Do you know the hearing aid were invented back then, and they were the size of the cellphone. The talking at the end of the shot is self explanatory - during silent films it was pretty much okay to talk on stage, especially when shot is over.

The top part of the shadow is dark because the light can't shine through the thick coat and hat as well as it does through the skirt which is why the skirt part of the shadow is lighter. Perhaps she / he should have worn a slip???
Oh and about the shadow, if you all didn't know, the whole footage isn't shown here. In the whole footage the first man's shadow also becomes less dense and lighter as he walks further to the left. The thing is, that's the penumbra of the man as his shadow falls on the footpath and if you look at the shadows of both the first and second man (or woman) you'll notice their shadows lighten up as it falls on the footpath after it has crossed over from the wall and signboard.

Time travel is not possible for things made of matter unless it travels at nearly the speed of light and that is not possible because of not only the tremendous amount of energy required (that would have to be more than the output) but a living thing couldn't survive that surge of energy. The reason for the light shadows getting brighter is from the sun reflecting it from a storefront window. Humans will never travel in time. We'll nuke ourselves before that happens.
I think the reason for the lighter shadow at the base is because the woman is wearing a light summer skirt, and THAT'S what accounts for some light passing through the material - not a bloody hollo-deck!

I love how people's simple reasoning for this not being a time traveler is because they're were no cell phone towers or satelites back there so it can't be time travler. If we could perfect the technology of time travel, do you honestly think they couldn't perfect a cell phone that didn't need cell towers or satelites?

Food for thought! UFO's have been seen throughout history even in ancient times. So why has no one suggested an alien disguised in human form reporting back to their ship. If they have been visiting since ancient times studying us why couldn't this be one of those visits. Possibly to see if we were ready for the \technology of cell phones and time travel. The problem is, if you look at the rest of the film, the man's shadow also becomes lighter as he walks past the zebra. Lighter shadows can be caused by a secondary light source. Also, there were hearing devices at the time that were more box-shaped so the woman could have been hard of hearing. It does make for an interesting theory though.

The shadow is diferent because she is wearing a skirt, and some light is passing through the fabric. You watch too much startrek...but thanks for trying.
Notice how the top of the second shadow is dark, but it gets more transparent as it goes towards the feet?. Considering tis black and white that dress could be a number of dark colours. Now im guessing that the dress thins out therefor being transparent. Hold a thin piece of material in the sunlight, for instance the skirting of a 1928 style dress?

@defundthewar - actually, hearing aids CAN unintentionally act as antennas for nearby radio transmitters if the the wiring/chips within are not well shielded. I'm not saying that's what is going on here, but it is possible for hearing aids to unintentionally pick up radio transmissions.

The shadow is NOT different than the other guy's shadow... but keeping the theory of hologram in mind, keep looking to the video, the woman/man's hat as it crosses behind the zebra, you'll see that the figure is obviously transparent, you can see through it and see the trees behind it. Which is interesting enough to believe hologram, but that is a whole different mystery on it's own... it's the 1920's and there's a hologram/being of a person... how the hell did it get there?
@nuttynunu if you watch from 1:55 through 2:00 the zebra and the saddle also become transparent just as the "time traveler" does which indicates at least to me that it is nothing more than a dissolving fade from one segment of film to the other! With all this talk on the shadow being lighter and darker, If you take a look at the shadow of the first man that passes behind the zebra, when his shadow is under the zebra, by the hind legs, it becomes clear that his shadow goes from dark to light, just as the "time traveler's" did. So, I don't think this shadow thing provides a solid basis of evidence....

His shadow when he first walks out is dark, then by the time his shadow is passing by the Zebra it is lighter. Let me guess the first person walking by is also a hologram? Give me a break. There are a few questions to be raised on this theory. If this person were a hologram, don't you think that they would be transulcent too? Why would their shadow be the only thing to be translucent? It's just not logical. It's quite possibly just a lighting malfunction. And besides, the woman's dress is probably made of some thin translucent material, letting a bit of light through.

If in fact the man is on a cell phone it cannot be technology as we use in the 21st century. There must be a satelite; as well as, local transmission towers.
In addition, charlie chaplan and the film crew would have to be aware of it.

Food for thought! UFO's have been seen throughout history even in ancient times. So why has no one suggested an alien disguised in human form reporting back to their ship. The problem is, if you look at the rest of the film, the man's shadow also becomes lighter as he walks past the zebra. Lighter shadows can be caused by a secondary light source. Also, there were hearing devices at the time that were more box-shaped so the woman could have been hard of hearing. It does make for an interesting theory though.

Notice how the top of the second shadow is dark, but it gets more transparent as it goes towards the feet?. Considering tis black and white that dress could be a number of dark colours. It is not used across town, but for two people within fairly close proximity, the wearer being someone hard of hearing. Who is conversing with him/her? Secondly, who talks into a hearing aid?

@defundthewar - actually, hearing aids CAN unintentionally act as antennas for nearby radio transmitters if the the wiring/chips within are not well shielded. I'm not saying that's what is going on here, but it is possible for hearing aids to unintentionally pick up radio transmissions.

The shadow is NOT different than the other guy's shadow... but keeping the theory of hologram in mind, keep looking to the video, the woman/man's hat as it crosses behind the zebra, you'll see that the figure is obviously transparent, you can see through it and see the trees behind it. Which is interesting enough to believe hologram, but that is a whole different mystery on it's own... it's the 1920's and there's a hologram/being of a person... how the hell did it get there?

@nuttynunu if you watch from 1:55 through 2:00 the zebra and the saddle also become transparent just as the "time traveler" does which indicates at least to me that it is nothing more than a dissolving fade from one segment of film to the other! People have speculated that's its a hearing aid device... but then I wonder if a person is alone and trying to listen to the people and their surroundings why would they be speaking at or into this device?

With all this talk on the shadow being lighter and darker, If you take a look at the shadow of the first man that passes behind the zebra, when his shadow is under the zebra, by the hind legs, it becomes clear that his shadow goes from dark to light, just as the "time traveler's" did. So, I don't think this shadow thing provides a solid basis of evidence....

There are a few questions to be raised on this theory. If this person were a hologram, don't you think that they would be transulcent too? Why would their shadow be the only thing to be translucent? It's just not logical. It's quite possibly just a lighting malfunction. And besides, the woman's dress is probably made of some thin translucent material, letting a bit of light through.
