Best era of Camaro and Firefbird styling (well, until they added that grotesque nose and those hideous "channel skirts" to the FB in the early '90s). I'd love to have seen this body style make it to the era of improved interiors!
@ynathan075 They also need to bring back T-tops and the ultra aerodynamic sexy sleek styling of the third and fourth generation Camaros instead of this blocky retro throwback bullshit.
I always wondered why old muscle car commercials often show their cars on a beach. My '89 and '77 Firebirds are deathtraps in snow or hard rain, so driving 'em through sand would be a terrible idea. Posi differentials only go so far.
@DJ4000VOLT im 17 i saved for 1yr 3months to get an iroc i bought a 86IROC there fun cars tons of low end power lights the tires up no problem handle great i got some videos of mine check them out
@3rd4thgenFbody yea i just started savin i found a couple but they were in crappy condition witch didnt bug me cuz i wanna make a project but im under my dads insurance rite now he says insurance rates will go up so imma get a good job so i can pay for the insurance myself
@DJ4000VOLT ya insurence isnt to bad for me but be sure to get a Carb or TPI motor some irocs had the TBI motors there reliable but low powered i did tons of research before i bought my car just dont buy a car because you can buy it because its what your looking for... just some advice
@3rd4thgenFbody yea i want mine all custom i want a chevy v8 big block like a 350 then some flowmasters new interior race seats digital gauges custom racing rims its all gunna be custom
Some history on the IROC-Zs. They were one of the biggest targets for being stolen and stripped. Those were the cars that everyone wanted.
Very few highway patrol division PDs used the Z however, they chose the Mustang GT instead because they fox body platform was able to take more abuse than the F-Body. But the F-Body was faster and handled better.
now that I look back at all them cars with 20/20 I gottta admit they sure were ugly looking ,& primitive today's standards. let's be honest now that we look back let's admit they sure are ugly, so I gotta agree with that other person who posted why did these cars had to be so long with ridiculously long overhangs when the back seat is so small. it just makes these "performance" cars unecessarily heavy. the camaro got better looking during the last 90s . I have a 1997 which is better looking
to speak frankly I like the 2002 model & the present the most alot better, but the new model should of been made better, I hate all the cheap looking molding & plastic interior chevy puts more effort into the vet then they do the camaros.
@xspettacolare well, i didnt really like 4th gens at all, and pretty much everyone i talk to feels the same way. I think the new ones are pretty decent, and ya, of course they put more effort into the corvette
i never understood why these cars had to be so long with ridiculously long overhangs when the back seat is so small. it just makes these "performance" cars unecessarily heavy.
the new camaros have finally gone back to true camaro proportions. the closer the wheels are to the corners, the better it handles.
My step dad has a 87 V8 RS which we are gonna work on soon flush the radiator change oil, buy new tires. Both of us love this car.! All bout camaros, love his 87 but I'd prefure an 68
@rcflight13 this wasnt an ad for the public. This was a in house training film for dealers and salesmen on how to sell the cars to certain types of buyers. The LT and Berlinetta were geared for women, thats why they show the girl coming out of the pool. The IRO Z was geared for young men, hence the soccer guy
I had an 87 Camaro. Ran great the first couple of years and then it started falling apart BIG time. I had to have everything replaced sometimes twice.
I knows that 80s domestic cars were the best cars eva. I mean I watched Gung Ho and I definitely want to go there. How to I go to the 80s? And get a warm, fresh from the heap U.S. quality carz?
Actually when the Iroc-Z 1st came out in 1985 it could only be ordered with a 305ho carb with the manual trans , the tpi 305 tpi could only be had with auto trans. Then in 1987 the 350 tpi could be had, but only with a auto, but the 305tpi could now be had with the manual. Later chevy offered a 350 that could be ordered from the dealer for the earlier Zs. Another common mistake is that externally the 305 and the 350 look the same, so many people mistake it for a 350.
hector the porter at the dealership found this vhs tape behind the zenith breakroom tv and brought it home....LT is sporty model? those TPI's were stump pullers but had lungs like George Burns above 4800 rpm...My built '89 had box intake and cam ran 12's @ 107 NA EFI
the transam is nice too, but i like these camaros cause they look really badass with those headlights :P too bad i live in the UK, its probably not that hard to find muscle cars in reasonable condition in the US
arg thats gay, i wonder why they never built proper muscle cars in europe, here ( in the uk) when you look at classic cars you end up with shitty little things with 1.5L engines, its really boring... on the other hand i have come accross some of these camaros for a somewhat reasonable price, but theyre all automatic
For the most part, all I hear from people overseas in general is that American muscle cars are terrible. I'm sure you've heard of the car program Top Gear. They despise muscle cars, for the most part. I admit they make a few exceptions, like the older dodge charger, dodge challenger, and ford mustang. But thats about it. And actually, just to make you jealous, I'm about a week away from picking up a super clean 1987 5.7 liter IROC Z manual for a great price! :P Only took two years of searching..
yeh i love top gear, and i think the reason why europeens tend to not like muscle cars is that they just arent used to it. When you see what they were making in europe during the muscle car age, you really understand: youve got rovers (vomits) and tiny little two seaters, or on the other side of the scale bentleys and rollers.
I've been all over youtube and jeremy clarkson is a prick. Americans have different likes and tastes than the british and europeans. That's why we don't eat spotted Dick or Snails. I love american cars and does anyone agree with me that these are the most futuristic looking camaros. The 90s ones were too jellybean like and the new ones are too retro.
I hear ya. Back in the 80's chevy was clearly was trying to go a step forward with the styling of these cars. Just look at the Delorean. Clearly, european influence came into the F body's design with the more rounded corners. Personally, I didn't think they necessarlly looked bad though, just different.
Wanna know what bothers me? The fact that the GTO, Challanger, and new Camaro have an independent rear suspension! I dont care if they corner better! Give me a solid live axel anyday!
That's a stupid analogy! So your saying that anyone that drives 60's and 70's muscle cars are driving "utter crap"! I would stay away from the Woodward Cruise in Detroit if I were you. You're liable to get hurt around those guys with that kind of lip.
Yeah, I'll drive a BMW, go around a corner faster than you, get to where I was going faster than you, save more fuel, have more power, and be all around technically better than you.
Let me tell you something, dude. I drive a '96 impala ss. I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT CORNERING!!! People need cornering ability to get out of MY way! On that same note, most on the interstate highways in the US run east to west relatively straight. I don't live in the damn Swiss Alps where I would need to worry about flying off a cliff if I can't take a sharp turn.
Well, some people would disagree with you on that subject. Some guys will swear to a live axel in quarter mile runs because of it's rigid design and lighter weight . Me personally, I don't really race and I'm not really sure if one setup has an advantage over the other in a straight line scenario. But I do know this: live axels have a more rigid, stronger design and can handle much more abuse that 2 CV joints. So, calling live axels "utter crap" is a very narrow-minded comment.
Traditional full size cars cars need them. Caprice, Roadmaster, Town car, Marauder, Fleetwood. These vehicles weigh over 2 tons. That a huge amount of pressure to put on a set of little CV joints and then combine that with shitty, pothole filled American roads. These cars are used for police and taxies all the time. A caprice and crown vic interceptor need to be able to persue and sometimes be able to ram another car. No one would trust an IRS to that kind of punishment.
Again, I agree with you in terms of ride quality. I'm saying that a rougher terrain takes a bigger toll on an IRS in time than a solid axel.
My impala weighs 4200 lbs empty. I'm not aware of any car that is as big or weighs as much and has an IRS. But if it exists, it would be very costly and most people wouldn't be able to afford it. Plus it would never be used as an interceptor or taxi.
I perfer tradition to comfort. IRS will ultimately just drive up the cost of the vehicle.
And yes I know that the caprice is no longer made. And half shaves do break sometimes, and when they do it's very expensive to repair.
I understand what your saying about IRS creating a more comfortable ride and better cornering. All i'm saying is that american muscle cars were never supposed to be about that. That's why it bothers me to see the new challanger with a rear end like a european car. I want the jarring solid beam like the old days! If I wanted a BMW, I'd by one.
Oh, and on another note, these super high performance BMW's and Mercedes's your refering to are in a class of their own. Most people would never be able to afford them. This is about american performance, which is supposed to be affordable. That's why Ford still makes the Mustang with a solid rear end and that is one of the best selling American sports cars. Because people can actually attain it!
an i.r.s setup sucks for straight line.....thats why drag racers convert vettes to a different rear.way too much loss of power as well.irs systems were designed for handling/high speed corners.
My car isall stock and it gets about 26 mpg. That's not so bad! I can't really argue about technology because my car is kind of old, but what's so bad about that? A '70 chevelle ss is old and that's a badass car.
Speed? Speed is relative. If all I cared about is speed, I'd buy a crotch rocket. I'm faster that the majority of cars you see on the road today. An M3 may be faster than me but i'd go through it like wet toilet paper if I ever hit one!
In europe people looked for the handling capabilities and not so much massive torque and bhp, they used pretty much the smallest engines to keep the weight down so the handling would be good. But i think that nowadays its completely irrelevant because the only bit of exitement your going to get it when you hit the gas at the traffic lights, so to hell with the handling! :P
haha yea thats pretty much what we've been saying over here since the car started life. but we've never had the twisting, winding roads like you have over there. its always been about lining up at the traffic light and seeing who can get to the next one the fastest.
actually, the 350 came standard wtih a manual transmission by '86 or '87. I dont remember which one. The FIRST year of the IROC 350 was automatic only. But by the second year, it was coming with a manual, and auto as the option.
Chevrolet never offered the 5.7 TPI engines with the T-5 manual trans. Simply put, they could barely handle the 5.0 engines....hard to believe the Mustang and F-twins had the same trans, but the Ford had MUCH stronger internals. They toyed around with a 6-speed towards the end of the 3rd-gen's run, but debuted the 6-gear in the 4th gen in '93.
I wanted to find myself a nice 3rd gen... everything near me was junked up, or rediculously overpriced (a $4k car trying to be sold for $16k)... i ended up with a 4th gen trans am... decent, but no iroc :(
Yeah, I remember them too, they were the first DVD's!, my bible study conductor used to have an entire laser disc home theater system and that shit was tight!, they were big as a pizza and you had to flip them over to watch the other side of the movie.
Beautiful car,I just love it!!!.I remember the first ones that have the V6 2.8 engine,it delivers 130 hp and 160 lb of torque, excellent power and good gas economy.Wonderful american muscle car.
The guy keeps saying "sportiness" like 80 times when talking about the non-Z28 models. WTF? Just say they're not as fast, and have a little more "luxury." If you want a sports/performance car just get the Z28, jeez.
I love my '87 5.7L Tune port!...<3 i just traded a 3000gt for it....i've wanted one of these cars since i was 16. first car was a 1976 Camaro LT which i built alittle but still wasnt a 3rd gen by anymeans, handled like a boat......then the 3kgt, and now the love of my life:)

Hold on a second here.
Let me reiterate my point.
I have nothing against old cars, or anything to do with them.
It's just LOVING something that's outdated.
A live axle will not yield better results even in a straight line than a independent setup.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
Well, some people would disagree with you on that subject. Some guys will swear to a live axel in quarter mile runs because of it's rigid design and lighter weight . jons44 2 years ago
Live Axles are stronger, yes.
So put them on trucks.
Not cars.
As far as cars go, BMW's have 500-600hp and don't destroy their rear ends with even the most rigorous driving.
Mercedes makes car with upwards of 700 lb-ft of torque, and their rear ends don't fall to pieces...
But yes, I do see what you're saying. Due to it all being contained within' a metal casing, it does become... stronger.
But who really needs that in a car?
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
Traditional full size cars cars need them. Caprice, Roadmaster, Town car, Marauder, Fleetwood. These vehicles weigh over 2 tons. That a huge amount of pressure to put on a set of little CV joints and then combine that with shitty, pothole filled American roads. These cars are used for police and taxies all the time. jons44 2 years ago
But it's been in use with almost every newer vehicle here, and it's stood up to all that.
There are cars that weigh just as much and hold up just as well with IRS.
And that's the beauty of an IRS setup! It works out better for the car and for the occupants when it comes to pot holes and whathaveyou.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
Again, I agree with you in terms of ride quality. I'm saying that a rougher terrain takes a bigger toll on an IRS in time than a solid axel.

I understand what your saying about IRS creating a more comfortable ride and better cornering. All i'm saying is that american muscle cars were never supposed to be about that. That's why it bothers me to see the new challanger with a rear end like a european car. I want the jarring solid beam like the old days! If I wanted a BMW, I'd by one.
jons44 2 years ago
Oh, and on another note, these super high performance BMW's and Mercedes's your refering to are in a class of their own. Most people would never be able to afford them. This is about american performance, which is supposed to be affordable. That's why Ford still makes the Mustang with a solid rear end and that is one of the best selling American sports cars. Because people can actually attain it!
jons44 2 years ago
I see more exotic cars in a day then I do Mustangs.
I do see quite a few Mustangs, though.
A lot of the 5.0's from the 80's that've been modded to shit.
I will comment later with my counter-argument. I'm tired right now. :P
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
an i.r.s setup sucks for straight line.....thats why drag racers convert vettes to a different rear.way too much loss of power as well.irs systems were designed for handling/high speed corners.
churchofruss 2 years ago
That doesn't count. They also use nitrous oxide and alcohol injection and turbo setups pushing 30 psi.
We're talking factory, here!
Not to mention, there are a ton of really fast IRS dragsters pulling lower 10's.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
My car isall stock and it gets about 26 mpg. That's not so bad! I can't really argue about technology because my car is kind of old, but what's so bad about that? A '70 chevelle ss is old and that's a badass car.
Speed? Speed is relative. If all I cared about is speed, I'd buy a crotch rocket. I'm faster that the majority of cars you see on the road today. An M3 may be faster than me but i'd go through it like wet toilet paper if I ever hit one!
And I spent a lot less money.

80's Muscle looked the same.
Firebird, Camaro, Trans Am.
Hell, even the 300ZX had the same basic body styling.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
um no what are you looking at? How does a firebird look like a camaro or how does a mustang look like a camaro they are all the same typ of car?
Lumotaku 2 years ago
They do.
They all have the same kind of shape.
2 door, 2 seater, huge front end, sitting on the rear axle, T-top, hood scoop, body decals, rear low profile spoiler, hatch style trunk, blah blah blah.
Basically the same.
QuantumCarl 2 years ago
In europe people looked for the handling capabilities and not so much massive torque and bhp, they used pretty much the smallest engines to keep the weight down so the handling would be good. But i think that nowadays its completely irrelevant because the only bit of exitement your going to get it when you hit the gas at the traffic lights, so to hell with the handling! :P
dagrollin 3 years ago
haha yea thats pretty much what we've been saying over here since the car started life. but we've never had the twisting, winding roads like you have over there. its always been about lining up at the traffic light and seeing who can get to the next one the fastest.
Reuffeo 3 years ago
they never built a 350 with a 5 speed trans it cant handel the power so they got the automatic 700r4 trans
goddaor 2 years ago
actually, the 350 came standard wtih a manual transmission by '86 or '87. I dont remember which one. The FIRST year of the IROC 350 was automatic only. But by the second year, it was coming with a manual, and auto as the option.
Reuffeo 2 years ago
Chevrolet never offered the 5.7 TPI engines with the T-5 manual trans. Simply put, they could barely handle the 5.0 engines....hard to believe the Mustang and F-twins had the same trans, but the Ford had MUCH stronger internals. They toyed around with a 6-speed towards the end of the 3rd-gen's run, but debuted the 6-gear in the 4th gen in '93.
bowslap 2 years ago
how is the 305 "the proven engine" the 5.7L 350 had been around longer than it.
DamnStraightM35A2 3 years ago
the 305 smallblock is basically the exact same engine as the 5.7/350, just lower displacement.

Yeah, I remember them too, they were the first DVD's!, my bible study conductor used to have an entire laser disc home theater system and that shit was tight!, they were big as a pizza and you had to flip them over to watch the other side of the movie.

My uncle had 1988 Iroc Z, it was a bad ass ride and my dad had 1978 6.6litre Trans Am. I love those old school rides.

The guy keeps saying "sportiness" like 80 times when talking about the non-Z28 models. WTF? Just say they're not as fast, and have a little more "luxury." If you want a sports/performance car just get the Z28, jeez.
