no dislikes....but only 53 votes... i'd like to blame it on the times and people's shitty taste in music...but its not like this shit, and it is good, even great shit, was ever popular. i guess i hope the cult status grows and spreads far enough to become really popular. as in pulp fiction rather than donnie darko
Dark Magus, Agharta and Pangae. To my opinion, the trully best three music albums that have totally changed my perception of music. And they can never get old, they're simply timeless.
Al Foster on drums!!! What a great feel he had, a heavy tribal funk thing, made the whole vibe of the music heavier than a pure jazz drummer would have. Gave a deeper spacing and pocket to play into. Nice!!!
Dark Magus is part of a trio of live albums featuring this band. The others are Agharta and Pangaea. Agharta had a US release in the 70s, but for years, Dark Magus and Pangaea were available only as expensive Japanese imports, that is, if you could even find them. I was very happy when Pangaea became available in the US in '90 and Dark Magus followed in the late '90s. These three albums are the sound of the continents slamming up against each other.
There's something deeply unsettling in this music, like Miles was somehow exorcising something of his own demons in a way. None of that takes away from the exuberant power of the music, the amazing musicianship and interaction from his extraordinary band, and brilliance of the music, of course. But there's something dark, demonic, almost sinister in this recording. It feels like the edges haven't been sanded off like they have in so much sanitized modern stuff, and it gives it an eerie quality.
In my opinion, Miles Davis is the most musically diverse creature to ever have existed. This is incredible. One can easily see why he is called "a seeker" and "the prince of darkness"
It's hilarious how blatantly Painkiller (Zorn, Harris, Laswell) ripped off this album.. Haha. (Won't stop me from loving everything they ever did though!)
Anyway, this is some true genius right here, what a cracking album
Once again leave it to Miles, Mr. Visionary --to have an improv band playing down in the deep dark realm of Dub frequencies before the rest of the world outside Jamaica got hip to 'the low end theory'. (all apologies to ATCQ).
If you ask me my opinion, Dark Magus is LIVE and otherwordly. None of the studio albums compare because they aren't live. DM is improvisational transcendence and ecstasy. Plus I like the stripped down core, just the greatest rhythm section ever with wild horns on top. They had eliminated the jazz players (Mclaughlin, Corea etc) and it was necessary. "Corner" is transitional, while DM is the fruition of this underground period and one of the greatest artistic statements ever.
Someone here found the mot juste: these albums are the sound of the continents slamming against each other.

If Hendrix had lived a few more years, it would be him on guitar with Miles.
