It does happen to hook whales when deep sea fishing. They don't strike the lure hook but if they happen to pass by the lure and they brush the hook they do get caught on your line and they simply swim away naturally taking all ur line away and eventually snapping the line when its done. He did hook a whale, they passed right next to his lines and he knew what he was doing; he tried driving towards the the whale to create slack in the line so the hook can get loose.
