  • Love this song. I've heard many performers sing Summertime.. I think she did a awesome job singing the song her way..

  • the best version performed by luciano pizzichinni

  • It would be nicer if it was a little lower

  • Not Charlotte's best. ...at all.

  • uh look up charlotte church she is a real opera singer 0_o

  • check out the version she does from the movie, I'll Be There...it was perfect. Much better than this.

  • amazing i am shivering ( i hope it is the appropriate word )

    > shiver (verbe)

    Ecouter la définition

    frémir.

    frissonner.

    grelotter.

    trembler.

    fracasser.

    se fracasser.

  • But she's not Ella,Or Billie,or Janis.Period.

  • @GIORGOSGUNIT thank god!!

  • Comment removed

  • I can't even- I mean, what is the point of using classical technique if she is going to ruin it by trying to singing it pop-ish-ly ? Of course the placement is going all to hell, it's ridiculous! This way you won't do neither genres the proper way :P At least that's my opinion :b

And btw, she's using a mic (which is totally not legit if you're an opera singer) AND you can still hear the orchestra over her voice in some parts. Double fail, I'd say.

  • Could listen to this a thousand times and rarely ever tire of hearing such delight!

  • This was written for opera, and Church has the ability to sing opera, whatever her current interests are. The arrangement is great, and fresh. She is young, so why not explore musical diversity, with or without the genes!

  • phantastic!!!

  • "hating" is an annoying word because it implies that you're not entitled to have your opinion. I understand the problem with trolling and people just generally being rude but that's not the case here. Nobody has the right to get offended by what I *honestly* think about her voice.

I don't care whether this is opera or jazz (not that it really matters). I think that she has slipped into trying to replicate another singer instead of practicing her own voice properly. Sounds like she has a cold.

  • I Think her voice is nice, but just not for this song. Leontyne price has always done a better job.

  • HER PLACEMENT PERPLEXES ME! LOL WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?! she's horrible :( its a shame she's famous when there are so many better singers who basically live outside

  • @Xtrakoolness

    absolutely! she's HORRIBLE!!

  • a little bit much for her to pull of..

  • I'm not hating but it was a bit like listening to a broken record of someone trying to imitate a typical black vocalist. I wish, I wish, I wish people my age would try to be more creative and independent instead of follow this, follow that.

  • If you've heard Ella Fitzgerald impossible to like this version even if the approach is different ... it's just that I have to say :D

  • what in the world is wyclef doing in this setting o.O

  • She sounds like a student attempting this song. I like it when sung by a real opera singer or Jazz ;)

  • @HeidelbergSoprano psh stop hatin :P

  • I like her and opera, but this is not my cup of tea. owwww...

  • Billie is Queen of this song and you know it, her recording of 1938 with artie shaw and Louis Armstrong is the ultimate truth

  • Dreadful!!!.... I have gone through about 10 versions of this song trying to find my favourite and Sam Cooke's version is the best by far, sung the way it should be sung, smoothly......

  • Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong did it best by far. Did NOT like this version.

  • i never realized how unattractive she is o_o

  • A modern spin while keeping the operatic voice, Nice!

  • why 57 dislikes?? to those who disliked, you people are DINGOS! freak all you jeolous haters!

  • Charlotte Church has a wonderful voice and she sings beautifully but nobody could ever sing this song better than Janis Joplin <3

  • @FIALISFAIL This song was made for high pitch singers.

  • @FIALISFAIL but Ella Fitzgerald

  • I heard about 5 different versions of this song today, and this is the worst.. BY FAR.

  • Technically sound, but it has no feeling. Charlotte has a beautiful voice, but I feel that she falls well short here. Blues don't come from your diaphragm.

  • sacre bleu! he is so crisp the duo is perfect

  • Excellent!

  • I love her voice. This is very creative and beautiful.

  • When she sings it "opera style" why all the "curles" around? It seems kinda funny to me.

  • Charlotte, do you remember you sang this in Tokyo!! The video is available in youtube.

Thanks for this valued upload. Regard,

    Tomoya

    xx

  • Wyclef Jean looks like a monkey.

  • Ira Gershwin wrote this song as an opera, and I feel that Church did a great job.

  • @jarodwilllow I have a C.Church dedication page!!!

  • she is fat in this vid. hope she loses a few pounds

  • @emeraldweapon85 Fat? Don't be pathetic!

  • @copperpotbaby Yes fat. Like a beached whale. Anyone who has a double chin and a face a mile wide should drop a few pounds. She use to be half the woman she is now. You may not think she is fat, but there are alot of people out there with low standards. If you really want to know what pathetic is, it is ppl like you. People who say ohh their not fat ,they are just husky and it ok to be a little fat. Its not thier falut their genes make them fat. I guess bad eating/excersise is irrelevant.

  • @emeraldweapon85 I suppose ur so perfect then! Charlotte's clearly not fat at all and it is people like u who cause teenagers to become anorexic! I believe that most people eat the wrong things and genes certainly do play a part in a person's weight; I don't suppose u have bothered to read about metabolism? Those with a slower one r thin due to it taking longer for the food inside to be turned into fat; Those, maybe Charlotte, with a faster one cause food to become fat far quicker!

  • @copperpotbaby clearly your an idiot. You have it ass backwards. Slow metabolism=slower calorie burn Fast metabolism=fast calorie burn. Slow metabolic rate is usually due lack of activity. The mitocondria are constantly carring out the Krebb cycle and making ATP. The more one moves or excersises the higher their metabolic rate will be. If you would have payed attention in gade school you would have known that. If their were more ppl like me America would not have turned into a nation of fatties

  • @emeraldweapon85 Ur an ignorant piece of crap who has n respect for anyone! Metabolism and body shape go hand in hand and I know many office worker, who r thin, but never put on weight despite their lack of exercise! Paid attention in GADE school? PRAT! Well, I'm not from America so that's ur problem!

  • @copperpotbaby I have plenty of respect for ppl. Just none for those like you. Thank God you don't live in America. We have enough of your type around here making ppl believe it is ok to be fat and that there are no health problems related to it. Liberal bastards. caught my spelling error, but it isn’t as bad as having a whole concept ass backwards. Yes metabolism and body shape do go hand in hand. BUT WHAT IM FUCKIN SAYIN YOU DUMB CUNT IS THAT YOU CAN INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM BY EXCERSING

  • I found this on a web page Your body size and composition. If you weigh more or have more muscle mass, you will burn more calories, even at rest. So overweight people are more likely to have a faster metabolic rate — not a slower one. Maybe ur the one who didn't listen or was too pig headed to, in school?

  • @copperpotbaby How fuckin stupid are you. Ok ok this one web page beats everything that scientist and Dr.'s have been PROVING for the last 20 years. Yes if you are overwieght b/c you have huge muscles you will burn calories. BUT IT IS B/C THEY HAVE MUSCLES NOT FAT!!!! Being FAT DOES NOT BURN CALORIES. Just b/c they are short of breath all the time does not mean they are running. Some needs to keep their brain turned on and use some common fuckin sense.

  • @copperpotbaby It is ppl like you that defend such things that has helped the country i love be ok with being fat. Noone is saying starve yourself or go puke b/c that is just as unhealthy. Being fat is more or less a lifesyle choice. There are some that can't help it it's true. But when the stats are like this ..34% of adults age 20 years and over who are obese and 37% of adults age 20 years and over who are overweight (and not obese)....It ells me ppl are lazy and eat like crap. and you approve

  • @emeraldweapon85 I take offence to the rudeness made towards C. Church as she's clearly not overweight and to any extreme that is unhealthy! 34% of adults being overweight? This hasn't been my experience and shouldn't the Govt. make veg and fruit cheaper to buy, instead of all these cheaper fatty foods that people r forced to buy and become addicted to? Schools used to serve chips, burgers and other canned drinks, so who is to blame? By shouting abuse at an obese person is very unhelpful, bully!

  • @copperpotbaby Read the facts. That is the yearly stat report from the dept of health. Typical Liberal blaming the gov that ppl are fat. I don't think you have been to the grocery store b/c healthy food is cheaper than going to a fast food place. It isn't about money it is about being lazy. If they are poor red beans and rice can feed a family of 4 for a week and it cost less than 15 bucks. It just that it takes longer than 3min.

  • @copperpotbaby If the kids are fat it is the parents fault for not packing them a a healthy snack. like an apple or carrots. Both cost less than a dollar. If they can buy a scratch off ticket they can buy a damn apple. I'm sick of hearing crap that lays the blame on other ppl. They need to get some self-respect and self-discipline and stop blaming other people for thier problems. They need to be more responsible. And those who support these lazy ppl are just as bad.

  • @copperpotbaby This is America and there is no excuse. It's not fault of the Gov, schools, or fast food industy. It is lazy ass ppl. America is the only country where the poor are fat and the rich get lipo. If you can buy fast food you can buy decent food. Eating out is always more expensive than eating in. I still stand by my statement that it is not normal for a woman in her prime to have 3 chins

  • @copperpotbaby Since when was it the sole responsibility of the schools to feed kids. What happened to the parents raising their own kids. I agree hamburgers, chips and soda is bull. At my school we had milk, juice, or water and food was always healthy. The soda chips and candy were there, but you had to pay money for it. If they were poor they ate free healthy food, if they had money they ate like crap. Again it is about personal resonsiblility, not blaming someone else for personal problems.

  • @emeraldweapon85 Schools, during the 1980s, only served fatty foods here in England so they caused people to have weight probs! Your the worse person to advice anyone about weight issues as ur naive about metabolism! A fast metabolism means that energy is created quicker, but fat is also converted at the same time! A smaller person may eat just as much, but their metabolism is slower, so food isn't converted into fat as fast. This can be used up later after activity! I suggest u read a book!

  • @copperpotbaby Slower metabolism means it takes less metabolic energy (ATP) to carry out bodily functions. Slow metabolism means slow calorie burn. Indicative of a sedentary life style. The ppl you know in your office than can eat like a pig & not gain a pound have a high metabolic rate. High metabolic rate means they burn off calories much quicker. Think reptiles and birds. Reptiles slow metab. Birds fast Metab. That is just in a nutshell. Before bitchin at me anymore go check your facts.

  • @emeraldweapon85 Slower metabolisms mean that food takes longer to be turned into fat; In other words, it is harder to get rid of, by exercising, so these people usually have more weight! Also, they have bigger builds! A thinner person may be more greedier, but because their metabolism is quicker, they're able to burn this up quicker into energy and lose the weight! I hope this changes ur perception of people's weight in future! I am medium build and it is impossible to put on weight!

  • Dat aint Billy holiday or Janis. It scared the shit out of me !!

  • @pentytake5 don't listen then!

  • @copperpotbaby wish i had not

  • WTF

  • @MildredLudewig go away!

  • WTF!!!

  • "Wicked" is not good - "Holy" is good you idiot. I agree with Thorney and Bestman.

  • Wonderful!

  • Oy. Charlotte is great, but conteporary is not her thing.

  • does anybody know how to get the guitar part for this song

  • earthy light lady anima

  • wtf...

  • Love the soul in this version! :)

  • if she sang this with a piano, it would be magical. i hate the sound of the guitar here!

  • OH NO!!! THIS IS NOT SINGING!!!!

JUST TRY TO REACH THE HIGH NOTE! THATS ALL!!!

  • This is an incredible voice she has and the best of i have ever heard sing this song!

  • Finally someone who can sing this song. Yeah it was a jazzier rendition but it worked. Great job.

  • slightly killed the song much ?

  • wooooow

  • sounds like this would be fantastic if someone would just give her a pianist and let her do it operatically, which is clearly what she wants to do.

  • Nice guitar work, sorry to miss Church, but there is only one person that sings this as it should be sung. . with the exception of one Sam Cooke...Godbless Billy Hoilday

  • You Are Prefect!

  • If you don't like it you should probably take it up with the dead white guy who wrote the opera. Gershwin wrote it that way. I think Charlotte did a really good job with a difficult piece and we should be grateful for a bit of soul courtesy of Wyclef.

  • zero soul. too much trying to be perfect.

  • Hey guess what Charlotte Church isn't? Give up? Someone who shouldn't try to be an R&B singer. She's got an awesome voice but not for that style. Wyclef...what were you thinking?

  • Fortunately Church sang this song many times, many ways.

    YouTube has another version entitled:

"Charlotte Church - Summertime (Special Version)"

That version is as good as this version is bad.

Don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself.

  • @thechinadesk you're totally right! wow what a difference

way better thanks for the tip- really, Charlotte Church music can be heavenly or cringefest

  • @giuseppigiraffe

Yeah. She's inconsistent. She should be judged by her best work, not her worst.

  • Terrible!

Church did a superb rendition of this same song in the movie "I'll Be There."

That version is posted on YouTube also. Google it. Listen to it. Like day and night.

  • have a listen to Megan Thomas Summertime

  • shit guitarist?... wow you have no idea

  • i like her movie version better in 'ill be there'

  • She has a beautiful voice, but the song does not suit her.

  • Sorry but Charlotts voice does not suit this AT ALL! now compare this with Mica Paris and you'll see what I mean.

  • @eli76ful charlotte is remarkable and a complete different singer than a black woman!

  • @eli76ful u go and listen to the black woman!

  • @copperpotbaby You'll have to be more concise in your statement here. First you say, "you go and listen": To what? Then you say "the black woman" - Which black woman, and what has colour to do with anything?

  • @eli76ful Maybe, u should re-read the comment that i was replying to, as it may jog ur memory about which black woman u originally mentioned in ur first post! You tell me what colour has got to do with anything? Foreigners r much more bothered about this than any of us here in Britain, like you? Also, I believe that the white woman-Charlotte Church, has an incredible voice! I hope the fact that I've described her by her ethnic origin doesn't offend u or make u confused again? I didn't use n word

  • @copperpotbaby Keep your knickers on. and stop making so many assumptions. You tube rage is alive and well x

  • @eli76ful u people must surely have no life as u all believe that u r so hard done by, here in England! To feel so sensitive about the way I described Ms. Paris just shows why integration is impossible here, as you'll never be able to live and think like other white English people! We r the supreme race, wouldn't want to be any other colour or nationality but u people seem to have the problem with ur own image! You were born like it, so ur stuck with it! Hope it's not contagious!

  • @copperpotbaby Not allot I can say in response to that, but with all my heart I wish that God may bless you.

  • @eli76ful God created man in his image, so what has colour got to do with anything? If u prefer Mica Paris' version then listen to it and why criticise Charlotte's version! It's the same syndrome as with the ex runner Colin Jackson, who claimed that he'd be loved much more if he was white with blue eyes! He's obviously a prat and unable to comprehend that we don't like athletics here, especially hurdles! Why do black people attack things that they don't like? Angry race, indeed!

  • @copperpotbaby Why are you discussing skin colour and ranting at me? I merely had an opinion that Mica Paris suits the song better, I did'nt even mention colour or race in my first statement nor did it enter my head. As soon as you accept the fact that people have their own different opinions about things then you might be able to relax a bit more!

  • She has a great classical voice. No one can easily sing like this. This is the real character of the song. She's singing perfectly in her age.

  • wot a shit guitarist

  • Why ruin a good song? I never could understand the fuss about CC. Her voice is shrill and unmelodic.

  • @gmarmas Charlotte is superb and if u feel this way then why listen?

  • @gmarmas go away!

  • great, nice channel i m a singer visit my channel ;)

  • watch?v=muRhvKN9rn0

  • OMG is shit :)

  • Worst version ever seen. Shit voice. Fucked last note up. Wyclef your sick, but wtf are you doin on the same stage

    As her

  • While I'm normally very impressed with Charlotte Church... I am not impressed with this rendition. I realise she's young in this video but., still... Maybe she shouldn't have sung this. Porgy and Bess is big stuff.

  • Thiz iz a pretty song!!!!!!!!

  • Worst version ever.

  • @Thorneycroft1937 One of the best versions I ever heard. I don't know what you're hearing???

  • @RisingOfThePhoenixx You don't listen to this kind of music very much do you....

  • @AFD012 I'm a musicology major so what do you think?

  • @AFD012 And oh I have 14 different versions of Summertime including another favorite version by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald (I really like this classy version), Billy Stewert (nice and poppin'), Fantasia Barrino (raw and emotional), Nina Simone (earthy), Janis Joplin (another unique twist), Jill Scott and George Benson (nice tribute to the past), Billy Holiday, Miles Davis.... need I go on??? Don't play me. Music is my religion.

  • @RisingOfThePhoenixx Music isn't a religion, and how is this version better? The music is more modern, but the girls vocal control is off. She's good, but she's not amazing. A musicologist studies the history, styles, and uses of music; I'm a classically trained musician, I play the music, so I just might know a thing or two about tone and pitch. I'm not saying that you don't know music either, I'm just saying that being a musicologist isn't much justification.

  • @AFD012 she's amazing to her many fans, so go and listen to someone of ur personal choice, instead!

  • agreed its a awful version but fantastic singing.

  • @Thorneycroft1937 I have a C.Church dedication page and we all know that she is remarkable!!

  • @Thorneycroft1937 why don't u put ur head in the oven!

  • @copperpotbaby I would rather listen to the many other versions of this song who are mostly better then this than put my head in the oven. But then again i would rather put my head in the oven than vote BNP.

  • @copperpotbaby Well, u why choose to visit this page, decide that u don't like this song and bother to make such a negative comment? Also, we live in a democracy and unlike the systems used in AFRICA, so, until ur mob take over and create carnage on our streets- Oh, they have already done this-I'll vote for any legal party of my choice! People like u, vote for the very parties who colonies and make money from ur homeland-strange? I luv it when a muslim votes Labour or Tory!

  • @Thorneycroft1937 not bad... just different

  • Why doesn't he actually hold the guitar?

  • Damn :O

a nice cover for an eternal classic

while the music was sort of "undefined" in terms of flavor, her voice got it going good :)

  • Muy muy bien, un diez por este video Saludos;

  • I wonder how many people saying she's crap can sing like this.

Not many. And she's 15 here. Singing live.

    Shut up.

  • Worst version of this classic tune ever recorded...

guitar playing is terrible and the beat had ruined the flow of this ballad.

    What crap.

Charlotte Church is about as well matched to this sort of tune as a monster truck is for the Ballet.

  • @Rexicano I see. So thats why they got a standing ovation in Carnegie Hall

  • @milewalker1

    And what's your point?

That a room full of people in NYC can't possibly be wrong?

    Right.

Hitler had a whole city cheering him on at Nuremberg.

Sarah Palin had millions voting for her dumb ass. Probably you too.

You're just too stupid. People line up for crap all the time.

  • @Rexicano Pelosi, Reed, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, TIm Guitner, and last but not least..Obama, real winner crowd there.

  • @EricVonZipper2

Last time I looked Obama was quite the winner....

or maybe you didn't notice he was the President of the USA?

And you're still bitter I suppose.

    Too bad.

  • @Rexicano where you see Obama at?

  • @Rexicano where is Obama At in the vid?

  • @TRENT32

No NEED to spam me ...

    I didn't see him myself as I could not stand to watch this whole dreadful version;

I WAS RESPONDING to some asshole who hates Obama who wrote that he was there with a bunch of Politicos—and called Obama a LOSER. MY POINT was that Obama won the election. UM-KAy? Hence, a winner, not Loser...

Read the whole exchange and then go ask him where Obama is...because I don't care.

God, this is an awful recording.

  • @Rexicano , I am bitter about the $14 trillion that we can't possibly cough up, socialized health care that isn't working well in other countries, and probably won't work here either. And now most swing voters have buyers remorse, can we say 1 term president.

  • Well! Courage young singer! But what about to be faithfull to the "style" you prefer or people like to hear?Want to be a lyric singer, work on it!Want to be a pop singer work it on also! You have qualities. The way you work be a good example to all the lyrics or pops young singers.Don ´t mix styles! Take a good care of your voice. You can.

  • I love listening to this version of this song. I think Charlotte sounds amazing and Wyclef really gives it extra with his talent on guitar. She's incredible and was only 15 yrs old when this was recorded. What a talented young lady.

  • I don't like it. :S

  • Nicely done

  • I'm surprised to find myself saying this but it's really not that bad. I don't think her voice is well suited to jazz/blues but she still didn't do a bad job with this version. I've seen other versions of summertime, that she's done, were just plain horrible.

  • The best! Porgy & Bess

  • living is easy, but singing not always.........

  • una jovencita con mucho talento, la felicito por que es dificil escuchar voces que realmente deleiten el iodo mexicano

  • Why does everyone have to compare this to that that to this just enjoy this performance if you go back and actually do your homework she is actually getting into the spirituality and lyric and emotion of this Gershwin piece...she is able to articulate in a different manner than her other more rigid versions in more rigid settings, sometimes emotion and depth can get lost when you are so focused on dynamic markings and levels here she was able in her own way to let go and be free-er!

  • Very immature voice. It is good, but not great. She just doesn't get it.

  • @crazycellist973 Her technique is definitely lacking. But immature, she's 15 here. She has a mature voice for her age. Maybe not the most mature, but lyric voices without a lot of color and weight never sound as mature.

  • this song has always been better without any lyrics, even when the zombies did it.

I can't say i'm a fan of the opera versions, however, I liked wyclefs guitar solo

  • i have her cd...it gives me goosebumps : D

  • @TheCamillejohnson68 I agree with you, she sounds awesome here. I don't know what everyone else is complaining about. She is a beautiful young woman with an amazing voice.

  • I'm reading all these comments about "poor Charlotte" and her "immature voice". Have any of you ever heard her sing anything besides this? She is an awesome singer! This song, I agree is throaty for her, but she definately is Not an amature when it comes to voice.

  • @Mrmanwoman1 Then you are deaf.

  • @Mrmanwoman1 I disagree, but we will have to wait until she is about 30 to find out.

  • @Mrmanwoman1 I agree :P This isn't her best performance, but just about everything else that she's sang is absolutely beautiful. Personally, I don't care if her voice is "immature", I just know that I, along with many other people, enjoy listening to her. I don't like playing music critic everytime I listen to a song, because if we all did, we'd find that TONS of artists have little imperfections.

  • her voice gives me a headache.

  • Interesting mixture of soul and classical opera voice...

  • she has a lovely voice but it looks like she is lipsining

  • @ellie6781 The video and audio stream aren't synchronous..

  • @ellie6781 This is beacuase the tracking is off.

  • oh poor Charlotte...she just needs to stop. All of her songs are in her throat, and this technique is getting out to children that actually want to become good singers, not just famous ones. "Popera" is what they're starting to call it I think, but I'll just stick with bad technique.

  • @PianistandFencer I agree that she is definitely throaty here. But not all of her songs are throaty. I think they really pushed her voice too much for her young age. She was only 14 or 15 here. I don't know what the technique limitations are of such a young voice. Some technique (be it poor or not) they taught her I'm sure so she could sing more difficult songs, in spite of her immature voice.

  • modern and opera can go really good but this just doesn't float my boat. she ruined it

  • i could never sing like that cause my voice will get dry lol

  • ma è tutta spoggiata!!!! ma perchè la fanno cantare?
