I don't think this was meant to be a comedy, just bad advice. Don't just replace your small words with big ones, learn to use the big ones properly. Trying to jam sophisticated words into your speech can make you look really stupid. The worst part of it is you most likely won't notice how dumb you sound to your peers.

Believe it or not, this is actually useful. If you use as much Latinate words as possible, it's easier to communicate with someone who is not good at English and speaks a Romance language.
