@rudeasp: I think the question to ask is, why weren't the markets there to begin with? It's not because the people are poor. In bad neighborhoods grocery stores don't turn a profit because of theft. I used to work for a grocery store. The profits they make per item sold are actually very small compared to most other business.
Even a moderate amount of theft can shut a grocery store down.

Also, if you use roads, public schools, libraries, if you value the police, firefighters, etc. then you have excepted money from the government. Noone is completely self-sufficient in this country.

Now, I can't argue about taxes, because that's pure difference of opinion. But, personally I don't see what is so amoral about this. There have been taxes and subsidies for certain business (like farms) for years. I hope the Obamas enjoy the fruits of their labor. Maybe when this is all done, they can run a fruit and vegetable stand in Lafayette Square in DC. It would be good practical business experience for both of theman would put an end to the food deserts. I survived Carter as a kid, and NEVER thought wed see another one. In some cases, because when their families first moved to the area they weren't allowed to live in other places because of redlining. Some probably stay because they want to fix their problems instead of run away from them.

1) No, but your family and history being somewhere is a reason to stay. people have links to places--their churches, community, emotions, etc.
2) How you ask? well, if you can barely afford rent in the poor part of town, its unlikely you can afford to pay the higher rent in a safer place. You'd probably say get a job. Well, a) without a degree or training you're not likely to be well paid, and if you need to work, will you have time for school? and b) not many jobs these days.

@rudeasp: I think the question to ask is, why weren't the markets there to begin with? It's not because the people are poor. In bad neighborhoods grocery stores don't turn a profit because of theft. I used to work for a grocery store. The profits they make per item sold are actually very small compared to most other business.
Even a moderate amount of theft can shut a grocery store down.

If there are places where food stores are scarce it's probably because they're so far outside the city you could buy from farmers directly. Honestly this reminds me of the soviet union where they would place stores in retarded positions that made no economic sense.

The interesting thing is, though, that when mentioning food deserts, the White House is referring to impoverished city areas and NOT the countryside. Surely the people in those areas don't have to travel 40 miles to find a good grocery store. It seems to me that, whereas you are hindered from getting healthy food due to your location, other people are hindered due to financial limitations and also bad food habits in general.
