@polarbeach - You're 36 years old and posting stupid, rude remarks like that? You should feel proud of yourself. Go somewhere else and make rude remarks..not here..
HOW FUN!!! Love your creativeness! This is great vid, but I had a very hard time hearing it. Have you ever tried using pebbles, dried beans, or grains of rice inside the can or do you think they would stick/clump together too much? We could have the parents who play tennis save their tennis ball containers and use too. Can't wait to try it~I am going to pass it along to my friend that leads a brownie troup that is a bit younger than the girls in mine. Keep up the good work! :)
Art or Craft, who really cares. This girl is using her imagination and trying to teach children the same. Being able to "craft" using available resources is an art itself. Definetely thinking outside of the lines here.
Thank you for your comment. As adults we can get caught up in too many rules of life. The idea is to just relax and have fun with your children. Art or Craft, whatever you want to call it is not a big deal. Children just want to have fun with materials and create their own masterpices. The idea is to be creative and have fun. Let's not be too serious is ALL things in life. Just relax and have fun.
Thanks you for your comment. Yes we approach all of our activities the same way. We have all sorts of questions, how to ask, what to ask, open ended questions and so much more on our website and in our e books. Thanks again and feel free to check out our site.
Also, I am glad that you refer to the above as a series of scientific discoveries. Few people understand that the artist process mirrors the scientific process in ideas, theories, research of other works in a media, testing theories, experiments and overall art movements.
As a recent graduate of a school of art I will add that this project teaches the beauty of the moment, randomness, and most important for children imperfection. Children are taught to stay in the lines. That is not teaching artistic thinking. That is only teaching muscle memory. Such also conditions children into believing they are inept at anything artist which is half of the human brain. Thus activities the do not require a previous design are most suitable for children's development.
Hello i am currently taking ECE, and i was looking for ART activities when i came across your video. I simply wanted to tell you that your activity is a craft and not a art activity. I dont mean to sound rude, because it truly is a good craft.
When we're talking about pre-schoolers, there is no difference between ART and CRAFT. Don't be a snob! This is a great art-experiential for the age group.
There is a thin line. Craft stores vs Art stores often have much of the same materials. What is different is the use of clip art, stock art, stickers, stamps and templates. Fine gallery artist often use other people's work, but in a new context. kind of like "paint by numbers" vs designing one's own work. How much is the activity about following directions vs. individually working with materials, yet many artists stick to a format.
no offense, but there is a huge difference between art and craft. Art is open-ended with the focus on process over product. Whereas a craft is more product driven. Not that it is bad. This is a good, scientific activity. But it is not art.
myspotsrock is right... there is a HUGE difference between art and craft. art is all about the doing... while craft is about what you have when you are finished. you almost always want childrens activities (even the very young) to be about art, not craft.
Your voice is very soothing. I almost fell asleep (not because it was boring but because of your voice). I am saving this to my favorites for relaxing.

When teaching children art it is important to engage their minds as opposed to just having an activity consider the following:
approach all work equally.
ask critical thinking questions
If the work isn't ideal (which it never will be) then why? What would be changed?
What did you like about the project?
How do these color combinations work?

I tried this activity with my 4 year-old son and his friend who is a girl. (see the video "Casandra wins at marshmallows".)
Anyway, we didn't love the outcome. So I tore the pages, soaked them in water, then overlapped the pieces to make a very nice mosaic sheet of paper.
