@jwade29: giving the facts isn't "demeaning" anyone. If anything, gdawg34's description is "demeaning" of Bates. Getting his facts wrong and exaggerating the effect of the hit may work for Georgia fans but should not go uncorrected.
@fgoodwin8578 Man what is your point here? Bill Bates was one of, if not the best defensive players in the country at the time. He had the perfect line up and angle to have a big hit and decleat Herschel and if it had been another RB he would have. But Walker literally ran him over, stomped on his face, and broke two more tackles into the endzone. Dont take anything away from the greatest running back of all time.
But the BEST? You're kidding, right? Bates was so great HE WASN'T EVEN DRAFTED! He wasn't the best safety IN HIS OWN CONFERENCE! Bates was a SOPHOMORE when Walker ran over him. He WAS NOT an All SEC safety at the time; he was SECOND team All-SEC later (his junior and senior years). As I said, Herschel made a great run. Stating the facts takes nothing away from the run.
Herschel's run stands alone; exaggeration like yours demeans it.
@fgoodwin8578 Bill Bates was put on the All-American Freshman team and was inducted into the Greater Knoxville Hall of Fame. In the NFL he was elected All-Pro playing for the Cowboys and was a started as a strong safety. I never said he was the best now did I? But anyone that can start on a pro football team like the Cowboys is, in college, considered a great player. Learn ALL of the facts before you post. Herschel is the best RB to play the game so dont try to take anything away from him.
@NATERIDER122 The OP said Bates was All SEC when Herschel ran over him. That is a false statement, as I showed. That takes nothing away from Herschel. Herschel's run speaks for itself -- he doesn't need people fluffing up Bates' reputation to make himself look better. If Bates was such a great college player, why wasn't he drafted?
@fgoodwin8578 NFL thought he didnt have the all out speed to be successful but it ended up they were wrong as I showed. I agree that Herschel's run stands on its own but it makes that much better that he ran over a NFL quality hard hitting safety.
@NATERIDER122 I agree that Bates eventually BECAME an NFL quality safety.
I think we both agree that Herschel was and is a very special person and football player. As a Dallas Cowboy fan I would never cut him down. And the same for Bates. Bates was a Cowboy fan-favorite BECAUSE he beat the odds and became a Pro Bowler after going undrafted.
Hopefully we are both saying the same things but maybe in different ways. Merry Christmas,
Bates would not be All-SEC until a year later and he was only a 2nd teamer at that. Yes Herschel was a freshman but Bates was only a soph during the 1980 season. And yes it was a great run but let's make it sound like he destroyed a senior All-American on the play.
I say it once and once only pound 4 pound Hershel Walker is the fastest and strongest football player that i ever seen. Now there has been some good running backs in the history of the NFL; but the guy is 48 yrs old to the date and still competing with the youngbloods but this time he's beating up their faces You go get yo's Hershel!
Greatest college back ever. No contest. Not Sanders, Jackson, Smith, Simpson, Dorsett, Dickerson, whoever -- nobody had the combination of power, speed, and determination like Herschel had. He is the Michael Jordan of college backs.
@braininahat Yea but college and NFL are different. In the NFL, you cant just run over players like that every down. He was stopped in the Sugar bowl 1982. Penn St. Held him down. OJ Simpson had power, speed, and side to side moves. Jim Brown had Power, speed. Juke ability Walker never had. The same players you mentioned were better in the NFL. Im not saying Herschel was bad. But were talking about the greatest backs. Whoopee about college.
@rmrooster01 Obviously the NFL and College are different, and I was specific about Herschel being the best College back ever. Georgia wasn't exactly talented in every position when Herschel played; he made them very good. They won the SEC title each of the three years he played, and nobody has ever gained more yards in a three year span than Herschel: 5,259 yards with 5.3 AVG. That's production. I don't care if he walked slowly in a straight line his whole career. He was the best.
And that right there folks,in my opinion,is the greatest college football running back of all time. Imagine how many career yards the guy would have had he come back for his senior yr.
...and Bill Bates ain't no pushover...played 15 seasons with the Cowboys, and was the first special teamer to make the Pro Bowl...wanna see Bill mash Herschel?? Check out the Youtube NFL Bates video when Herschel was a NY Giant.
Herschel Walker and Bo Jackson are the only two people in modern football history that I think could have played in the Pro Level straight out of High School. They were both that physically mature.
he was amazing..... possibly the best running back in football history. He was great in the sec. helped win georgia about thier only national championship
I agree! Since last seas, I never saw him as an nfl qb. See him more like eric crouch, tommy frazier esque. Though Tebow could be useful in wild cat formation, 3rd & short. justwidge! It don't seem like TT will ever be polish enough for the nfl.
ok Herschel only played 3 years at georgia. also they have 1 more game per season these days... so really he could of gotton this: herschel: 70 - tebow: 55... oh and he's faster, stronger, and bigger. i would like to see how bad tebow will be in pro... lol he wont do very good at all.
disciplez6 he was AMAZING!!!! Oh and If Tebow left after 3 years like hershel did we might have a contest!!! Also Hershel was tough!!!! The trainer said he couldn't play because his shoulder was out of place. They popped it back in and he went in again. He rushed more after that injury in that game than anyone had rushed aganst Notre Dame that whole season, SO YOU can try again!!!
Both guys involved in this play would go on to be great Dallas Cowboys. I wonder if Herschel would joke about this to Bill when they were both in Dallas?
This never gets old. Herschel changed UGA football forever, we still talk about his legacy (and I'm class of 2010). Can't wait to hear about his MMA ventures during the Sports Legends Challenge this fall
Larry Munson's the greatest and so is Walker. There's nothing like seeing Herschel Walker run over those faded orange vols. The only reason he didn't win the heisman that year is b/c the ncaa has a stupid thing about freshman winning it. It doesn't really matter he's still the greatest ever.
Ugh...I was at that game...I was 15 years old and so fired up about opening day I couldn't stand it and then that monster ruined it...People seem to forget that UT had the ball 1st and goal on the 1 yardline with 1 minute to go in the game with a chance to win it when Randall "Can't find the handle" Morris fumbled and we lost by 1 point 16-15..We played USC the next week with another great freshman rb as well...Marcus Allen...Damn what a schedule that year.
I had the honor to see this game and Herschel's last college game.Ah,1980 Dawg fever was raging hot.hey, Ga. Tech fans you won last Sat. here. congratulations. we dawgs got over confident in the last quarter.
I was at that damn game....UT was up 15 -0 and UGA came back to win it 16-15 when Randall Morris fumbled on the 1 yard line 1st and goal with 1 minute to go...UGA went undefeated after that...Unreal...Herschel was really something special...Best RB I have ever seen.
Probably Larry's most well known call of the 80's era. I absolutely love this call. Nobody can ever or will ever call a game in half the fashion or glory that Munson did. You will truly be missed Larry. Rest easy TOP DAWG, you have done your part. Catch a few big fish for me.
You're a good man DMu. So many people on youtube talk smack without any reasoning behind it at all. People like you help me respect a program like Tennessee.
I am diehard Big Orange born in Knoxville, but that Hershel Walker was something I have never seen before or after. A beast. He is still the reason I give respect to the Bulldogs. Go Vols!
I think he knew that. Walker was the best rb to ever play in the SEC imo. Just a machine in college. Oh, and Roll Tide. We're equal opportunity fans. We love college football and we say it everywhere!
Really? Hmmm. He won a title with someone else's players. His defensive line got blown off the ball against UGA and Michigan. His secondary got victimized against UGA and Michigan. His offensive line got embarrassed against UGA and Michigan. He hasn't recruited a legitimate running back yet. Let's not forget that Auburn beat UF while Brandon Cox(!) put up numbers as good as Tebow and while Auburn's best tailback didn't play. Oh, UGA just got the top QB out of Florida. Tebow isn't even his guy.
Larry Munson - The World's Greatest Play-By-Play Man.
"You know, this game has always been called the World's Greatest Cocktail Party. Do you know what is going to happen here tonight, and up at St. Simon's and Jekyll Island, where all those Dawg people have got these condominiums for 4 days? MAN, is there going to be some property destroyed tonight!"
--Larry Munson, November 1980, after Lindsay Scott's famous catch and run to defeat the UF Gators
It kills me to say this, since I was a HUGE Herschel fan - and Tony D before that, and of course Emmitt and Marion since) but I would have to disagree. Herschel's style of running - upright and bruising - didn't lend itself to longetivity no matter how incredible of shape he was in. Although his 1,500+ yards in 88 was remarkable given how truly awful that team was. If Barry hung around, he probably woulda smoked em all. But he didn't, so long live Emmitt!
The guy played 16 years of professional football, and was one of the most productive ever. Herschel retired from the NFL 2nd all-time in total yards. He's still 8th all-time in NFL history in total yards. He's one of 6 players in NFL history to have over 60 rushing TDs and 20 receiving TDs.
And that's without even adding what he did in the USFL. He has over 24,500 total yards in his professional football career.
From 1990 thru 2007, it is Florida 15, Georgia 3. In that same time period, Florida has TWO National Championships, Georgia has a big fat ZERO! End of Discussion!
Nope, for finally whipping the crap out of UF. Since the teams that couldn't get that done were pretty good, then lookout now. And I really dig their backfield. If they can beat UF then I could see them representing the SEC for a third, consecutive National Title.
you're an idiot. georgia has been the most consistent team in the SEC east this decade. under CMR, georgia's had 3 BCS appearances, 2 SEC titles, 1 season with less than 10 wins, undefeated out-of-conference schedule. yeah, so mediocre. and to think that georgia didn't beat all 3 rivals in 2007 along with that sugar bowl victory. we're loaded next year.
What do you expect? He's Hershel Walker!

Go Dawgs!

I am diehard Big Orange born in Knoxville, but that Hershel Walker was something I have never seen before or after. A beast. He is still the reason I give respect to the Bulldogs. Go Vols!

22bigdaddy 3 years ago
how about red britches with the black jerseys for a big game like a homecomin and mayb abowl game * ahem bcs national championship game*
darkness6767 3 years ago
I think he knew that. Walker was the best rb to ever play in the SEC imo. Just a machine in college. Oh, and Roll Tide. We're equal opportunity fans. We love college football and we say it everywhere!

L.T. has been amazing but if you're going on impact to their team, the Chargers haven't done shit. Yet...

BullShit, the only thing Meyer is better at than Spurrier is whining like a bitch.
I'm a Nole but I know Spurrier was one of the best to put on the coaches head set
tjmcdoug 3 years ago
Really?

I think herschel could have been the best pro football running back of all time.Hes also a really good person.
Johansen40 3 years ago
It kills me to say this, since I was a HUGE Herschel fan - and Tony D before that, and of course Emmitt and Marion since) but I would have to disagree. Herschel's style of running - upright and bruising - didn't lend itself to longetivity no matter how incredible of shape he was in. Although his 1,500+ yards in 88 was remarkable given how truly awful that team was. If Barry hung around, he probably woulda smoked em all. But he didn't, so long live Emmitt!
Nealchafs 3 years ago
It didnt lend to longevity?
The guy played 16 years of professional football, and was one of the most productive ever. Herschel retired from the NFL 2nd all-time in total yards. He's still 8th all-time in NFL history in total yards. He's one of 6 players in NFL history to have over 60 rushing TDs and 20 receiving TDs.
And that's without even adding what he did in the USFL. He has over 24,500 total yards in his professional football career.
I dont really get what you're saying at all.
WhatDeFrock 3 years ago
From 1990 thru 2007, it is Florida 15, Georgia 3. In that same time period, Florida has TWO National Championships, Georgia has a big fat ZERO! End of Discussion!
Nealchafs 3 years ago
Why are you watching this video then?
SmoothJazz98 3 years ago
Nope, for finally whipping the crap out of UF. Since the teams that couldn't get that done were pretty good, then lookout now. And I really dig their backfield. If they can beat UF then I could see them representing the SEC for a third, consecutive National Title.

Bill Bates was no damn slouch either. One of the hardest hitting dbs in the NFL. A north and south player.
dewlots 3 years ago
One of my favorite players, college or pro, of all time. And, that "My God a Freshman!" is hilarious.
MagnJas 3 years ago
you're an idiot. georgia has been the most consistent team in the SEC east this decade. under CMR, georgia's had 3 BCS appearances, 2 SEC titles, 1 season with less than 10 wins, undefeated out-of-conference schedule. yeah, so mediocre. and to think that georgia didn't beat all 3 rivals in 2007 along with that sugar bowl victory. we're loaded next year.
