However, a maverick to shake things up has been shown to be beneficial from time to time. Shakespeare comes to mind. :)

I'd say he was both a maverick AND a pioneer. Making up words when needed, alterering, discarding or otherwise manipulating sentence structure and the grammar of English itself; it's almost as if he formed most of modern English by himself. I am exaggerating, of course, but English just would not be anywhere near the same without that man.
