NO! black is more efficient absorbing lights, if it were alum foil, it will just reflect the lights back away from the oven. SO what you really want is something shiny to reflect the sunlight into something dark so it can store the sunlight
Nice job, I'm gonna be building one of these this weekend hopefully. One tip: I suggest NOT cooking in plastic bags. Don't want that stuff leeching in your food. Most of those bags release BPA, even the ones that are supposedly "safe" for food use.
I successfully cooked a 3" thick chuck roast using the methods and instructions from this video and it turned out great. I let it sit in there for about 5 hours and I waited for about an hour until the temp got up to speed. Thanks!
(and sorry for my comment earlier. That was just plain mean)
As long as you know it will take a while, it is worth it. I found the times aren't much different than a regular slow cooker or crock pot. Just pray the sun stays out!
I really appreciate your video! Nice to see the time lapse results like that. I have a solar oven on my list of things to accomplish this summer. My Dad made one and mounted it on the base of an old swivel rocker. So he can turn and tilt it to the sun really easily. But I really like your box with the aluminum casing. Thanks again.
Good stuff, glad to see some food actually cooked, how did it taste ?. and was the bag important,to the process and if so, what is it made of, ?. couldn`t be plastic.
The food tasted excellent. We used a regular Reynolds oven bag and we only used it to help with clean-up - they are not necessary. We weren't sure how much splattering there would be and didn't want to trash the oven first time around.
he does have a point, if you want to upload a vid, alot of people will just leave mean comments to vids with umm and ermm and whateva else there is in them :P just dont think about what to say while filming, do it before >:P
I have a "Toyota Camry" solar oven parking in the sun right now, the damn landlord who wouldn't build a garage for me will be the first thing I'm going to cook.
This was, uh, pretty, uh, interesting uh but uh the the tone uh of uh the guy's uh voice uh is, uh uh pretty uh annoying. Uh but uh I'm uh going uh to try uh this uh myself.
Never been to the UK but if you have a 4 hour span with sun, I would think that would work. We have many trees so sometimes we have to move the oven as the sun moves. Thank you for your comment.

Nice oven. I made 1 and bought 2 Glbl Sun Ovens I use all three. The one I made doesn't get as hot...about 220 F tops, so I use it for all day stuff like beans or large baked potatoes or steel cut oats. I use the factory ones for more cloudy days essentially. What I discovered is that the angle of the panels is CRITICAL. Black, covered pots are also very important.
I rinse my dishes in very hot water which I heat up in the sun ovens when I am not otherwise using one, which is almost always.
I think this is very interesting, I wonder if something else besides a plastic bag could be used because I can't always find them. I didn't realize the temperatures went so high. Chicken probably would be safe in this if the parts usd were flattened. Thank you for posting. Well done! (Please excuse the pun!)
ty 4 your video. Great device if I worked in construction I would love to have one of these these. When I worked construction we would go to places that didn't have utilites some days we would go to get dinners and they would run out and we would pay a lot for a meal with one of these take a raw bird/ or 1/4roast to work a canned good and you eating for $4 and can feed a friend. I used a oven one time the meal was so good I ate it all I need to build a good one like this.
ha, i love to make fun of people and make them feel bad, na jk i hate when that happens to me so i dont do it to others but i just had to this time it got to me
Excellent! I'm expecting some nasty economic conditions to arrive within a year or so (possibly even a hyper-inflationary depression) and I've been gathering supplies and equipment to help me weather the storm a bit better. I think I'm going to add a solar cooker to my "must have" list.
And Uh, I say Uhh, a lot in my videos too ( :
It's the content that matters, not the style. I have zero style or charisma but I have some good content.
uh. I went to market to price the bags. . . they are expensive. Every time you cook, you go through a bag--unless you wash it like I do and reuse. Bags are the most expensive thing and it cost more than the propane you would use in a conventional oven.
how hot do you think it gets in there ? really good idea man 5 stars

As much as the oven is functioning, that roast looks like a fail.
heoquayhp 2 years ago
Actually the roast was cooked and tender but the lighting was off making it look pinker than it actually was.

hi, came to me while was studying watching this that is would be better if boxes inside had aluminum foil coating instead of that black thing
