Hi, the thumping sound is a ruffed grouse. Instead of singing like other birds, it thumps its wings on a log to attract a mate.Think of a grouse as being like a wild chicken. Its a permanent resident and doesn't migrate, and it's thumping activity is called drumming.

RobbytheLion...The seed from the Thistle is a favourite of Goldies....you can buy it cheap from any Garden Centre alonng with a special feeder....ask for Niger seed... and the Goldies will be there all day long...I have counted 21 around my single feeder....Great to see.

We used to have a big patch of scottish thistle and the goldfinches flocked to it. I'm not sure if they eat the seeds or the bugs that live on the thistle or both.

This is great for listening to at work when I need to take a quiet moment to relax. It reminds me of the birds that come to my back yard minus the traffic noise. Very nice!

I have parakeets and they just love the sound of the outdoor birds chirping away. I think they like to be part of what's going on, and whatever kind of birds are around they want to be part of the discussion! Ha!

A niger seed feeder, I had 2 male Goldfinch and a female today. Then 2 male Goldfinch and then a Purple Male. There were brown females interstpersed, but I am not skilled enogh to identifify them all sadly

you need also to keep a frequent watch over them and sometimes even bring them live food from uncontaminated soil,

The feeder is visible through the window from the kitchen table. The birds are so enjoyable to watch, that I thought I should share them on YouTube. My goal now is to try and video a hummingbird.
