wannabee historians? You're trying to stigmatize outgoing and inquistive individuals who are curious about military history as you yourself cant relate or understand what the fuck theyre talking about?
@USMarineRifleman0311 No my friend. My comment was focused on the people who argue alongside each other in terms of what is false or not, how to pronounce certain names etc.. So I in fact can indeed understand what the "fuck" they are talking about, but relate to them? Not in a million years! Have a good day/night :).
@gammondrummer Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
@gammondrummer The immortals are only a tinny tiny better, then the average Persian soldier, but are still no where near the caliber of either the Macedonian or Roman armies of the later centuries. Alexander with his Macedonian army managed to defeat the much larger persian army even when they fielded Immortals.
I find the 300 story to be a little overrated. I mean sure they fought over 2 million Persians, but it was for the most part a peasant army. It was not a real professional army like that of the later Roman Legions or Macedonian army. Its like have a company of US Marines fight 10,000 civilian militia in conventional warfare. I would be more impressed if the Persians won in a had won battle on the first try. The only strength really of the Persian army was strength in numbers, and its cavalry.
@CrimsonGuard1992 The story of 300 is amazing because its the first 'real' strategy where massive numbers come into account. 300 versus just 10 000 and standing and holding is breathtaking by itself. whereas the story of Leonidas utilizing the land in this way to his advantage this early on in history is fantasmic. This is in my opinion a real good story.
@Mandochia Its a good story, but remember that the Spartans are far superior soldiers in comparison to the Persians. I think a better story would be the Roman siege of Alesia, where the Romans where encircled and attacked from both the outside and from the fort they were besieging. About 40,000 Romans vs 250,000 Gauls. Its not 2 million, but a Gaul warrior is worth like 4 Persian soldiers at least and the Romans weren't fighting in a narrow front, but were encircled from all sides.
It was not 2 million. 300 thousand they say, but I considering the world population of that time, would say no more than 100000. 2 million? Not a single country could amass such a number even today! And no they weren't a peasant army. More like conscripts in WW2. So yes, they had their training.
@VonManavis They had their training, but it is still, in my opinion, a peasant army - as they were technically peasant given very very little training. They were no better then militia. Maybe not 2 million, as most likely the greek accounts may have exaggerated it. In either case, it still
@VonManavis Some accounts say 2 million others say 500,000 or less. The point being the Spartans were still out numbered. I don't want an argument over if it was 2 mil or not.
@aurangzeb165 Maybe if you did a little bit of research then you would know the movie was never intended to be historically accurate. It was base on a graphic novel. That's why the Spartan are portrayed without armor and Xerxes as a giant. That's also why the movie has those dramatic action sequences and that yellowish tone. It's to stay true to the original graphic novel.
I am wandering if there is any movie made for Persians taken over Greece at least seven times and making three Roman Emperor to naile for them. The media is full of lies now they lie in history too. Yes in that war they resist but not with 300 people and not the much that they say here.
Can anyone can explain what difference has the spartan political model than a totalitarian and militaristic state??. Its quite strage how historians praise the courage and sacrifice of stpartans but dont see the similitudes with Nazism. I mean killing babys, weak people, and slaves to becaume tough and ready for battle. Leave your family at the age of 7 to have an entire violent military training in which the state is more important than individuals.
This is pure bullshit in so many ways... To begin with, Spartiate armour and shields all looked the same (shields: red capital lambda for Laconia on them), all weaponry and armour had to be made by blacksmiths exactly the same and delivered to "the state", which would pass them out. Also, there were not 300 Spartans at the battle. There were around 2,500 of them, 300 of which were Spartiates. The Spartiates (Spartan full citizens) were members of a ruling class about 7,000 to 8,000 in numbers.
@SPARTANZODIAC007 Yeah, you probably think that film was historically accurate. I don't quite see your point in trying to bash someone correcting a fucked-up "documentary".
But some other people are ignorant at the fact that Europeans did not discover North or South America. Or can't accept the fact that they have national pride as in every person should have but, has to much and think every one is underneath them and that there country is the best
@AYedomakha you are talking like and ignorant 6 year old kid i think you are iranian or one of those copnquered country and used as slaves soldier by Persia, there was only 300 spartan + other greek that joins the 300 spartan this was history and written long long before your bloody great great great grandparents were born
@AYedomakha There were a total of 4,200 Greeks fought at Thermopylae according to Herodotus (The Histories 7.202). Leonidas later dismissed the other Greeks except for the Thebans and the Thespians. So 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and 400 Thebans were all that were left to fight the Persian forces.
Guys first of all read lies my teacher told me because most of what is in our American history textbooks are fake okay. The hagia Sofia was made by emperor Constantine who was the first Christian roman emperor to have ruled Rome. And the Aztecs lived in what is modern day Mexico. Also yes we did look to Europe sometimes then how the hell do we have air conditioning in almost every single building in the U.S. and Europe doesn't I mean seriously If you go to the Vatican which houses and is the ba
@azndomination9802 Constantine wasn't entirely christian, he only opened the Roman Empire for multireligion that allowed christianity to be an accepted religion in the Roman Empire
The point of their last stand at Thermopylae was to defend Greece. And for the first time these heroes fought as a Nation. They weren t only Spartans there.Damn what do they teach you at school? In Greece formed for the first time the democratic state you ignorants in which you live to say this sh@t!Without that and the sacrifice of such men you would speak arabic and obey the sultan.Believe whatever you want.Note this..When my ancestors ate at great feasts and drunk wine, yours were climbing trees.
@AcruxSolus No no my poor friend..This role belongs to you..And will never change..You probably are a child,so to let you know in the upcoming years yes,we probably join your people on the trees...The economic crysis affect us all..You don t have a clue about things going on...The fact that the media are referring to Greece all the time doesn t mean that Greece is the source of the problem..You are the perfect example of another brain washed american sissy behind her pc..so classic..
@ge704 His*, and not to mention, Greece hasn't produced a single important product, book, or technological advance in over 1,500 years. And it's not really true that everyone is affected by this economic crisis - my country is growing economically, and not to mention America's economy is still growing by 2% (the state of Wisconsin has a larger GDP than all of Greece). Still feel so great? Look at yourself first before you go and lambast others.
@AcruxSolus The economic growth isn t connected to cultural and spiritual growth..Just think how many Greeks have important positions in the most famous American Universities, they lead modern research and scientific projects..Note that Geometry and all most of Chemistry,Physics,Mathematics Medicin etc are based on the work of my ancestors..American is a colony of Europe and Americans see Europe as a role model..Go and open a book about history and then come here and comment..
@ge704 You are obviously blinded by your own prejudice and bias with the Greeks. America isn't only Europeans (in fact, it's just as much Asian, African, and South American), nor were there any particularly influential or important Greeks who contributed to our society. The Czechs developed more technology, historical, music, poetry and influence in the last 200 years than the Greeks have in the past 2,000. You haven't done anything since Aristotle.
@AcruxSolus HAHAHA In 1500 years Greece haven t produced a thing???HAHAHAAHAH...What are you talking about!???!1500 ago we built AGIA SOFIA AND the land of aztecs and other rightful owners of the land you are living in(and not America as you call it) hadn t been discovered!AHAHAHAMan you are such an ignorant..I won t continue this argument..there is no point in all this but seriously you can t believe what you are writting..But another fool on the internet.how rare..have a nice day!
@ge704 Hagia Sophia was built by the Romans (Byzantines to be exact). The Aztecs never lived in North America - the Native Americans did. They were never united, they never spoke the same language - this land was never really "theirs". Like I said, the Greeks haven't done anything in the past 2,000 years and nearly disappeared in the Middle Ages until World War 2. Hope you enjoy your pathetic culture and holding on to a fading dream.
Sparta did better than Persians in fewer stuff. Athens was more strategic, but not to many soldiers, Persia had millions of it, but not as strategic as Sparta. Athens had a growing goverment, Persia was past that, and was growing into what we are now already. Athens were growing technology aswell, Persia had great engineers. Persia was richer for Engines, Outpost, Soldiers, Weapons, Armors and Warships. Exc. But Athens were not as much for the Civil War that was going on.
@SuperSlant 1st: America is not a nation, but it is an entire continent, which stretch from Canada through Brasil within to Fireland!
2nd: The real reason, why the world think, that US- citizen are uneducated is, because most of them believe all that trash that the mainstream is telling them!
3rd: The US- Government is the most culture ignorance ones, the most rude and destructive nation on our planet! So, first change that, and than complain about others!
Both modern day Greece and Persia are failures. One doesn't have a functioning economy while the other is run by religious extremists. But in the end, Persia is the winner. Maybe the fact they had a huge empire that ran for thousands of years? And Sparta? A city-state with pumped up warriors. Pretty cool, but in the grand scheme of ultimate civilization, Persia is better.
@chowdaboy7501 "Better" how? The Persian empire last for only about 300 years before it was broken down and turned into smaller states or taken over by the Parthians, Scythians, and others. The Spartan "Empire" lasted for nearly 800, ending around the time of Alexander. Saying one is 'better' is foolish - but at the end of the day, nearly 2,500 years later we speak of Spartan bravery and strength, not Persian.
@chowdaboy7501 That Empire was inherited by the Persians from the Medes. The Parthians were the successors who expanded the empire from "Iran to Egypt". The Persians simply maintained a small empire, from approximately Turkey to Iran. They couldn't even take a small group of islands in the Agean. Besides, the Greeks gave us philosophy, science, mathematics, politics, democracy, astronomy, and language - where did the Persians do again?
@AcruxSolus Majority of things from Greece were already discovered in Ancient India and Babylon. And when did Sparta ever give any science, math, politics, democracy, astronomy, and language? And Greek "democracy" consisted of Greek, of age, male, land-owning people, not everyone, so I hardly count that as "democracy".
@chowdaboy7501 Your comments should be erased....You probably are an American who doesn t have a clue about history..And i understand that because you have only 200 years of history and we the greeks have 3000 years.. I am NOT a racist and i DON T say this because i want to insult you.But i just can t see these comments, devastating the memory of my ancestors..For the first time the spartans didn t fight for Sparta olny! They fought and stood their ground for all the Greeks!
@ge704 Yeah, they fought as a nation Then a couple years later they fell apart and fought each other Then the Turks came in, took your land and is still on Cyprus. Ad Greece has a AMAZING economy. BTW, I'm not even Persian, etc.
@chowdaboy7501 A true history lesson..well said.."Came in"..Where??In a tavern? How do you connect Ancient Greece with the turks and Cyprus and our economy i really don t know..I didn t say that Greeks invented everything or ruled the world!Greeks,Egyptians and other Nations set the foundation of all the science we know..One borrowed from each other and that s why they advanced in this degree..The foundation of democracy though,in the first time in history took place in Athens..
@chowdaboy7501 Anyway you all need a good history lesson..And wikipedia or your school s history books as i see are not enough..So just enjoy the video and try to think and search before you write something..ade kai twra!
@shortist2003 you are talking bullshit then if that is what you think if you are educated person all what you learn is also shit people like you have a bleeding tongue
@chowdaboy7501 Wrong. Modern astronomy was devised by Greeks (Aristarchus), so were Mathematics (Pythagoras), Science (Aristotle), Historical Analysis (Thucydides), Philosophy (Thales), and Poetry (Homer). Two of the Seven Sages of Greece were Spartan. Their battle tactics, diet and way of life has been admired for nearly two millenia. Still think they didn't contribute much?
@AcruxSolus Many math systems dated back to the Babylonians in 2000BC, philosophy and poetry were a bit in Babylon but mostly in the Indian systems like the Rig Vedas. Yes, Greece did contribute, but half of what they did was already thought of, and merely repeated upon.
@chowdaboy7501 Greek mathematics was much more sophisticated than the mathematics that had been developed by earlier cultures. Greeks used deductive reasoning, rather than inductive used by pre-Greek societies. So the argument that other cultures' developed "mathematics" is a moot point, since they used it incorrectly. The Illiad is nearly as old as the Vedas and more relevant - it contributed directly to Western Culture for the next 3,000 years.
@TheJoshwallace They didn't defend "democracy", per say. They defended Greece, which at the time was a model of democracy (even though many famous poets, philosophers and warriors disliked Democracy and prefered Oligarchy).
"The Spartans were the Delta Force of the ancient world". Ooh-Rah ! Realistically Xerxes Army was probably on the order of 200,000, not 2 million. But when you consider they were opposed by aproximately 7,000 Greeks, and kicked thier ass for three days, the Spartans have truly earned thier legendary status.
@TheThunderduck Actually the figures are closer to 80,000 - 120,000. In ancient times it would have been difficult to field an Army and maintain it for that long of a period.
180,000 men total including 10,000 cavalry. After beating and subjugating many Greek states, another 30,000 Greeks joined. "Some believe" are usually the lunatics and idiots that quote 2,000,0000. All historical analysts mention 180,000 men. The TOTAL size of the Persian army was 300,000 men
@breezeman199 but logistics alone would have required that an army of 300,000 be supported by at least 300,000 servants + concubines and whatnot. For example each Immortal had like 2 slaves and a sex slave assigned to him. Even the figures for the Greek army size is off, as hoplites back then were accompanied by an armed retainer. (Basically like how knights from the Middle Ages had squires)
I love how these guys are like "Greece is now one country!" when barely 50 years later, Athens goes to war with Sparta and Sparta sacks the city of Athens. And then they are like "Democracy wouldn't exist!" But the Roman Republic was established 30 years before Xerxes invaded Greece (and we all know our governments are based off a Republican form of government, not Democracy), while the Carthaginian Republic had been existing for quite a while before that.
@BoxStudioExecutive Logistically, Xerxes probably had the ability to do so. Of course, given that Persia's empire was largely land-based and Italy sits at the fringes of the known world at this time, as well as the relative lack of political, economic, and strategical incentives to make such an invasion viable, I sincerely doubt that Xerxes would have pursued such a campaign.
@henderson023 then western civilization would still have been saved :D Without a proper Greece at the time, Rome would have had an easier time conquering Greek Italy and Greek Sicily.
Brave Greeks please fights your economic mess and save the world!

CrimsonGuard1992 2 weeks ago
@CrimsonGuard1992 The story of 300 is amazing because its the first 'real' strategy where massive numbers come into account. 300 versus just 10 000 and standing and holding is breathtaking by itself. whereas the story of Leonidas utilizing the land in this way to his advantage this early on in history is fantasmic. This is in my opinion a real good story.
Mandochia 2 weeks ago
@Mandochia Its a good story, but remember that the Spartans are far superior soldiers in comparison to the Persians. I think a better story would be the Roman siege of Alesia, where the Romans where encircled and attacked from both the outside and from the fort they were besieging. About 40,000 Romans vs 250,000 Gauls. Its not 2 million, but a Gaul warrior is worth like 4 Persian soldiers at least and the Romans weren't fighting in a narrow front, but were encircled from all sides.
CrimsonGuard1992 2 weeks ago
@CrimsonGuard1992
It was not 2 million. 300 thousand they say, but I considering the world population of that time, would say no more than 100000. 2 million? Not a single country could amass such a number even today! And no they weren't a peasant army. More like conscripts in WW2. So yes, they had their training.
VonManavis 2 weeks ago
@VonManavis They had their training, but it is still, in my opinion, a peasant army - as they were technically peasant given very very little training. They were no better then militia. Maybe not 2 million, as most likely the greek accounts may have exaggerated it. In either case, it still
CrimsonGuard1992 2 weeks ago
@VonManavis Some accounts say 2 million others say 500,000 or less. The point being the Spartans were still out numbered. I don't want an argument over if it was 2 mil or not.
CrimsonGuard1992 2 weeks ago
@aurangzeb165 Maybe if you did a little bit of research then you would know the movie was never intended to be historically accurate. It was base on a graphic novel. That's why the Spartan are portrayed without armor and Xerxes as a giant. That's also why the movie has those dramatic action sequences and that yellowish tone. It's to stay true to the original graphic novel.

The Spartiates (Spartan full citizens) were members of a ruling class about 7,000 to 8,000 in numbers.

ceboym 3 weeks ago
@AYedomakha There were a total of 4,200 Greeks fought at Thermopylae according to Herodotus (The Histories 7.202). Leonidas later dismissed the other Greeks except for the Thebans and the Thespians. So 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and 400 Thebans were all that were left to fight the Persian forces.

AcruxSolus 3 weeks ago

Both modern day Greece and Persia are failures. One doesn't have a functioning economy while the other is run by religious extremists. But in the end, Persia is the winner. Maybe the fact they had a huge empire that ran for thousands of years? And Sparta? A city-state with pumped up warriors. Pretty cool, but in the grand scheme of ultimate civilization, Persia is better.
chowdaboy7501 3 weeks ago
@chowdaboy7501 "Better" how? The Persian empire last for only about 300 years before it was broken down and turned into smaller states or taken over by the Parthians, Scythians, and others. The Spartan "Empire" lasted for nearly 800, ending around the time of Alexander. Saying one is 'better' is foolish - but at the end of the day, nearly 2,500 years later we speak of Spartan bravery and strength, not Persian.
AcruxSolus 3 weeks ago
@AcruxSolus Maybe Sparta lasted longer but the Persians carved an empire from Iran to Egypt. That is greater than some last stand at a pass to me.
chowdaboy7501 3 weeks ago
@chowdaboy7501 That Empire was inherited by the Persians from the Medes. The Parthians were the successors who expanded the empire from "Iran to Egypt". The Persians simply maintained a small empire, from approximately Turkey to Iran. They couldn't even take a small group of islands in the Agean. Besides, the Greeks gave us philosophy, science, mathematics, politics, democracy, astronomy, and language - where did the Persians do again?
AcruxSolus 3 weeks ago
@AcruxSolus Majority of things from Greece were already discovered in Ancient India and Babylon. And when did Sparta ever give any science, math, politics, democracy, astronomy, and language? And Greek "democracy" consisted of Greek, of age, male, land-owning people, not everyone, so I hardly count that as "democracy".

@chowdaboy7501 A true history lesson..well said.."Came in"..Where??In a tavern? How do you connect Ancient Greece with the turks and Cyprus and our economy i really don t know..I didn t say that Greeks invented everything or ruled the world!Greeks,Egyptians and other Nations set the foundation of all the science we know..One borrowed from each other and that s why they advanced in this degree..The foundation of democracy though,in the first time in history took place in Athens..

ceboym 3 weeks ago
@chowdaboy7501 Wrong. Modern astronomy was devised by Greeks (Aristarchus), so were Mathematics (Pythagoras), Science (Aristotle), Historical Analysis (Thucydides), Philosophy (Thales), and Poetry (Homer). Two of the Seven Sages of Greece were Spartan. Their battle tactics, diet and way of life has been admired for nearly two millenia. Still think they didn't contribute much?
AcruxSolus 3 weeks ago
@AcruxSolus Many math systems dated back to the Babylonians in 2000BC, philosophy and poetry were a bit in Babylon but mostly in the Indian systems like the Rig Vedas. Yes, Greece did contribute, but half of what they did was already thought of, and merely repeated upon.
chowdaboy7501 3 weeks ago
@chowdaboy7501 Greek mathematics was much more sophisticated than the mathematics that had been developed by earlier cultures. Greeks used deductive reasoning, rather than inductive used by pre-Greek societies. So the argument that other cultures' developed "mathematics" is a moot point, since they used it incorrectly. The Illiad is nearly as old as the Vedas and more relevant - it contributed directly to Western Culture for the next 3,000 years.

TheThunderduck 3 weeks ago 2
@TheThunderduck Actually the figures are closer to 80,000 - 120,000. In ancient times it would have been difficult to field an Army and maintain it for that long of a period.

breezeman199 4 weeks ago

Could Xerxes have invaded Italy, too?
BoxStudioExecutive 4 weeks ago
@BoxStudioExecutive Logistically, Xerxes probably had the ability to do so. Of course, given that Persia's empire was largely land-based and Italy sits at the fringes of the known world at this time, as well as the relative lack of political, economic, and strategical incentives to make such an invasion viable, I sincerely doubt that Xerxes would have pursued such a campaign.
henderson023 4 weeks ago
@henderson023 then western civilization would still have been saved :D Without a proper Greece at the time, Rome would have had an easier time conquering Greek Italy and Greek Sicily.
