Yep...we'll all just drive door stops around like he said below. Because apparently cars that don't crush are the safest. Guess he didn't think about what would happen if two of those collided. Ever played pool?
Notice how a doorstop can prevent a very heavy door from opening, and the doorstop is rubber or wood? A car designed like a doorstop could flip a cement truck and the car occupants would emerge unscathed. But, Fords are boxy and attract body damage, which is profitable. Everything revolves around hospitals and the careers that they sustain, or maybe I'm just hallucinatin'.
@seapeddler no in a crash if you stopped instantly you wold die quicker so if the front or back deforms more than the slower you accelerate/decelerate.
@camman309 Yes, there has to be crash absorption. But could not a car be designed to cause any vehicle to ramp over it instead of going head-on? Anyway, if people didn't drive, they'd be running off cliffs like lemmings just to make a buck.
@seapeddler and there is not many things to just be that strong...and im not saying dont drive im saying drive a safe car. those jeeps was not designd for safety that much
I would be concerned about the structural integrity of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have a feeling that the rear seat passengers could be seriously injured or killed in the crash even if the fuel tank doesn't explode. It is entirely possible in a very severe rear end crash, survival might not be possible period since it is possible that the front portion of the passenger compartment could collapse during the impact. People who own these vehicles should scrap them when the time comes.
@UBConquered What speed and by what kind of car. I am not saying they are that safe when they are not but they are not that bad. Yes I don't ever want to be rear ended with one. I got my Commander for that.
@GmTruckCarLove I don't know how fast, but i'm pretty sure it was a Licoln, forget what it was, but it was pretty large, may have been a town car. Hit her so hard it tipped on its side. Friend of mine has a 98 ZJ w/ the 5.2, going strong even w/ a bent frame.
@UBConquered Okay one question. How did the frame bend? Also a low car can take down a SUV. The under side is not that durable and the car can go under it. Pushing up the seat and so on.
@GmTruckCarLove Don't ask how, I wasn't actually there but it did tip over, and I was told it the ZJ frame was uneven in early December, he said he discovered it when he was draining oil. I'm pretty sure it's actually a unibody style.
@GmTruckCarLove Well no one seems to know, last time he took it off road was October. Entire time he's had it he never rolled it or anything, he hit a deer one time but luckly it was just cosmetic damage.
@filmftw3 Acctuly all Jeeps are capable off road with the Wrangler line up doing the hard core shit but the GC is right behind. For a all around SUV off road and on the Cherokee gives a great balance. Commander along with Grand Cherokee is capable of rubacon stock. Thus the 'Trail Rated' name plate.
American cars were safer than European and Japanese cars from 1900-1973. The the other way around from 1974-2002, 2003-present they are the same. With a slant towards American because they weigh more on average and have larger crumple zones.
Everyone loves ripping on the Americans for making shit cars, but did anyone notice the Ford Taurus? It punched right through a much larger, taller and heavier vehicle and kept its passenger compartment intact! The issue here is that CHRYSLER makes shitty cars.
@jacketman22 LOL, this is the only time I've ever heard praise for the Ford Taurus, and a number of my friends' families have been Ford employees for generations.
@215alessio The old Taurus was an entirely American car. Designed and built there (explains why they used to rust so badly). The Mondeo was sold in North America as the Ford Contour (which also rusted badly). The two are unrelated, and the new Mondeo you're talking about is set to be rebadged as the 2013 Ford Fusion. The next Taurus is about 10 times bigger than a Mondeo.
Ford is finally listening and bringing its European models to the US. First we will get the all-new Fiesta, then the next Focus and eventually the Mondeo is going to come here as the next Taurus, according to CAR.
You do realize that the Jeep shown here is not a new design? It was designed in 1998 or before, and was sold 1999-2004. Why they were testing an old car now is kinda pointless. The place of manufacture is irrelevant, all cars are engineered and tested differently. Some do better than others. It has and likely always will be that way.
@weed34600 I'm sure you did very well in Grade 10 physics, congrats. But I've been in a car accident before, involving a moving Honda Accord vs. a stationary Volvo XC90. Now following your logic, the Accord should have been a little beaten while the Volvo would have been horribly mangled. Guess which one came out better. PROTIP: It wasn't the Accord.
@GmTruckCarLove Don't know what you're smoking, but Chryslers from before 2005 or so had very poor crash test results. Even the 300, which is quite good on frontal impact, does badly in side-impact collisions.
@jacketman22 Dodge Ram 2002 on up get good frontal crash test, Jeep Grand Cherokee (2005 on up), Commander, Patriot, Caliber, and this list goes on. Frontal of course. Anyone that buys a Neon needs to die anyways lol.
@92CamryLE If you look at ANY car with a poor frontal offset rating, you'll notice the passenger compartment buckles (for example, compare the Pontiac TransPort to the Honda Odyssey). You DO NOT want that to happen because it indicates that the front crumple zones did not absorb enough of the impact. Taurus did well, Jeep dun goof'd.
@jacketman22 Of course, but that doesn't mean you don't want the car to crumple. Crumple zones are designed to absorb impact without compromising cabin space (passenger survival area). If this Taurus is tested like modern day cars are today it will crumple like a tin can. If it is in a 25 mph accident it won't get much damage, but the passengers will.
@jacketman22 oh yeah and look at toyota and honda for making cars made out of paper look how much damage they get even for getting rear ended your dead
@cds417 I've seen the crash tests for the most popular Toyota and Honda models, and even though I'm not a fan of Japanese cars I'll give credit where credit is due. Up until very recently their smaller offerings performed noticeably better in tests than anything put out by Detroit. But if safety is your concern, buy a Volvo.
@jacketman22 yeah dude my friend here at highschool got into a rollover accident in his volvo about 2 months ago in his 2006 volvo s60 and only hurt his c4 and c5 in his neck the car rolled about hmmm 6 times
@cds417 Can't go wrong with a Volvo or a Saab. Solid as fuck and pretty much the only cars that can survive a head-on collision with a moose (barring pickups and large SUVs)
one would think a 2-ton behemoth should be a safe thing to crash with, and look! it's apparently made of paper! i can't see no difference between this and the cheap stolen designs of european cars that china produces. and those were some horrible crashtests!
@druide106 Ok you are comparing a 15 year old design to new ones ? Try looking at the crash testing out there right now for say... The Grand Cherokee, and compare... Just as safe as European rivals but thousands of dollars less. Oh wait there is Volvo's system that automatically brakes for yo..... oh wait that doesn't really work so well.
@druide106 Yeah, sure but it's mostly about weight. This model of jeep has always been unsafe, but still I would rather be in a car that is bigger. What do you think would win in a crash, a smart car, or a full size 3/4 ton truck?
@TheTrihorn1 I crashed mine in 2007 and walked out without any scratches or bruises. No cab intrusion at 50MPH. The 86 Cutlass we hit looked nothing like a car and the old man was on his deathbed. That fucker saved my mothers and I life.
