I like how the consequences of Kirk's reprogramming reflected the different times the movies were made in. Back in the early 80s, reprogramming a computer simulation would have been something special, so he gets a commendation. Now, computers are a lot more common, so he gets almost expelled because it looks much more like cheating.
@jimbopumbapigsticks Yes but Star Fleet originally was impressed with the initiative that Kirk had to win, it was cheating but he found a way to beat the system. That says something about a person, it's a sign of a leader who they can see as determined to pull through no matter what the odds. That's why he passed despite what he did.
Two major differences between the Kirks and the Federations, Shatner did it not due to his own pride but due to the beliefs instilled in him by his time on Tarsus as well as what his father taught him, things the Pine Kirk did not go through since Kirk was only on Tarsus due to his father's assignment there. In the prime universe Starfleet gave him a commendation for thinking outside the box, this universe attempted to throw him out for cheating.
I just wish that the 2009 film could have make it so NOT obvious that Kirk is cheating. I mean, come on, I almost expected him to say, "By the way, all you officers watching this, I reporgramed the computer."
Yeah, I don't really like how Kirk is written now. He's a total douchebag. I don't know if the novels ever mentioned how Kirk hacked the test, or if the method in this movie was made up by the writing staff, but I don't like how they did it in this movie. It was too obvious, and it really played up Kirk's douchiness.
I always figured he changed the program so that the Klingons would answer a particular kind of hail, rather than something anyone could accidentally do (e.g., not firing).
@TaranAlvein in the movie set came with a deleated scenes section. in that section it showed how kirk reprogramed the test. he sent a message, similar to todays e-mail, to the girl he was hooking up with in ohuras room the night before the test, he told her to open the message at a cretian time, i think the message said sorry about this or something, when she opened it it reprogrammed the test at the same time like a virus would today. i have to watch it again to see the specifics.

NO NO NO. Old Kirk did not believe in the no win. New Kirk just hated loosing. There is a difference. Also Old Kirk had an imagination; he was rewarded for betting the no win. New Kirk has no imagination so he gets punished. Old Kirk had class, new Kirk is a pansy. Old Kirk would not take advantage of his friends, the new Kirk shits on his friends.
@FishfilmInc No one likes to loose. What made the real Kirk different was that he was a brilliant strategist, he also understood what motivates people. The new Kirk just did not care about anyone but himself and Pike. See my True Origins of Kirk on my channel here on YouTube.
@Trekfreek That was true until TOS Spock mind-melded with him and implanted a lifetime of TOS Kirk's memories into his head. Never let a Vulcan (or a psychotic woman) mess around inside your head.
@BloodofPatriots Lol. But I saw the movie the only thing Kid Kirk got form Spock was a lame ass story about how the universe was going to be destroyed by a Super nova, and how a dumb ass Romulan war Lord chased him into a black hole (that did not act like a black hole) that was made by magic goo. Young Kirk still picked fights and pissed on the wrong people. The movie was just plain stupid. I would rather watch Spy Kids 40 times in a row (like I did with my Nieces when they were kids).
@Trekfreek If you remember your Trek lore, mind-melds always come with unexpected transfers of literal and emotional memories from EVERY person the Vulcan has mind-melded with in the past. That's why Spock was able to finally mind-meld with his father's memories and emotions through a mind-meld with Picard. Damn, did I just type that? I am such a frakking nerd.
@BloodofPatriots Not always. The effect of the mind meld is only relevant to the story being told. In Star Trek IV it is implied that McCoy remembers nothing of what Spock's soul went through. In Specter of the Gun the mind meld did not stop Kirk from believing the gun man was real. In Star Trek VI the Mind meld caused pain when certain memories were probed but did not exist. And so on... I'm a bigger nerd! YES! LOL.
@BloodofPatriots Yes they are, and so are Tachyons, Tri-Lithium, and a slew of other little things. But what made Star Trek different than other Sci-Fi shows (until STXI: Jar Jar Directs) is its attention to scientific, political, and culture detail and its ability to study the human condition in an entertaining way. The new movie is just Star Wars redressed to look like Star Trek. They can't even get the military culture right.
@StoneKnivesBearskins I'm sure the apple thing is more than just coincidence, and him eating an apple would be the last thing his instructors would be worried about at that time, in my opinion......
This is a nice compilation of Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek II. I like how TNG pulled off an episode similar to the Kobayashi Maru scenario ("Yesterday's Enterprise")
As someone who really did grow up with ST, from the VERY beginning, thank you for this. You honor the original and the potential of the new. Now if they just don't screw it up totally (I don't mind a little rebooting, but please, don't take it out of the galaxy).

In Star Trek 2, when Kirk is telling Saavik how he won the test, he's eating an apple.
In the 2009 Star Trek, when Kirk is taking the test, he's eating an apple.
That's kind of interesting how they did that, but would Kirk be allowed to eat anything while taking the test?
Anyone?
