  • Lol this song describes my entire week.

  • I woke up this morning with this song in my head. Thank you for posting and brightening my day!

  • Fuckin cool

  • A real believer in true love. But I still love his music.

  • I like the music of Tom Lehrer, but in this video it was particularly funny watching it with the option of audio transcription (I know it's an experimental feature, but that's what made it funny :P).

During the song the transcription only made 3 almost acurate quotes of the actual lyrics, the remaining of the song came up with funny and nonsensical phrases like "My soldiers saw a handyman" (instead of "I told you so in May" XD).

  • cute

  • So bittersweet and beautiful.

  • Husk at øve - når den ene part ikke kan/vil mere - enten alene eller i byen, det kan være en befrielse for den anden

  • I sat at the edge of my seat for the whole middle section of "ITY-s" in this video just for him to utter the word, "VIRGINITY" XD haha

  • Rhyming C-c-c-combo Breaker.

  • lighten up folks it's just social satire and the guys funny!

  • my dream is to shake this wonderful mans hand, however thats probably never going to happen

  • @BirthOfSerpents, no, it isn´t. True, Tom Lehrer is a very funny and kind and polite man. But -- already in the mid 60´s -- he decided that he wasn´t going to continue as a comedian-songwriter-performer. Find the YouTube video "Tom Lehrer talks" and you will get it. Thank you so much for watching :-))

  • @6funswede well a man can dream cant he

  • @BirthOfSerpents, sure he can. Nobody´s perfect (as Lehrer could have said :-) Thanks for watching the old black and white recording :-)))

  • I think we are watching a genius, a small genius, but neverthless a genius.

  • @kevinastraw How can genius be small ?

  • @DesperateTry Scope.

  • Tom Lehrer = Einstein of music.

  • We laugh because we know it is and it isn't true. What a brilliant fellow Lehrer was! I love the silent movie piano pastiche he plays when he envisages old age.

  • Tom Lehrer was the Bo Burnham of the 50's and 60's.

  • @JustinTimePro the who now?

  • @TheRachaelLefler A comedic pianist who talks about controversial issues and "crosses the line" at some points, while still being hilarious. His music's not for the faint of heart, but he's still hilarious.

  • @JustinTimePro - When you consider the political climate of the time when he was writing and performing these songs, he was really sticking his neck out. If the McCarthy bunch had decided he was "dangerously subversive", he would have been hauled up in front of the HUAC, and could have been blacklisted from working as a professor. This gives an ominous tone to his humourous liner note about being prepared to swear he had nothing to do with any of his songs.

  • @JustinTimePro - When you consider that he was doing these songs during the McCarthy era, you realize that he was really sticking his neck out. If anyone in power had decided he was a "dangerous subversive", he'd have been hauled up in front of the HUAC. It could have resulted in his being blacklisted, and prevented from working as a professor.

This adds an ominous tone to his humourous comment about being prepared to swear he had nothing to do with any of his songs.

  • I'm so going to buy this. ^-^

  • Someone in the comments said: "way ahead of his time, and I very rarely say that", and then went on to say it four times in the following sentence, lol. Anyway, where has all the original talent gone? Like Satchmo-original.

  • gutes video hab heute n einsamkeits anfall

  • Way ahead of his time, and I very rarely say that. Frank Zappa was way ahead of his time, Throbbing Gristle, way ahead of their time, Charlie Parker, way ahead of his time, Tom Lehrer, way ahead of his time

  • loved the way he flitted around virginity there lol

  • I use this pick up line all the time.

  • amazing... remembered from childhood! But so resonant today. Thank you, thank you, funswede!!!!

  • @reallyharried, thank you, but you should thank Tom Lehrer for this. I would not have survived on YouTube if it was not for him. And you know what to give to your friends or enemies for Christmas, don´t you? Yes, The Tom Lehrer Collection (CD/DVD, 2010). Read the video description :-)

  • this is the best song ever! finally a good love song

  • if i get married, i want to play this at the wedding.

  • Sir or Madam 6funswede:

Is it possible, infering from your name, that you infact are Swedish?

  • @Cdromultraspeed, no. I´ll tell you the truth: when I posted the video recorded Lehrer songs on this dubious channel in 2007 I pretended to be from Sweden because these were recordings never seen by anybody (and, at that time, not commercially available). But, thank God, that changed with the 2010 release of The Tom Lehrer Collection. I´m from Norway :-)

  • @6funswede It has all been sweeded

    (Be Kind Rewind)

  • @6funswede Norway? I always thought you came from a park nearby.

  • Funny but true!

  • well gee,

looks like I have a new old guy to wish I had met about so and so years ago...

    before I was born...

sigh why did they all have to grow old?

  • I wonder if this happened and caused him to ACT upon what he said in I Hold Your Hand in Mine.

  • I wonder if Tom, 82, has reached senility and has a loss of mobility combined with an awful debility and lessened utility, and there's a strong possibilty that he's lost his virility and his wife her fertility and desirrrrrrability, and in all probability they didn't act with agility so they've lost the ability and also facility, and then this liability of toal sterility will lead to not only hostility but a big sense of futility... Thumbs up if you agree :)

  • @mabarry3, he he :-)

  • @mabarry3

LOL. Is he even married? xD

  • @rainbowheydrich, no, as a matter of fact, he isn`t. Also: thank you for posting a comment on the channel page. That was nice of you, but the man to thank here is Tom Lehrer himself. These videos would not be available on the "wisdom channel" without his generosity :-)

  • @6funswede

Indeed. Tom Lehrer is amazing. -nods-

Thank you, Tom Lehrer, wherever you are. I wish there was a way to contact him, but then imagine all the fanmail he'd get. He did always like his privacy. Oh well.

  • @rainbowheydrich, yes, Lehrer does not want any fan mail or any attention for that matter. Click on "6funswede" and then play back the "Tom Lehrer talks" video, and you´ll get it. On the other hand, he is fine with the fact that a lot of people enjoy his video recorded 1967 performance on YouTube and he appreciates people who enjoy his comedy songs and buy his albums or mp3´s.

  • @6funswede

Yes, I've seen it, thanks for uploading. =)

  • @6funswede WHAT???? HE ISN'T MARRIED? So... He said this to another man's wife, then killed her in I Hold Your Hand In Mine? ;D

  • @mabarry3 Thumbs UP!

  • @mabarry3 What a pointless comment.

  • @mabarry3, ha ha, I still enjoy this comment, although "no" is the right answer. Lehrer, able to predict the worst, from (increased) pollution to "the rise of China" (in "Wernher von Braun), missed that one. I believe he is mobile, not senile and he has no "lessened utility" and he certainly has ability. I don´t know about virility, though. Maybe he got that one right :-)

  • @6funswede I'm glad you still enjoy the comment, although since then I've learned he doesn't even have a wife. What would he need that virility for anyway?

  • @mabarry3, in my (foreign Scandinavian) world, virility is not just about sex, relationships, flatulence and genitalia, it is also about a loud "YES" to life :-)

  • @6funswede

Virility derives from the Latin 'vir' which means 'man'. Therefore, virility is 'manliness', though usually meant in the sexual manner (as in, ability to reproduce, being attractive).

Mind you, loving life is quite manly. :D

  • @mabarry3 Well, virility is nice even if one doesn't have a wife - there are lots of women out there ... I bet an evening with Tom Lehrer wouldn't be wasted!

  • WOW... 16 -ility words (probability, ability, mobility, etc)

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • this song would make a great valentines day singing card.

  • @clarese76, good idea!

  • @clarese76 i agree too, lol

  • I've been a fan of Tom Lehrer for many many years. I have all of his albums but it is really nice that I've found him here on youtube. Now I can share him with my friends who don't know him.

  • @mochaman15, thank you! I sincerely ask you to click on my (stupid) username "6funswede" and visit the channel. Please read the WHOLE channel (profile) description and find the "everything you need to know" - link. Share the links with your friends and enemies. The channel of "6funswede" is Tom Lehrer only, with 12 videorecorded songs and a lot of interesting stuff.

  • @6funswede I don't think it's such a stupid name. Well, not any stupider than many of the other names. hehehe I'll go to your channel and browse. Thank you again.

  • @mochaman15, thanks! I appreciate anyone who bothers to check out the channel (profile) description and/or the video descriptions for each video clip :-)

  • all to true!

  • hahaha I love this song.. is it wrong that I think he's hot?

  • @msharvell Not at all! :D

  • I thinks he must have spent weeks reading the thesaurus for each of his songs

  • how romantic

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Amazing, amazing, amazing. He's a truly talented man.

  • It feels a bit weird leaving this comment for this particular song, but...HAPPY 82nd BIRTHDAY TOM LEHRER!!!

  • If I ever were to get married, I'd play this song, if I remember

  • to the person who wondered if anyone played this at their wedding , I know someone who did at that , very fun , by the end the whole crowd was laughing since they used it for their first dance!

  • Mm, I wonder if anyone has ever played this song at their wedding... I'd go to that wedding! :D

  • @OtakuEmma At my wedding, I had them play "When I'm 64"

  • awesome :)

  • Tom Lehrer is the best

  • I love Tom Lehrer.

  • Actually the message is simple: It's a comic take on how people drive each other crazy being married for a long time. Even the most loving newlyweds will bicker about the tiniest things 20 years down the road. A lot of Tom Lehrer's songs have a simple message, nothing hidden beneath the exterior (although there are a few exceptions), but when you're looking for humor, you're not looking for a deep, profound, message anyway, you're looking to laugh. And this certainly succeeds at that.

  • Besides, you being old and gray, it's not saying much for you, is it? ;)

  • That's just perverting the song; I don't think he's saying we should all have blonde models at the age of 55, merely that one should grasp youth whilst one still has it. :D

  • this dude is an ABSOLUTE GENIOUS when it comes to writing lyrics, i must say!!!

  • All the 'ilities' range from 0:36-1:11 in case you wanted to know...

  • Truly the greatest!

  • rofl sense of hummer

  • Good luck for the two of you. My love is 21 years my senior and decided for no.

  • The way he says "ability" is fantastically naughty...

  • PeaceOutU07, it really is!

  • I never knew there were so many words ending in -ility! Great song :)

  • I saw this guy on stage in Birmingham back in 1963. He was a total one-man revolution and sooooo irreverent then. Bless him.

  • how do i post this clip onto my facebook page?

  • Press the Facebook button under the Share tab under the video

  • All the twelve Tom Lehrer songs from this channel have now been republished in better quality. Click the Lehrer icon or the username, go to the channel and select one of the uploaded HQ-versions :-) Don't forget to click the HQ-buttion.

  • Epic 16 line rhyme combo!

  • You've got to wonder why more people don't use this as their wedding song.

  • My dad sang it to my mom at their 55th wedding anniversary shindig last year. It was the hit of the evening! :) (He was asked numerous times over the years to sing it at wedding receptions. Great stuff!)

  • I've loved Tom Lehrer since I was at the tender and very impressionable age of 14 - 20 years later and I still get all squishy when I hear the masterful Mr. Lehrer's voice. It doesn't matter that he's a year younger than my dad - he'll always own real estate in my heart!

  • How come he never got married?

  • tom and mark ?

  • Thank you! My (vinyl) albums are safe again--- I don't have to torturethem to hear this lovely voice---- he was in the armed forces with my uncle -----

  • Is it weird that I think young Tom Lehrer is hot?

  • normanthepig, no, it's not. It shows that you too are head of your time. In the conservative 50/60's America there was no real place for Tom Lehrer. But the truth is - I am speaking as an informed journalist here - that Tom Lehrer is and was one of the worlds greatest musical satirists...EVER. Spread the word, and may more people click on the Lehrer icon and enjoy this channel.

  • i was thinking the exact same thing

  • Hes Handsome, such a great singer!

  • I count Tom Leherer as one of my celebrity crushes (which is a very exclusive club) and I'm seventeen, so you know... ;) I think he had one of the most amazingly demented grins, and definitely was a very handsome man.

  • Taintie, oh, thank you so much! Look, I'll give your comment five * * * * * :-) Click on my username if you want to watch all the twelve songs from that forgotten and RARE Ampex video tape :-)

  • I'm eighteen and I also have an exclusive celebrity crush club consisting mainly of actresses of the 1940s. My girlfriend doesn't mind... all of her competition has died of natural causes :P

  • i totally do too.

  • From the publisher: Is it true than some YouTube videos deteriorate over time? When this video was tested recently it had a stuttering playback. Please add the code &fmt=18 to the url if this happens to you (and read the video descirption). Thanks!

  • 6funswede, can you post a link to get to tom lehrer explaining why he does not perform anymore please?

  • askice77, this is just a matter of visiting the channel's front page (click the user name or the Lehrer icon) and then use the link "Lehrer hosting on radio (1998)". Or use the website link and then the supporting links page. It's all there.

  • Why doesn't he still perform? I know some of his songs by heart. I'd be singing these songs out loud from the rooftops if I could carry a tune. Thanks for the video.

I may be the only fan of Tom Lehrer in Sri Lanka...

  • nirmalsuki, thank you for your comment. Click on the Lehrer icon or the username to visit the channel's front page. Then you can hear Lehrer on radio explaining why he stopped performing :-)

  • Holy cow!!!!!! Thank you thank you thank you for giving us the opportunity to see Tom Lehrer in live performance. I started getting his albums years ago. His live performances have much more sweetness, much less acerbity, then the audio performances alone. He was an amazing performer.

  • leopoldmozart, thank you for your comment. I hope Lehrer reads it, and I would pass your kind message to him. True, I put out these rarities, but they stay on YouTube because of Tom Lehrer :-)

  • Should play this at engagement parties on loop.

  • freakymarie, he he, five stars! Good idea, although if I was you I'd play the newer version of this song on the channel, and listen very closely to Lehrer's spoken outro :-)

  • this should be played at Valentine's Day dances...lol

  • freethinker1990, he he, five stars to you too!

  • There was a musician named Tom

Who sang satires with graceful aplomb.

His lament about fair/Girls becoming gray-haired

Only partly applies to your mom.

  • Oh, thank you thank you! I hope Lehrer reads that one :-)

  • what i love about lehrer is that you can listen to the lyrics and there soo funney as opposed to the current people (who i still listen to and aprecieate) oftern the lyrics are nowhere neer as good or humerous as lehrer's :)

  • Having just come across his 1st 10" vinyl I've had the joy of discovery songs I don't remember hearing before. This is one of the gems from that early 50's release. Thanks for preserving a great performance by a brilliant songwriter and satirist. If only the current batch had half Lehrer's skill, humour and cutting edge.

  • joyballterry, I really appreciated your comment! But Tom Lehrer is the one who should be thanked. It's because of him that these twelve songs are still on YouTube, not because of me. As for the rest of your comment: I agree with you :-)

  • I don't think the mic picked up the crowd. Either that, or they're laughing on the inside...

  • bwworld, thank you for your comment. The mic didn't pick up the crowd. This was 1967, and they used one mic for the piano and one for Lehrer's vocals :-)

  • hahaaha

how arent these people laughing hysterically

  • I know, this room has a cold crowd!

  • he he I'm laughing my a.. off :-)

  • Lol good upload... And Tom, if you want I'll kill her for you!

  • This song reminds me of my parents. (Except that they didn't love each other in the beginning.)

  • 0:59 hahaha - Would be awesome if he would be my math teacher

  • Strange! I just watched this video. When I went back to it a couple of minutes later to show to someone, it said "We're sorry; this video is no longer available." ???

  • tubesterini, thank you for your comment. The video IS still here, so it must be a YouTube screw-up. Please visit the channel's front page and try out the featured video on top of that page. It includes another version of the same song.

  • tTHANK YOU FOR POSTING THESE!

  • There's only one Tom L..thanx Tom

  • One of the funniest Tom Lehrer songs xD

  • Thank you for all the work you did to get these wonderful videos on YouTube - and of course, deepest gratitude to Tom Lehrer for allowing us all to enjoy! I was introduced to his music and wit when I was a young teenager and I believe I remember the lyrics from every album word for word. What a joy to introduce his work to my own teens now! Lehrer's work is still relevant and his wit and music talent do not dilute his powerful messages.

  • Oh, lisachernow, thank you so much for that comment. I feel the same gratitude towards Tom Lehrer as you do. And as you may know, the German word for teacher is indeed "Lehrer". By introducing Tom Lehrer to your teens (children) you will educate them well. Let them hear all the twelve songs on the channel.

  • Anyone know where I can find a printable version of his musical notes?

  • Yes. on Amazon there's a note book called "Too Many Songs by Tom Lehrer". It's not too expensive, and pirating notesheet isn't allowed :).

  • Does anyone know Tom Lehrer's marital status in real life?

  • scientist

  • lol

  • He's so funny. But what I'm most struck by is his clever lyrics. He's really very smart and creative.

  • Let us not forget the notes, which he also wrote alone.

    He's a genius.

  • Always loved this song. Lehrer is great.

The tune (melody) is supposed to be 'rubbish'- as much a parody as the lyrics themselves.

  • this is the best old song ever!

  • Most of you are apparently unaware that he was making fun of a particular song that was popular earlier in the 20th century: "Will You Love Me in December as You Do in May?". It spawned imitators on the same theme.

Some of you also seem to have some idea that there is some bizarre political content to the song. There isn't. It's just a send-up of a particular sub-genre of song.

  • this guy is amazing!!

  • wow. He doesn't bullshit around..

  • Fantastic song by an impressive musician! Congratulations, great master, on national TL day.

Now if only someone would post 'in old Mexico'! ^^ It's a masterpiece.

  • Brilliant!

  • this is from a time when the U.S. wsa still a great nation

  • Some of his other songs in this performance suggest otherwise.

  • That's "grammar" - not "grammer" :-P

  • LO freakin' L! pooflo got smoked!

  • Haha silly american

  • gratz... on not being able to tell trolls when you see them.

    gratz.

  • Tom Lehrer is a true comic genius and a major inspiration to us comedic wannabes. If there were a funny song sinnger's hall of fame, Tom Lehrer, Alan Sherman, Ray Stevens, Weird Al and spike jones would be in it. More from the mad professor please!

  • And from what I've just read, there's one more exception - you :P

  • old and gray XDXDXDXDXDXXDDXDXDXDXDXDX hehehehehheheehe i act a n00b !1!1111!

  • GENIUS

  • 8D

    I LOVE it!

  • he is like the olden day weird al XD

  • HES OLD AND GREY NOW TOO!!! =P proabably still awsome tho lol
