poor chickens you couldn't spring for a better roof .just a $5 tarp i bet there so happy under it..what about hawks flying down and snagging them no protection over them or under them.any critter and lift that cheap thing up and have lunch..here's a tip..spend some more money on your chickens and protect them better
This is a Very smartly made coop, The use of pvc is Genius !, lightweight, easy to work with and will definitely outlast wood and much cheaper. btw I like your voice :)
It's videos like this that really show off the power of YouTube. A couple people, a video camera and some software and you're suddenly educating the world on how to be more self-sufficient. No sending away for videos listed in the ads in the backs of magazines you may never come across. Thanks for taking the time and effort to put together your videos!
Absolutely, youtube has become a very powerful self-educational tool (for people who use it for that purpose of course). Kudos to you Becky and Scott for putting these together, your videos are very well-made. You are living the dream of so many of us, must have taken real courage to make the switch. Best of luck.
@nuclearspike Not to mention the fact that she is really superb at hosting the video. She really is a pleasant person, soft on the ears and pleasing to listen to. And she really explained it well. Keep up the good work young lady.
My question is how do you keep animals from digging under the coop and getting in to the chickens? I have always thought I'd run wire under the dirt so animals couldn't sneak in.
That is right! But when you dig the wire in to the ground make sure it "scoops" outward. So when say a dog digs it's going to hit wire. If the wire scoops inward (toward the pen) the dog can dig under it and scoot right into the pen.
That is a good idea. I was thinking of running the wire all the way under to the other side of the coops, making an entire floor of wire....but your idea makes better sense and saves a lot wire and money! Thanks. :)
You're welcome! I was also thinking about running wood aroundthe base of the fencing. I have a lot of old wood, but I think the animals could still dig under it. The wire underground and scooped out is probably our best bet.
running wire under the dirt will only mean u would have to put more wire under the dirt if u move the coop so i would suggest u wrap the bottom of the coop with chicken so that if u move the coop the wire get moved with it and it will keep the predators out as well also grass will be abt to stick up thru the wire so that your chickens can still scratch around and pick grass

Chicken wire only keeps in chickens..it does not keep out chicken eaters. Hardware cloth would have made a much safer coop.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the PVC coop. I like the triangle one we made after this one. It's sturdier and I can move it by myself.

What about the foxes and dogs? How do you protect the chickens from digging predators?
TurkishVanChickens 3 years ago
Coop is a clever idea, but might I suggest some diagonal braces near the corners? Also use UV stabilised PVC if you can find it.
