  • Its funny, shaving used to be an annoying chore, until I started using shaving soap and an old school "safety razor!" Heck, one of these days I might get a spiffy straight razor! thanks for sharing this nifty footage!

  • lather porn!

  • This video is nicely done. Thanks for sharing!

    PaceShave*com

  • Started wet shaving today and all I know I know from you. ^^

However, my lather ends up kind of watery and I can't get it as thick on my face as in the videos. Does it need more water or less to get it thicker, or do I just need to stir it longer?

  • @Yora21 You probably just need to stir a little longer

  • Can you clarify something I read a while back....I recall reading that you shouldn't use any type of oil in combination with your shave brush and cream as you will do harm to the bristles. I personally use a silver tip badger hair brush. Thanks in advance.

  • @maydanlex some oils are brush-friendly, particularly if they come from a company that also sells shaving brushes. Art of Shaving, Pacific Shaving, or Truefitt & Hill for example. But when in doubt, avoid oils you might find in the grocery store or drugstore/chemist.

  • You could shave a cactus with that stuff lol

  • You're videos are the best. Wish I'd have found them first. Today was my first shave with no lingering irritation whatsoever. I have gone through a bar of Col Conk in less than a month making lather in the mug with the soap only to have it not stick around long enough for the shave. Your other videos set me on a great path for purchases that get me what I need the first time around... at least from here. Thanks for direct answers to my questions. You are the needle--Forums are haystacks.

  • mantic59-couple questions for you:

-Using this method, do you use the same 'almond' size amount of cream?

-Do you use this super lather regularly or once in a while?

Thanks for all the videos. They were very helpful in my starting to shave using a DE.

  • @pantablo i can usually get away with less cream, maybe a little bigger than a pea. I don't do this regularly, just when I feel like it.

  • I've used a lot of different kinds of cream but after noticing that you used Proraso I figured I would give it a shot. I don't know why people dislike the smell because I think this stuff is the best i've used so far!! Are there any other creams you prefer?

  • seems kinda time consuming

  • @daboss212 It's really not that time consuming once you get it down. Also, when you dedicate extra time and care when taking a sharp piece of metal to your face you just end up with a better shave :). I say you should give it a try. What have you got to lose?

  • In my attempts I have gotten a lather that either drys out quickly or becomes thin and watery very quickly. I have tried it several ways, adding only small amounts of water at a time...what gives? Any thoughts?

  • чо ты млять мыло мацаешь как бабу? тупой пендос.

  • Hey mantic. Have you ever used the "Every Man Jack" shaving cream from Target? I was thinking of buying it along with van der hagen deluxe soap to use this method.

  • The man likes his lather...

  • I tried it. Used Proraso from the tube like you did (I recognize that green!).

    Incredible. Like warm whipped cream.

  • Hey, I tried this technique a couple of weeks ago and now will not go back to just soap or cream alone. The results are fantastic. Thanks!!

  • I've been using just TOBS cream for a few months now and recently found an old puck of soap around the house. I shaved using your instructions on superlather yesterday and the difference was night and day, in terms of ease of getting it to the right consistency and slickness.

  • piggie, are you a hermaphrodite?

  • that is some ridiculous lather there mantic.

You got me turned onto wet shaving a year ago and I recently started my venture to actually start :P I have my brush and Col. Conk's bay rum and I'm ordering a Feather Artist Club straight razor within the week. Thanks for the awesome, informative videos!

  • Where is the longer version of this vid?

  • Mantic59- where can I get a cup like that ?because the bowl I got I'd way too small. Great videos

  • MrBawston- its a latte cup/soup bowl i found at a local discount store

  • You can spend lots of money for a special shaving bowl, or just find something at Target or WalMart for much less. That's what I do.

  • try a large capochino mug?

  • Good Videos but dude you gotta set you white balance.

  • im a girl.

your videos make me wish i was a guy so i would have a beard to shave :[

  • There's no reason you can't use wetshaving to shave your legs. Some women in the Badger and Blade forums do.

  • ah,

i have no leg hair either.

    LOL.

i get it from my mum.

    weird huh?

  • weird, but probably lucky

  • @Piggieelaydee.....this stuff is GREAT for your legs...i actually feel it benifits us more...sure facial skin is pretty senisitive but think about your underarm needing the same attention...and you can lather up a leg in no time...the puffy brush covers mega surface area...dont be jealous- use the old schoolness of it:) i love it! and w/ all the extra's soap has your legs are silky

  • @Piggieelaydee You could use it on your pussy and pits

  • that's about the nicest thing I ever heard

  • @Piggieelaydee you have legs don't ya?

  • I tried this technique this morning. I only used a cheap (less than 2 pounds) shaving soap from Wilkinson Sword combined with some Prorasso but the results where astonishing!

The lather was thick and lubricating in a way I've never seen before and the resulting shave was fantastic.

The only downside is that the preparation time is much higher, so this may have to be saved for weekends and special occasions.

  • Again, stop complaining Stevo..

Use the other bathroom to shave ;)

  • i want to eat it...

  • i'm off to try this, thanx for sharing

  • Cheesey!

  • Thank you for the great video!

  • If there is a place in heaven for most excellent assistance in shaving lather production, you will have two spots! I thought it would be a bit of "whatever" but I made this and was so suprised. I only wish I had done this before I shaved this morning.

  • Dear mantic59,

I have a new tub of Col. Conk's shaving soap. Would this technique work if I combined it with Gillette shaving cream? Also could I combine this with the upside-down lathering technique you recently posted?

  • Thurisaz314159- I would not recommend doing this with a Gillette shaving cream. But yes, you could combine this technique with the upside down lather technique.

  • As a tough beard/wimpy skin guy new to wetshaving, I've found that my Trumpers lime soap makes tons of nice lather, but the shave was not as close for me as Musgo, Proraso or Em's shaving creams (I'm still waiting for my Truefit & Hill). Noticed any trends re: toughness of beard vs. product? One thing I've noticed, "priming" with Skin Food before lathering is awesome. Way better than my Anthony Preshave Oil, which is thick like olive oil.

  • rdangelo- I'm suprised you got a poor shave with Trumper's. Its usually excellent. Tough beards usually need more preperation no matter the product: yes, Skin Food can be awsome as a pre-shave!

  • I can't help but think that's an unnecessary waste of potable water, an ever-dwindling resource. Rather than fill up the whole sink just to keep your small mug warm, couldn't you have sprung for something a Georgetown or Moss scuttle?

  • szj23- That's an excellent point.

  • Always a critic...or maybe just a hypocrite...I bet you use a badger brush, and drive a car with leather seats, or maybe you use a cologne with ambergris in it...hmmph! Water....Right!

  • Zanomatt:

Obviously, I use a badger brush (as do most of the folks watching Mantic's videos, I'd wager). Regardless, I fail to see how that (or 'leather seats' or ambergris based cologne for that matter) would DIRECTLY affect my water consumption or conservation efforts thereof. How are my views on water conservation hypocritical, in that respect? Are you averse to water conservation? Do you not need water, the way the rest of us do? Please explain.

  • rajagrauk: Water itself is not a dwindling resource, but I was referring specifically to fresh, potable water: water fit for human consumption (which IS an ever dwindling resource and a SCARCE one, in many parts of the world). Wars have been fought over water and water rights, and I'd like to avoid something like that if possible. And though all water makes it's way through the 'water cycle', the water table in many places cannot be replenished as fast as it's being drained through human use.

  • rajagrauk: Also, if you wish to wring your hands over the fur in Badger brushes, by all means do! If you feel so badly about your own brush, you're welcome to dispose of it.

If you'd prefer to gently shear a live badger and make a new brush out of it's humanely harvested fur, you're more than welcome to.

  • I agree that water is an issue, even here in the United States. In California, we are dependent in a large way to water in other states. Especially in southern California, we are looking at water rationing in the next 6-8 months due to the insidious lack of rainfall in the past few seasons. On a logic note, it is a red-herring fallacy to argue against a topic by introducing another, slightly related topic. The badger hair vs. water consumption argument is a waste of good forum flame!

  • Also, it is useless in a debate to argue ad hominem..insulting the person behind the other side's argument.

  • I don't live in a "developing" nation (what a stupid term - maybe they're developing, maybe they're just flailing away in vain, which is how they got where they are). There are no water shortages in most places, so why are people living their lives in guilt? Shave away, treat others with decency, and forget guilt.

  • hi mark, just wonndering if that is aramis shave soap you are using and if so how would you rate its performance as an 'everyday' shave soap?

  • rormchugh- No, the soap I was using was from emsplace(dot)com. They have some excellent shaving products.

  • Can i use dove soap bar? I read the ingredients and found glycerin in it, but i'm not sure if it's going to work.

  • veguetabuddy- I don't think Dove would work.

  • I add 5 drops of glycerine in mine. Uberlather!

  • AustinJC9- You should expect a medium quality brush to last at least 5 years. Ten years is not unheard of.

  • Hey Mantic, Just a quick question, i have a medium quality badger hair brush. How often should i replace my brush, or in other words how long will a deceant brush with average use last? 6 months, a year, two years?

  • Take care of it properly and it will last for as long as Mantic pointed out. There are lots of information on how to maintain your brush properly, depending on what your brush is made of different approaches are suggested.

Rinsing the bristles in a mild borax solution once or twice a year is what most recommend.

  • So Mantic I went out and bought all this new shaving gear, set me back about 150 bucks. I got to tell you I have never had a shave like this!

Your videos have been a god send for me. Thank you for all your work!

  • can superlather be made with any shaving soap and cream?

i used crabtree and evelyn soap and another cream, is that okay?

  • dumpling9999-- Should work fine!

  • what brand of soap were you using?

  • dumpling9999- That particular one was a shave soap from emsplace(dot)com.

  • I've been making superlather for years with Williams and Shaving Gel. I had no idea that it had a name! :-)

  • When you say olive oil...you mean soap only or I can add some olive oil straight to the brush?

  • WOOOOW!!!! hahaha i'm so excited from these vids. i can't wait to run out and buy everything i need as soon as i get a chance!!!

  • You need to take time off for yourself! I used to think the same way! Now I enjoy my little time in the shower to "Pamper" myself if you will, I enjoy making some warm lather and then shaving with such finese and precision! I like it. Hey we men need our time shaving time thats the only Luxurious thing we have!! unlike woman who have manicures, pedicures, massages, facials, spa's etc..)

  • Can I do this with shaving cream that comes in a tub 'cause all I have so far is shaving soap and nancy boy shaving cream.

  • Sure, just scoop out a lima bean-sized bit of cream from the tub with your finger (or a small spoon or a tongue depressor or whatever).

  • Wow, looks like I'll be heading to colonial drug for some soap to try this!

  • I'll be sure to give this a try. This begs the question though, why don't they just add the glycerin soap in with the shaving creme before they sell it to you?

BTW, I love your videos. Keep 'em coming.

  • Actually most good shaving creams do contain glycerin. "Superlather" works because you're saturating the brush fully so more water can be retained when you do mix in cream. Better saturation + hydration = better lather.

  • Great video as always Mantic!
