  • Well after watching it ALL the way through I have to say... THANK GOD they didn't use this theme for TNG. This is so painfully forgettable and generic, the TNG theme is classy, iconic, and epic sounding; ya it may have been made for the original films first but sorry after all these years it has become the TNG theme and we wouldn't want it any other way.

  • Why the Hell does the German intro have a different song? :o

  • Not that it's bad, just not as good.

  • Glad they used the other one.

  • Crap.

  • JJ Abram's New Star Trek: The Next Generation!

  • I like the Captain Kirk theme from Star Trek The Motion Picture better (the one they lifted for TNG),

  • Wow makes me think of superman for some reason.

  • IMAGINE IF THEY USED THIS THEME FOR EVERY SINGLE EPISODE IN "STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION"!

  • @ttow1944

    what then?

  • lolno

  • Contrary to what others are saying, I definitely could see this being used. But only in a world where the amazing original theme didn't exist!

  • I heard this one time very long time ago. The theme is actually really good. The correct title for this is Picard's theme because he saved the day at the end of the episodes in first and second season.

  • TNG would not have made it if this song had been the theme. Because it almost didn't as it was. This song would have been the knife in the back.

  • @heymrk Why? Just because YOU don't like it?

  • Hmm, it's not too bad, but the actual one is so much better!

  • whoah are you serious, it sounds totally different! I like it! It´s like the Mirror Universe version of Star Trek! 8^E

  • If TNG ended up more militaristic, this theme would have been great. I remember this from a cassette tape I purchased a long time ago.

  • Brass for the win

  • Sounds like it would go with a superman movie.

  • @TheOneAndOnlyFink Disregard that, I just saw someone else posted that.

  • Thank goodness they didn't use this alternate theme.

It was a smart move to reuse the theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

If they had used this alternate theme, the show would have gotten the axe.

  • I remember owning the official soundtrack cassette tape that came with this alternate version. Loved it. Dont think I would have minded at all if they had used it.

  • not bad ....bit like superman theme

  • wow not really bad at all. lol but its not tng

  • sounds like the music from STO

  • I've had the soundtrack since forever and am so glad they didn't use this one. It was too over the top. It always reminded me of the Superman movie music

  • Look, is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO! It's the starship Enterprise!

  • All that remained of this in the series was the 'beebooboop' sound made by Picard's office doorbell.

  • it's as if the themes from Dallas and Superman came together. still, I think it works. Good Job

  • It is a bit too "superhero," but I like it for what it is. It was on the soundtrack cassette for "Encounter At Farpoint." I like the pieces of it they used sometimes as incidental music.

  • I love TNG score, it's awesome, so can't imagine the appeal of changing it for this...

  • its good music, but it served better in parts as leitmotif and background music in the early seasons.

  • Cheesy.

  • @Tyler003310ify

I'm afraid you're wrong. This beginning narration was used in Season 1 and 2, but the theme was not.

  • @Tyler003310ify

Original, as in original airing in 1987? I have all of these on DVD, and have seen them numerous times on TV, and have never heard this theme used. Maybe parts of it as background music rearranged...

  • @Tyler003310ify If you would point to where I can see these imaginary ORIGINAL versions, I'd be happy to concede your point.

  • @Tyler003310ify I watched every episode from 1987 to 1994 in their original run and they NEVER used this opening theme. They ALWAYS used Jerry Goldsmith's ST:TMP theme. This shot was used for the opening credits for seasons 1 and 2 but always with the Goldsmith theme.

  • I actually thought this would have served better as the opening theme for TNG back then. TNG began before Galaxy Quest was a movie. This them is bolder than some of the other orchestral themes used.

  • ..This reminds me of Spaceballs for some odd reason.

  • God why does this remind me of Superman, i hear this and see Clark Kent in a phone booth then come out as superman. Glad they only used it as a sub theme for the show.

  • This theme sounds better for Galaxy Quest. Were they really serious about using this? So glad they didn't after all.

  • This theme doesn't work all that good to TNG... it works better to Kirk and his Connie named... ENTERPRISE

  • galaxy quest the next generation

  • Too generic.

  • horrible

  • Cant help but think its a little like The Original Battlestar Galactica Theme, very bombastic.

  • cant help but think its a little like the original Battlestar Galactica Theme. Very bombastic.

  • I have the "Encounter at Farpoint" soundtrack and this is on it. They asked Dennis to make two versions, obviously the one reminiscent of the first movie's theme won out.

  • That sucked.

  • i can see why this didn't make it. the new tune just didn't go with the TOS related intro. it was wise to meld the TOS intro with the TMP soundtrack. because that works.

  • wow its a great theme but i still like the other one better

  • Next!

  • SO GAY music

  • @FerriBrodge

Its not gay, it has no sexuality.

  • I love this song...and, to me, the only Enterprise better in appearance in the Enterprise refit(Star Trek:TMP)

  • Sounds like Galaxy Quest or something

  • sounds better with the vuvuzela

  • Sounds like Spaceballs or something

  • I feel like I'm watching a bad B-movie with this horrible song.

  • Nice I like it!

  • it's cool

  • The enterprise d is ugly, it nacelles are way to short. The emterprise b and e are sickly awesome. Also, the enterprise from the new star trek is cool.

  • @TheDUDEDOOOD It looks too front heavy eh? lol I used to love the way it looked, but from some angles, the D really does suffer from an inadequate balance .

  • sounds like a superman theme

  • it's ok... but I got to say I prefer the 'regular' theme... Surround sound system - activated. Volume Levels set to Maximum. Engage ST-TNG... 'brace for impact'. Whoa!!!!!

  • @snaffuu i just wet my pants laughing to that.

  • Nice tune. You can also hear its themes in the TNG background music every now and then across the seasons.

  • Enterprise to the Rescue!!! lol

  • This evokes the idea of Horatio Hornblower. It's very mariner oriented. Similar to the seafaring/swashbuckling sound of James Horner's ST2 Wrath of Kahn theme.

  • Sounds like a Buck Rogers theme

  • Reminds me of "Galaxy Quest"...

  • Reminds me of "Galaxy Quest"...

  • This does sound kind of lame. Sounds like an 80's Saturday afternoon special. I'm glad they went with the theme from ST:TMP.

  • AMAZING theme tune. I adore Goldsmith's TMP theme, but this is also wonderful. The fact that they reused an old theme was disappointing, and, had they used this ("Picard's") theme, then most people wouldn't have been able to accept anything else. It's all about conditioning.

Great piece though. So ... bombastic and ... well, 80s!

  • Sounds like the theme to Spaceballs.

  • Yeah, I think I would have hung myself if this tune was used. Than again, maybe the composser should be the one I should hang. Something to consider. Still interesting though.

  • WTF

  • This theme is considered Captain Picard's theme...you hear it often in the first few seasons of TNG. The only reason it was not chosen as the official theme is because Paramount was afraid Trek fans would reject the show. They decided to re-use the theme from The Motion Picture instead, to connect it better with the Trek fans were familiar with.

  • Yeah, I've noticed that they played it a lot at the ends of episodes, after Picard saved the day. It works pretty well there I think!

  • its not bad...but I couldn't imagine ever humming a different tune to "da dadada dadada, dada da da daah daaah daaah dundadaa daaaaaa...

  • @Treemeadow I think we all feel that way because we grew up with the altered version of the Motion Picture theme... but if this had been the song, I think we'd all have been saying "I can't imagine myself humming the motion picture theme instead of this awesome and memorable track!"

  • Makes me want to punch myself right in the neck.

  • Glad they didnt use this!

  • Kinda sounds like Superman.

    Doesnt really fit.

  • No, just no!

  • sounds like that music should be on the galaxy quest soundtrack.

  • LOL YES

  • weird, a bit too much like dallas or Young Indiana Jones for my liking... tho still better than the enterprise theme imo

  • Ah! There are shades and echoes of that theme through the soundtrack of Encouter At Farpoint. As has been said, and may I say it again, it's just too superhuman, let's up, up, up and away! I'd have loved to have seen Gene Roddenberry's face as they played him that track though. : ))

  • This theme grows on you after a dozen viewings. ^^

    Still, it's a little repetitive O.o

  • not bad

  • From certain angles, you can see the blue light from the nacelles reflecting off the hull. That's another reason why I mmourned her demise in "Generations".

  • I guess I'm too used to the real TNG theme, but other than that... this is not bad at all. In my books it beats all other ST themes and is about equal with TNG. But TOS and ENT themes, omg what crap. DS9 and VGR are ok, but this has the classic feeling of a starship charging in with phasers blazing. :)

  • WTF? How brilliant is this vid? 5 stars!!

  • If there is ever going to be a REAL Star Trek series again, they should use this theme!

  • This would have worked, though it kind of reminds me of Galaxy Quest =/

  • for some reason, it makes me think Superman. or at least something "superhero-ish" along those lines. i wish the real theme was used in Generations.

  • Hehe, yeah, I agree.

Too much, well, as you say, "superhero-ish" over it. Somebody should make a superman video with this theme :P

  • Sounds like something leftover from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

  • I am sooooo glad they used the Goldsmith music.

  • TAKE THAT BACK!!! That theme sounds like a superhero theme. I could envision it being used for my new hero White Lightning.

  • Well done! If the true TNG theme weren't so burned into my head, I'd have little trouble thinking this to be possible!

  • This theme was used for Picard throughout the first and second season, and dropped in the third season when Berman had more of a direct hand in the music.

The GEN theme has some similarities with this theme as well.

  • the editing wasn't all that creative...

  • this theme would be alot more suited to Star Trek Enterprise lol

  • it's good but i think they picked the right music... cool video thought ;-D

  • Well...it doesn't have the cheesy 80s synth throughout like the 1st/2nd season TNG theme did. But it also lacks the majesty of Goldsmith's theme.

It's a good piece though. Maybe it should have been in Generations.

  • It's a little pompous, but it could be worse.

  • aalternative theme sounds really cheesy

  • This theme does get better once you listen to it a few times and get past the initial surprise. The right decision was to go with a recognised ST theme and combining the original TOS fanfare with the ST TMP music was probably the best option available. I don't like the arrangement of the ST TMP theme for the TV series - it's poor to be honest. I wonder what James Horner's ST theme would have sounded like re-orchestrated for TV!

  • I think the this one is just plain weird. the one for "Enterprise" is good though, great song to listen to while driving.

  • I can see why they didn't use this version, it's not that good compared to the one they used.

  • I think they might have done this in the event that Paramount didn't let them use the Motion Pictures theme as they did. Also,, Jerry Goldsmith was one that did not like his music tampered with. Witness the dispute he and Ridley Scott had over the original Alien Soundtrack. I'm not sure what happened eventually, but at least we got what we got.

  • There's a video on YouTube of the TV show Enterprise's opening credits with Dennis McCarthy's theme from Genreations which works very well i.m.o.

  • Cool Sound , i have it on CD but i think the

James Horner Version is really better,

    sorry 4 my english ! :-)

  • To by honest, either theme works really well with the opening credits. What would've been interesting is if they switched themes halfway through the run of the show

  • Agree, I would prefer using multiple theme songs.

I did improve shows like Babylon 5 or even Enterprise; the Mirror universe theme was really fitting.

  • It's better than the Enterprise theme. (I know - I'm damning with faint praise.)

  • wow. i never knew this existed. The real theme is better though.

  • Hm. This comes off as a little generic. I'm glad they went with the theme they did.

  • It kinda bothered me how the sound of the enterprise carried through space in the original...looks like you got rid of that though.

  • Does anyone posting here have the music CD Star Trek: The Next Generation (Vol.1) Encounter at Farpoint? The very last track of this CD, completely composed and conducted by Dennis McCarthy for the pilot episode, is an alternate theme he composed for the main title to TNG. The studio decided to use the theme from The Motion Picture instead, to try to lure in watchers of the original cast's show and films.

  • This is the alternate them you are referring to

  • @BlueEyedCubTN ....I had it on cassette, believe it or not, and LOVED it!!! Love the movie theme to keep the continuity, but in my Federation heart, lol, I believe this WAS better.

  • Not as good, It made me laugh.

  • I'm sorry, but that has got to be the gayest music ever LOL

  • i agree

  • why even comment

  • Had they used this, I'd have turned the pilot off, and never come back. What cheese!

  • yeah i know

  • Definitely, I would have just shit on the coats.. just so they say "WHO SHIT ON THE COATS?!?" and I'd respond with "Youtube search Alternative Star Trek: TNG Theme" and thank whoever made that music...

  • Was this theme written by Dennis McCarthy?

  • Kinda glad they went with the theme at the end of TMP

  • I would like to hear this theme, and the theme they used in the rest of the show made into one song! That would be awesome!

  • This has more of an action-adventure feel to it. AWESOME!

  • Sounds like galaxy quest theme

  • I disagree that this score was terrible I like it. Why I like it cause its give the The next generation spirt of their own. Cause when they decided to use First star trek movie score as the theme for the next generation then their will always be comparision why was the next generation like the Orignal series. Do you see when I'm going from ane this alternative theme would of made next generation feel indenpendent show not tied to the reins of the orignal series.

  • Yeah, alot of people don't know that Dennis McCarthy (Ds9/Generations) also wrote a theme for Next gen. It was so contrived from Goldsmith they decided to just use THAT theme. Good thing too, i say

  • This "Alternate Theme" is actually on one of the original Soundtrack Cd's of Star Trek The Next Generation. So no wonder it syncs up just fine. And sorry, lordseshomaru86...IT IS TREK BY ANY STANDARD....

  • Sorta reminds me of the 4th movie...I'll stick with the original version.

  • This theme is AWESOME! Action-adventure. kirk would be proud

  • Anyone else thinkin' . . . "Spaceballs"?

  • Galaxy Quest.

  • spaceballs is more like another space movie.....gulp(nervouse as all eyes turn agrily on the outspoken blasphemer)

  • God not wonder it wasnt used it sucks lol

  • I was watching some of the first season TNGs, and it seems like they use the 2nd melody from this song (the one starting at 0:58) for some of the episodes - usually at the end.

  • uggh. This isn't Trek by any standards..

    terrible

  • They should have used this theme for ''Enterprise''.

  • I agree absolutely, it even synchs-up perfectly.

(I've tried it. Yes, I have too much time on my hands...)

  • Oh, and I love this theme, I often find myself humming it as I have it in mp3 format, just incase I actually do something trekky with my videos... :P

  • To all those who don't like this theme:

Watch the first season of TNG and listen to the music in-show, you'll find they DID use the theme, but as incidental music rather than title music...

As for Riker's beard, they did this as to some, he apparently looked too much like Shatner in TOS, so he grew the beard...

  • It's cheesy. It's campy.

And I LOVE it because of that. They should use this if they ever do another Trek show.

  • Oh God. I started humming this today and I can't get it out of my head. I like it better now.

  • This is definitely the TNG format that might have been...too bad you couldn't add the sound effects, because that really would have made it special! But I agree with slidecage...it wasn't as good as the theme that was actually used, which was a variation of the Original Series theme followed by an abbreviated version of the theme from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

  • Adding in the sound effects would be pretty easy, you have the warp sound earlier already, and with some good voice sounding, the passing by sound could be replicated!

  • True, but you've still got the background music to worry about if you can't isolate the sound effects!

  • LOL, I kind of like it. They should have used this for the theme in Galaxy Quest, would have been a good parody.

  • Man, this one's terrible compared to the original. Cheesy yes.

  • It sounds like it would work with something like Buzz Lightyear. "To infinity and beyond!" is what came to mind when I first heard this.

  • Korngold does Star Trek! :) ;)

  • Sounds like Wormhole Xtreme or something.
