while now and still finding new ways of working my tone

  • yeah, i agree that strats are defineitly one of the best blues guitars, if i played blues more i would buy a strat, but since i play lots of different stuff, im gonna go with a les paul. I'll get a strat in a couple years when ive saved up after spending on a les paul :)

  • LOL.... The guitar one plays depends on the tone the player wants. Most player have a few. The deal with Gibson is most Gibson's have Humbucking pickups. Humbucking pickups give a guitar a very thick sound. Single coil pickups found on Fender guitars have a more round sound and punchy tone. Either one is no better than the other. No mater what guitar a player uses if they are good you can always tell them apart no mater what type of guitar because it's all in the hands.

  • awesome

  • Double comment, but who's his drummer in this vid?

  • the drummer's called Bill Maddox

  • He looks like he's not feeling his music like Vai does. You know, like the guitar playing steve, with funny faces and co).. He's got to be overly concentrated i suppose, since he sounds damn amazing in everything he does ^^

Long live EJ, he's been among the very best for some time now, and still is !

  • not feeling it? just cuz he doesn't make faces?

    Get a FUCKING life!

  • Seriously, you should be the one to get a fucking life. I wasn't rude or whatever, nor did I criticize EJ's playing. I was just giving my point of view, I don't see the need to insult me or whatever just cuz you disagree. So get a fucking life yourself.

Also, it's not about the faces he'd do or not, it's just about the fact that he doesn't show his feelings.

And haha you're 47, judging by your comment I'd have bet you were 14 or something. Ridiculous. Just die man.

  • Andrea Bocelli must not 'feel it' either because of his bored face . lol

  • when a guitarist is playing difficult peices of music they

can't jump around and make faces the music is so difficult

they have to concentrate totallly on it.

  • steve vai can jump around and make faces any time he wants.

  • unfortunately, you're right.. but let's say that Eric is just more introspective. Steve Vai is crazy hehe

  • @drchronos I wouldn´t answer that any other way.

  • @Jowind Yes but Steve Vai is backed by an entire band, including 1 or two more guitars and an insanely awesome bass player. All Eric has most of the time is him a bass and drums... When you're the only one supporting the guitar in instrumental music you can't be jumping around and being crazy and sloppy like Vai does. Vai is really sloppy most times. Eric is rarely anything but a step down from perfect.

  • @JeevesMorris1

    I agree !! Cheers, brother!

  • @JeevesMorris1 "Vai is really sloppy most times". Maybe we don't have the same definition of sloppy or maybe you have nerver seen a vai performance....

  • @MrHarioharima I have nothing against him. He knows his stuff but I feel that he cares more about... Showing off than he dose about his technique. Live I find him to be sloppy.

And yes actually, I have gotten to see him live.

  • @JeevesMorris1 Not really agree i just think that they have a diffrent way to express their music in live. They don't feel music the same way. It's great to talk with somebody who don't think his answer is the only correct answer +1 for you dude

    Bye

  • I agree with Louie6942. It's waaaay to subjective to say who the best guitarist is. EJ has been given high praise by the likes of Clapton, Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughn and many more. IMHO, EJ stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the all time greats like Hendrix and Clapton.

  • Anybody know the name of this song?

  • Boogie King

  • That was a great jam.Thanks.................

  • Fans of BOTH Eric Johnson and Jimi hendrix might want to check out the YouTube clip of Eric Johnson on Austin City Limits playing "Are You Experienced". His vocal rendition his his own but the guitar playing is amazingly close to the Hendrix studio version. He even does the backwards guitar parts justice.:-)

Probably one of the better Hendrix YouTube Clips I've seen is him Playing "Wind Cries Mary" in Stockhom Sweden in 1967.

  • all you people getting on with this bullshit of "so and so is better than so and so" really need to get lives. IT'S TOO SUBJECTIVE. just because you like some does not mean they are the best. it is IMPOSSIBLE to pick a "best" guitarist in the world. grow up and stop bashing some and saying they suck because they don't happen to fit your taste in music.

  • to GARCIA22685 you obviously havent heard much of ej's music you complete fool.

eric is a very talented musician and if you havent realised that i dont know why you are getting his guitar

  • what do you know?...

  • Not a real Musician? Then if he's not who is?

  • Like you have anything impressive?

  • i can play this

  • My favourte Guitarist, with my favourte Guitar playing one of my favourte songs? Pure bliss :D Thank you so much for uploading this.

  • if put in the position to cut heads im sure both eric and steve (and even jimi) would say why? id rather jam WITH him than AGAINST him...

  • you guys are all morons. hendrix didnt have the greatest technique, but noone, and i mean noone has that hard edge. not even srv. and you couldnt compare those 2.... or clapton and eric johnson. there extremely different. steve vai's playing style gets on my nerves a bit though. there all great.

  • stop fucking posting these

  • No one here seems to get it. Listen to CREAM and you'll understand what Eric is doing here. He may dedicate the song to someone else, but that playing, especially the end is a nod to CLAPTON. The tone, the phrasing, even his choice of guitar is all CREAM.

  • Cream were the shittest band ever in every way. I'd like to see Clapton try and hold hs own with EJ.

  • I'd like to see Hendrix try and hold his own with EJ.

  • Lol it wouldn't even be funny, Eric Johnson would murder him for technique. Or did you think that I was some delusional Hendrix worshipper?

I'd like to see Eric Johnson try and hold his own with Steve Vai :-)

  • I like Steve Vai, but Eric Johnson would demolish him, as far as I am concerned Vai is too caught up with the latest technology and the fastest shredding, so much so that he overlooks the very aspect of his playing.

  • Demolish him for what? Technique? No, definitely not. EJ is definitely a top ten guitarist, but I personally think that Vai's music is more enjoyable and challenging e.g. 'Fire Garden Suite', which EJ could never have written.

I'm not putting EJ down; I'm merely pointing out that, whilst EJ is more skilful than Hendrix, there are more skilful players than EJ.

  • Not to be rude, but I truly think that Eric Johnson is the best guitarist period. And it's not me being close minded... I like plenty of styles, and I have heard all of the shredders, and I find that Eric has somethin that none of them do I can't quite put my finger on it but it's there.

  • I can see your point of view, even if I don't concede it. EJ is the ultimate guitarist, with amazing technique, versality, compositional ability and improvisational ability. That said, I prefer Buckethead, Vai, SRV, Petrucci, and maybe Hendrix and Satriani.

  • i dont know, he sounds like every txt book style player with phenomal technique, the same. Only one player that comes from a different planet in my opinion, George Lynch

  • That's not a nice thing to say:( Their both unique

  • umm...people, this is NOT good tone. I dont see what the big deal is? I can get the same badly over distorted sound by plugging my 1960's Harmony guitar direct into a tape deck....big deal? It's a shame to make such a wonderful guitar sound like that....

  • your joking right? that tone is to die for! you have to have a good ear to appreciate EJ and his tone.

  • onmfg yes. EJ IS A TONE GOD!!!

  • oldguitarplayer: dude it's not the amp or guitar it's the finger magic soul from the player. Take another listen he wouldn't be here if that wasn't true. If in doubt take a listen to cliffs of dover or desert rose.

  • Overly distorted? HA! If you honestly think this is too much distortion than that just shows yourtonal quality.

  • Listen to 'Zap' or 'Cliffs of Dover' etc. That's his trademark tone.
