My favorite version of this song on Youtube. Unforunately, the beginning is ruined by some dumb broad yakking away ("She said..."). And then she has to pipe in and talk over the music again at 0:51. It's a shame. Otherwise, the recording of this performance should be in the Smithsonian. It's perfect... and captures the true spirit of the of the song.
Thank you for such a lovely comment. Sorry about the gabby lady. Fitgerald's is a tavern and it's pretty hard to control that type of thing. Any suggestion on how to put in the Smithsonian?!!
Again thank you--I've shared your comment with some of the musicians.
In answer to your question, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" is in B-flat. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I somehow missed your comment until today.
Actually, on closer examination, it appears the "sousaphonist" is playing a helicon, which is the (more or less) immediate ancestor of the modern sousaphone. The tipoff is the relatively narrow bell, and the more focused sound.
Hi - Good to hear from someone in Malaysia and particularly from a young person. Thanks you for your nice comment. I will pass it on to the Chicago Salty Dogs.
this is absolutly awesome and a fitting tribute to the man mr norrie cox i could listen to them all nite brilliant thanks for posting a joy to all who listens
Great Music! I really like this arraangement - start funerary slow then pick up to jazzy march. Each musican's interpretation adds to the dimension, and the final really sells it!
Makes me want to move from Panama City Beach to Chicago. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to walk into a lil ole place like this and be able to sit in and play.
Great to hear from you. I do have two video clips on my channel of Norrie's band which were done a few months before his death: "Over In The Glory Land" and "Exactly Like You." Very interesting about your car racing days. You're right, Norrie was a great guy!
Thanks for the nice comment; I'll pass it along to the band when I video tape their next session which will be at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn, IL, March 27.
Who-when?-was it who said that the devil has all the good songs?A splendid version of this old favourite.Congratulations!

this is one of my favorites,it's pure, this old men gives excellen the atmosphere
in which this kind of music must be played in a bar sitting on normal chairs, just
like they are walking along the street and playing their songs
you can even see the cars behind the window driving along, that makes it so
simple, playing, should like to spend an evening in this bar
this is what this old jazz mean for me, my compliments to all these men

Something about the sepia lighting and the tone of the clarinet makes this eerie.

Fine rendition, complete with that thick, woody clarinet sound. Also, kudos to the sousaphonist for an inventive solo.
