If you watch the Kino release of this with the original score that was orchestrated for Metropolis, certain actions are keyed to the music, such as when Maria turns and points toward the door as she and the children are about to leave. The music punctuates her action, precisely. It does this sort of thing throughout the film, to the point that it's not just acting, but rather a dance. If you haven't seen it with the music, you MUST. It's amazing.
Brigitte Helm is the actress. Her career was very short, due in part that she left Germany in the mid-30's because of Nazi repression to live with her husband in Switzerland, although she was offered roles in Hollywood movies. She rejected Hollywood and never expressed why she retired from movies, because she refused to be interviewed. She appeared in several dozen films in her short film career, but her role as "Maria" in Metropolis is what she is universally known for.
The beginning of this song reminds me of one of Beethoven's pieces of music.

Now that they've found more of the missing footage of Metropolis, are there any plans to add to this rescore?

I'm sorry but this has been bugging me, but I thought Maria looked like a female Gene Wilder.

Gustav Fröhlich (the character Freder) reminds me of Ray Liotta.
