It's a shame when someone passes attempting to live out a desire or dream. We call it a tragic accident. Even when the person dies it's a celebration, the died doing what they wanted to do. They may not got to the peak of a mtn., but they have reached a much higher peak. I pray for all that have died attempting to live out there dreams
@funkyflights A monster ? It's only one of the most beautiful mountains we have. And just cause every year mountaineers (you can call them live sick idiots as well) try to get their peak pic of it, or die already trying to get up doesn't make the mountain to a monster :) - Just look at the garbage dump they made out of the Sagarmatha. It's a shame. Loads of oxygen tanks, tents & other rubbish covering the highest mountain we have. Men is the monster.

Probably the most difficult 8000m, and therefore famous, peak. While K2 is a beast, several lower mountains are by expert account more difficult, such as Baintha Brakk (The Ogre) and Latok I&II.
@Waleed97j K2 doesn't stand for killer-2. When K2 and the surrounding peaks were being categorized, they were given a number and the prefix K for Karakorum, the range in which they lie. There was no local name for K2, so it stuck.

I just finished the book "No Way Down" about this tragedy. I have also read several other books about the Everest disaster. I find it morbidly fascinating for some reason. Why do these people do it? They seem so happy when they reach the summit and yet that is not even half their battle. More people die on the decent. None of what I read sounds like "fun" of any sort. If you want to watch a pretty good documentary about the subject, watch "Touching The Void".
@jeannebug1 Its just in you or it isn't. Words just can't describe the ambition to set out and do things to such a great magnitude. Its a high once you are out there I assume. I suppose just like runners get a "runners high" but only 50 times more extreme. I'm no expert on mountain climbing, but I want to climb Everest one day.
@jeannebug1 Jeanne, you should watch Everest: Beyond the Limit. It is a fascinating Discovery channel program about the actual process of climbing Everest and what the climbers go through. I think you might enjoy it!
@jeannebug1 Touching The Void and The Beckoning Silence are fascinating ...... the only problem is they are about and by Joe Simpson who is an irratating arsehole. Try and ignore him when watching and you will enjoy them more!
@jeannebug1 The Beckoning Silence is the next book and film by Joe Simpson. It's not about Simpson himself this time it's about a famous climb of The Eiger in the 30's by an German/Austrian expedition. @psilocyberspaceman your a fucking moron. sit inside your lexus and experience the "joys of life". give some respect for the fallen climbers. there balls are 1000000x bigger than yours
@trentandjordan Thanks for the roses. Guess the "big balls" boys also play chicken with trucks on the highway. Their balls are now 1,000,000 times more frozen than mine... "joy of life" hahahaha... you’re hilarious!

@TheGreasepit thats a pretty fucked up thing to say dont u think, pretty immature actually. what kind of person r u, making a statement like that makes u the lowest of low. what if someone close to u died, maybe someone has already, how would u feel reading a statement like that of ur loved one? i bet u wouldnt be saying shit like that. LOWEST OF THE LOW
lol adamb9098. you are right, the payoff is only in peoples' heads. either you look like a dipshit for dying on a rock or you climb a rock and no one cares. the important part to remember is that this provides news stories for the networks and entertainment for the rest of us.
@mrnoodleisdead Yes let's all remain little children and be entertained by the death and misery of others.
Let's all celebrate not doing anything at all to challenge ourselves, and sit in our warm little hovels and cynically pretend that we're better than the rest of them - whilst sitting on our fat asses doing absolutely nothing.
Hopefully very soon all of these idiots that want to throw away their lives for their egos will have all died on these mountains. Then the entire masturbatory practice will be ended as well.
@bashfulbrother Sounds to me like obvious projection: I've no doubt that it's people like you who're the only real folk who masturbate incessantly to get through your own sad little life.
The rest of us understand that life is for living, not cowering in fear...
But I'll never actually hope you die.
Because I'm not a childish idiot spewing hate just because I can't get off my ass and live...
@cinesimonj First, go and educate yourself on defense mechanisms. Second, look up the term PSEUDO-intellectual. Third, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I won't bother trying to explain to you the meaning of my statements as I would have to use one or two syllable words, and you are not worth the effort. Plain and simple, the only reason these guys and women climb is to bolster their low self-esteem. Much the same as you when you try to pretend you are educated.
@bashfulbrother People don't climb mountains to bolster their low self-esteem, at least not any more than any other area. It's about the adrenaline rush, and pushing the limits of what one is able to do. All professional climbers are fully aware of the dangers of their expedition, especially if they are on K2.
@dgtucker I realize that. I was just giving the "genius" a hard time. I do think that on some of these climbs the goal of reaching the summit becomes all consuming at the expense of humanity. Take the climbs in Everest, there are several accounts of those in the death zone walking past people dying in front of them and they are more concerned with reaching the summit than helping their fellow climber. In that case the only motivation has to be ego and selfish concern.
if you haven't read k2 by ed viesturs, you should read it. There were 3 sherpas that helped the climbers, some even climbed back up to help. Its stupid they don't ention them here. They are real hereos.
I love the way the last survivor of this expedition, Marco Confortola said "Instinct" makes you want to rescue others... was he thinking that when he abandoned Ger McDonnell as ger was trying to rescue the Korean climbers, eventually succeeding but was killed in a further avalanche hours later on the descent. Or was he thinking it was "instinct" when he subsequently stole the late Ger of his heroic feat, changed the story and sold the story...
@TehAWAL I guess he saw an opportunity to make a life for himself outside of mountaineering.
For anyone interested in a proper non biased account of what happened that day, No Way Down is worth reading. In it, the author highlights that Marco Confortola was reluctant to speak with him about the events and when he eventually told his side of the story, it was unbelievable and did not add up.
The proof of this is that Ger McDonnell was post posthumously awarded the Targa D'Argenta, an ITALIAN
@bilalhidayat You can't tell me you wouldn't feel accomplished after doing something like this. There are so many people in the world, and very few accomplish anything worth mentioning. You only live once.
I wouldn't feel accomplished having to walk over dying people to summit. I'd feel more of a sense of accomplishment from being a part of the rescue mission, myself.

@VoiceOfReason1966 you better live for an hour free, than fourty years in slavery and jail.Something like that, was what a Great Greek said before Greeks fight back for Greece @ 1821.Not that relevant at the first glance, but its what you said more or less.Nowadays slavery, is 95%+ peoples life, in city, away from nature.
Making good desitions above 8000meters(25000ft), Isnt easy becuase the amount of oxygen is 3 times lower at that hight. Your brain simply doesnt get enough oxygen.
And when one climber died some people did turn around. One of the reason so many died was becuase they didnt have enough rope.
U know one of the reasons that many people die climbing K2 than mount everest because they don't have people from nepal the sherpas who are willing to risk their life for other tourists so they can get to the top of the mountains and get back. one of the other things is that we get attached to the people lifes instantly that makes us feel like we have know them since long long time. This comment is not a disrepect to the Holy Mountain K2. Everest all the way
Knuckleheads, ALL. K2? equals certain Death. and so i would ask: WHY?
lol! i'm just stupified at WHY guys feel the urge or desire to simply have to Conquer this goddamn Death Climb. i mean, come on. did you hear the part about, "it's actually harder to COME DOWN! than it is going up!!! so, logic says, after an incredible arduous, exhausting, debilitating climb to the top, you get to then experience the even MORE DIFFICULT Descent. yeah. that's what i look forward to. Lol!~
People, Thumbs up, To that Pakistani Porter, who died trying to save a guy who fell of the ridge, he didn't have to do it, He is a hero for it, my respect is with him.
@DigitalTechh he wasnt trying to save him, he was trying to recover the body. and he was a paid porter. he never would have put himself in this absurd risk if it wasnt for the egotistical white people paying him to do the job
anyway i liked the part where 2 of them died and the rest forged on ahead... IM GLAD 2 OF YOUR COMRADES DYING BEFORE YOUR EYES DIDNT SLOW YOU DOWN
hm cant believe, that K2 is much more difficult than everest, everest is almost 1000 feet higher! K2 is just more dangerous, because of higher risk of avalance!
@valkyrie1960s K2 is a much more technically demanding climb, with a far greater danger of Avalanches. It is an extremely exposed mountain getting storms much worse then Everest. Height has nothing to do with difficulty of the climb. The more difficult the more dangerous. Everest is like walking up a hill compared to K2. 1 in 3 climbers die climbing K2, 1 in 10 die climbing Everest. In fact Everest is one of the safer of the 8000ers to climb.
Using supplemental oxygen makes you dependant from your supply. If now sth unforeseen happens and you might need longer than initially planed, you're screwed.
wearing oxygen on any high altitude mountains is highly criticized by many purist climbers. Not because it taints the experience, but because it gives unwarranted confidence to climbers who may otherwise be unfit and undeserving of such a incredible journey.
Oxygen should be used for emergency purposes only, and then inexperienced climbers who use oxygen as a crutch wouldn't create accidents that need rescuing, putting more people in danger.
Im sure getting to the top of a really cold mountain is all kinds of fun,but I'll pass. They should at least tell people theres gold up there, then at least you'd have a excuse to go up there.
I respect K2 more than I respect my father

lol adamb9098. you are right, the payoff is only in peoples' heads. either you look like a dipshit for dying on a rock or you climb a rock and no one cares. the important part to remember is that this provides news stories for the networks and entertainment for the rest of us.
mrnoodleisdead 1 year ago
@mrnoodleisdead Yes let's all remain little children and be entertained by the death and misery of others.
Let's all celebrate not doing anything at all to challenge ourselves, and sit in our warm little hovels and cynically pretend that we're better than the rest of them - whilst sitting on our fat asses doing absolutely nothing.
Grow up.

bashfulbrother 1 year ago
@bashfulbrother Sounds to me like obvious projection: I've no doubt that it's people like you who're the only real folk who masturbate incessantly to get through your own sad little life.
The rest of us understand that life is for living, not cowering in fear...
But I'll never actually hope you die.
Because I'm not a childish idiot spewing hate just because I can't get off my ass and live...
cinesimonj 1 year ago
@cinesimonj First, go and educate yourself on defense mechanisms. Second, look up the term PSEUDO-intellectual. Third, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I won't bother trying to explain to you the meaning of my statements as I would have to use one or two syllable words, and you are not worth the effort. Plain and simple, the only reason these guys and women climb is to bolster their low self-esteem. Much the same as you when you try to pretend you are educated.
bashfulbrother 1 year ago
@bashfulbrother Nice projection,,kiddo.
Grow up.
cinesimonj 1 year ago
@bashfulbrother People don't climb mountains to bolster their low self-esteem, at least not any more than any other area. It's about the adrenaline rush, and pushing the limits of what one is able to do. All professional climbers are fully aware of the dangers of their expedition, especially if they are on K2.
dgtucker 1 year ago
@dgtucker I realize that. I was just giving the "genius" a hard time. I do think that on some of these climbs the goal of reaching the summit becomes all consuming at the expense of humanity. Take the climbs in Everest, there are several accounts of those in the death zone walking past people dying in front of them and they are more concerned with reaching the summit than helping their fellow climber. In that case the only motivation has to be ego and selfish concern.

@dark90ist damn who the fuck does that?
TehAWAL 7 months ago
@TehAWAL I guess he saw an opportunity to make a life for himself outside of mountaineering.
For anyone interested in a proper non biased account of what happened that day, No Way Down is worth reading. In it, the author highlights that Marco Confortola was reluctant to speak with him about the events and when he eventually told his side of the story, it was unbelievable and did not add up.
The proof of this is that Ger McDonnell was post posthumously awarded the Targa D'Argenta, an ITALIAN
dark90ist 7 months ago
mountaineering award for bravery... the Italians ignoring their own native Marco and awarding Ger instead.

Making good desitions above 8000meters(25000ft), Isnt easy becuase the amount of oxygen is 3 times lower at that hight. Your brain simply doesnt get enough oxygen.
And when one climber died some people did turn around. One of the reason so many died was becuase they didnt have enough rope.
jontetubeinabox 1 year ago
U know one of the reasons that many people die climbing K2 than mount everest because they don't have people from nepal the sherpas who are willing to risk their life for other tourists so they can get to the top of the mountains and get back. one of the other things is that we get attached to the people lifes instantly that makes us feel like we have know them since long long time. This comment is not a disrepect to the Holy Mountain K2. Everest all the way
TheTearsofheaven 1 year ago
Knuckleheads, ALL. K2? equals certain Death. and so i would ask: WHY?
lol! i'm just stupified at WHY guys feel the urge or desire to simply have to Conquer this goddamn Death Climb. i mean, come on. did you hear the part about, "it's actually harder to COME DOWN! than it is going up!!! so, logic says, after an incredible arduous, exhausting, debilitating climb to the top, you get to then experience the even MORE DIFFICULT Descent. yeah. that's what i look forward to. Lol!~

hm cant believe, that K2 is much more difficult than everest, everest is almost 1000 feet higher! K2 is just more dangerous, because of higher risk of avalance!
valkyrie1960s 1 year ago
@valkyrie1960s K2 is a much more technically demanding climb, with a far greater danger of Avalanches. It is an extremely exposed mountain getting storms much worse then Everest. Height has nothing to do with difficulty of the climb. The more difficult the more dangerous. Everest is like walking up a hill compared to K2. 1 in 3 climbers die climbing K2, 1 in 10 die climbing Everest. In fact Everest is one of the safer of the 8000ers to climb.

Using supplemental oxygen makes you dependant from your supply. If now sth unforeseen happens and you might need longer than initially planed, you're screwed.
dockaiser 1 year ago
wearing oxygen on any high altitude mountains is highly criticized by many purist climbers.
