Most of the men Maxie has ever loved or cared for either died of left her. I think she doens't want to commit herself to Spinelli because she feels like in the end he will either leave her or die like the others have. I think that she does not want to risk her heart in a relationship that she thinks would end badly and would rather keep Spinelli as a close friend.
