How can i clean my brush when i donot have conditioner or glycerin?! Can i use some hair shampoo instead or is that a bad idea? Because i think when i go to the store to buy me some glycerin + conditioner it ends up that i've just spend more money on that as on my starter badger-brush which only consts about 15 euros (~ 21dollar)
I notice that you store/hang your DE razor with the blade end down. I've been storing mine with the blade end up. Is there any good reason to do it one way or the other?
Thx. for all your vids! You got me started on wet shaving.
Thanks for this and all the other great videos. I recently got back into 'proper' wet shaving after a 20-year break and I am so glad I did. I look forward to a shave now.
Best regards from England - and keep up the good work.
Lately, I find that the hairs in the CH3 is giving off a very bad smell. I have tried to thoroughly wash it and soak it with hair shampoo and washing conditioner, but i couldn't get rid of the smell.
I suspect the brush is too dense and i couldn't dry it completely.
I have 3 brushes used on a daily basis with rotation. Savile Row 3330 and Shavemac D01. These 2 brushes don't have this problem...
Thank you good sir for this and your other videos im beginning on my road of old time shaving. They are a big help with the basics of shaving, and maintaining of both the razor and brush. i hope to become a happy shaver! :-)
I had a question on razor maintenance. I had my firs DE razor shave today, EJ-89. I was wondering how to maintain the razor. Do you take the blade out every time? Can you reuse them a few times, like cartridges? Also, if I leave it in the razor will it rust? Also, how often do you clean the actual razor, (toothbrush, vinegar, etc); any tips would be appreciated?
some manufacturers recommned drying the brush upside down. Does this need to be treated as gosple, or can you dry your brush with it standing up if you don't have a brush stand?
Drying the brush bristles down is the commonly recommended method by most mfgrs.
In my opinion, I agree, for the simple fact that gravity is on your side as far as allowing the water to flow down and out from the bristles on the brush.
That being said, you might not have enough hangers to store your wet brushes in a "bristles down" position.
No harm, no foul! It's fine to store your brush on its base with the bristles up as well.
thanks alot my wife said i didnt need to bother you because she had and used it for her make up. Love your videos and wet shaving has changed my life! thanks for everything!
I noticed the Tweezerman in the background. That is the one and only brush that a currently own. Do you happen to know what kind of badger hair it has (best, pure, etc...)?
I gotta tell you, that Tweezerman is a Great little brush for the money, under $20...
It comes with a lifetime Mfgr's warrantee!!!
Review: The brush is made in Korea of 100% badger hair (doesn't say which type) the preferred bristle for softness and for creating a rich lather. The brush head is densely packed, and the base is made of wood. The bristle is quite soft and comfortable. The base is basic, but nicely shaped, and polished.
I loved your demonstration and am anxious to employ your suggestions. I was wondering, however, what brand of conditioner and glycerine you were using to clean your brush.
Thanks for taking the time to teach us all how to care for our shaving equipment.
The Glycerine is called "NOW". It is 100% Natural Glycerine and I think it came from Whole Foods... The conditioner is something we had in the drawer and it's long gone, so I don't know the exact brand. I think it might have been by Loreal or some other ladies brand. Any decent hair conditioner will do the trick since badger hair is really just hair after all...
Hah! Great timing -- just this week one of my brushes became a little stiff and I was wondering what to do about it. Another great vid, Geo! Thanks much!
I agree, shampoo will work very well also... Considering that badger is actually natural hair, somewhat similar to the hair that grows on our heads that, yes, we use shampoo to clean.
I'm sure that the shampoo will work fine on a brush that hasn't got a lot of residue.
For brushes that have a substantial amount of shaving cream or soap buildup, I would definitely go with an oxy based dish soap or Borax or something similar.
what kind of conditioner was that and why the glycerin , i have also heard borox is good , what are your thoughts , thanks

Your whiskers are..... Hair.
Any conditioner that softens and hydrates them will assist in shaving.

Maintaining your brush is not that difficult....
A good cleaning and conditioning every few weeks will keep it looking and performing as new.
Take care of your tools and they'll take care of you!

Badger hair is natural hair which is similar to your own hair....
Most likely anything that works up top will be fine on your brush as well.
You want to remove any residue so that it becomes flexible again.

I store my razors both ways... It just so happens that in this video, I have it with the blade down.
Post shave, I remove the blade and dry the blade compartment as to avoid rust, water spots, or pitting.
So, for me, it really doesn't matter how it hangs in the stand.
One thing to keep in mind is that it is more secure in most stands when the blade compartment is up.
Take care,
Geo.

All that cleaning and been worry about bacteria/germs is umm, not a manly thing, KISS = Keep It Simple Silly.....

@912alldaylong
When the residue builds up on the brush it becomes rigid and no longer performs as it did when it was new.
The cleaning and conditioning is to restore it to its original condition...

weakpig 8 months ago
@weakpig
Try soaking and washing it in a mild solution of Borax and water.
Should help alleviate the odor.
Try rubbing the bristles on a thick towel after you've rinsed it thoroughly.
Hang it bristles down to dry.

Lol,
That's simple!
Snatch it from your wife's or girlfriend's drawer!
Just make sure you return it before she discovers what you did,,, Lol.
Any decent hair softening conditioner will get the job done for you.

do you dry your brush with a towel after every shave too?
nico27004 1 year ago
@nico27004
Gently brush and roll the tips around on a towel to remove the majority of moisture...
Fluff it up a bit and place it in the holder, bristles down to dry.
Best,

sorry for bothering you so much but what is that stuff in the bottle after u use the soap. i cant find it. could i use just soap and conditioner?
nico27004 1 year ago
@nico27004
That's natural glycerin, and sure you could go without it...
Wash and swirl the brush with soap, apply the conditioner, let that sit for a minute or so, and rinse out.
It's all good!

what kind of conditioner do you use. its not like hair conditioner you use one your head hahaha?
nico27004 1 year ago
@nico27004 Good luck,
Yes, actually.
Regular hair conditioner is fine. If it is labeled on the bottle, softening is better than strengthening.
Ahhhh, your brush will thank you!

Nothing worse than a stiff brush! lol!
A couple of alternatives discussed:
A) Shampoo instead of the oxy dish soap
B) If you don't have the glycerine, skip it and go right to the hair conditioner. Best Regards
