  • Love both Benny's (and Martha's)version and Ziggy's version.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.

  • In the Benny Goodman Story, It is Ziggy appearing to play his solo, however Mannie Klein is playing the actual solo.

  • Viewing the Benny Goodman story when this tune is played at Carnegie Hall, the artist playing it does not look like Ziggy but his name appears in the credits, however, sadly by the time the movie was made he had lost his ability to provide the sound track and the trumpet you hear is that of the great Mannie Klein.

  • One of the most beautiful Trumpet sounds of all time !!!!!!

  • I really wish there was a love button instead of like!

  • I was related to ziggy... never had the chance to meet him. As you can see my youtube channel name has the name elman in it.

  • Great song. What album is this from?

  • Thank you.

  • Love that Ziggy trumpet, too cool.

  • Great =D

  • When Benny Goodman heard this recording {originally released as "Freilach In Swing"}, he wanted to "cover" it with lyrics (which Johnny Mercer provided), and a Martha Tilton vocal, with Ziggy reprising his solo. At the time, Elman was under contract to RCA's Bluebird subsidiary to record for them for a year...

  • Gorgeous.GJM

  • What a magnificent contribution such wonderful musicians and their people made to America! It's like it was yesterday and the speed break fooled everyone--you either got into it or left the floor breathless and laughing! Wonderful

  • The recording posted here was recorded by Ziggy Elman and his orchestra for RCA Victor on December 28, 1938. Less than a week later on January 2, 1939 Benny Goodman's Orchetsra (with vocalist Martha Tilton, and Elman again) recorded it for RCA Victor and THAT version was a big hit. The Elman version is rarer. Has it been issued on CD? The Tilton version is on RCA's CD: The Fabulous Big Band Collection

  • I'm not actually sure, I have both versions, but this one is off an LP set from, i believe time life or readers digest, since it was from them, im guessing its on cd somewhere if not at least maybe re-issued by them. thanks for listening!

  • The Martha Tilton version was in fact recorded February 1,'39. The Elman Bluebird version is available on "Ziggy Elman: 1938-1939." This CD was put out by Classics, a French label. It's out of print, but it turns up on ebay and Amazon. It's great!

  • he looks like a wierdie or a nerd genius...

  • Elman played many instruments proficiently. The swing versions of this song all came from his adaptation of a yiddish composition. I'd put him in the genius category.Go to my channel for his solo with Dorsey, about 1941.His solo with Goodman in 1939 is also swingin'.WillieD.

  • Can anyone tell me what is the tune @ 1.50....I am greek and its sounds realy greek. I know that Goodman use to paly greek folk tune but I am not sure if that is one!!! Can please tell me?

  • its jewish klezmer music. freilach

  • Great for folk dancing.

  • Where has all this great big band music disappear

  • I'm a bit confused. Is this song, an instrumental, recorded by Ziggy Elman and

his orchestra?. It includes the Klezmer

part at the end. Yet I remember this song

as a vocal, and then going into the Klezmer

ending by Ziggy Elman? Do you the version by

    Benny Goodman and Ziggy Ellman?

  • The music to this song was written by Ziggy Elman and the words by Johnny Mercer. And it was sung by Martha Tilton with the Benny Goodman orchestra. Also, this type of music was called "Frailach"(which in Yiddish, means "Happy") from the 30's through the 60's. The term "Klezmer" was coined much later...in the 70's.

  • Thank you for you reply. Yet this version here

is completely instrumental. Do you have by chance the recording with the vocal by

Martha Tilton, Benny Goodman and the Fraylach

part by Ziggy Ellman. If you have it, please

upload it. It's not on youtube. I checked.

  • The Benny Goodman/Ziggy Elman/Martha Tilton version was the NUMBER ONE song in the US in 1939. Which is why it was featured in its entirety in the movie "The Benny Goodman Story"(1956). I don't have it. But, like you, I wish someone would post it. Its a great version.

  • GGreat post, where did you find that great photo of Ziggy...thank much

    Poppa Gus

ps if you could the post the duet the one with Harry James and Ziggy, with Benny Goodman, I wouldd love it

  • ...the photo im not really too sure, awhile back i went searching and also scanned some pictures and saved them, but this might have come from the net. I dont think i have that version, but ill try to find it and post it soon for you.

  • THANK YOU! A lost masterpiece, Ziggy was one of the greatest. It is sad to me that people today listen to music---but they don't hear what is saying. Being a trumpet player I truly appreciate this artistry.

  • Thats great, something to think about, true, music is nothing like it used to be, im a trumpet player myself, actually...

  • Terrific sound.....you are the best!! Thanks soooooooooo much.....You made my day! Nothing like Ziggy on that horn.

  • glad to help... ive got quite a bit of harry james too

  • Thanks, love it!

  • if any of you guys are looking for something inparticular let me know, ill be posting more for awhile, but ill get to requests first.

  • Hey, great work! Thanks a swinging lot!
