  • THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!! I have had my USA 62 Jazzmaster Reissue since 2008 and I had left home for about a year when I came back I noticed my Jazzmaster no longer played like it did before I left I just now tightend the neck a 8th odf a turn and hell yeah thats the guitar I remember . I used the old business card trick and just adjusted it to that and its perfect now THANKS :)

  • @dokkholiday 1/4 of a turn my bad

  • Perfect! Just what I was looking for thanks! I also have a Fernandes "The Function" guitar with the truss at the base. Would I turn clockwise to get rid of underbow with it as will?

  • @elgatobizco leftey loosey righty tighty

  • I'm having trouble finding a screwdriver that actually fits properly? I can't turn the truss rod any further with the ones I have, but none of them are getting a lot of leverage.

  • You sir, may have just saved me from a hundred dollar nightmare.

  • great video. you really seem to know your stuff

  • You rock sir. Capo and painters tape are both epic time savers.

  • Thanks Billy - adjusting my EJ Strat - copied your process and tricks (capo, etc.) - thanks

  • In this video you use the words “a good quarter of a turn”. Is a quarter of a turn considered “allot of adjustment” when it comes to adjusting a truss rod?

  • Wow, great video, thanks so much. I just ordered a neck for a Strat im putting together, and i was wondering how in the world I would adjust the truss rod, and exactly why i'd want to (my first time putting together a strat). Thanks a lot!

  • How on earth are you adjusting the neck with the strings off, doesn't make any sense, you can spend many days doing this, then the weather changes and you have to do this all over again,

the simple solution is: DON'T BUY GUITARS WHERE THE TRUS ROD ADJUSTMENT IS AT THE BODY END.

  • A very good and usefull video Thanks ;)

  • it surprises me that the only thing holding the neck on is the 4 bolts going into the maple wood, wouldnt it be more secure if the neck had 4 threaded inserts for the bolts too thread into.. i am building a guitar and i am thinking about doing this, any thoughts.

  • you should allways cross-tighten the screws, applies even here. exklamation

  • @300guitars hey billy I have another question is there other ways to get better sustain out of your guitar besides just lowering the tail piece when you buy a guitar is the neck setup to it's best or can you adjust it so you can get a better sustain out of it or anything like that I have a fender mustang a very nice sounding guitar when it has the right pickups. my strat is the same not a very good sustain the only thing I can think is maybe the neck isn't set up to it's best

  • @wipers86 What model Strat do you have? Maybe a better replacement bridge would help. If your neck is too straight with very low action the strings may not vibrate freely damping some sustain. -Billy

  • @300guitars it's a fender mustang I have a 1965 reissue from japan

  • @wipers86 Oh, ok. Sorry its a Mustang. They do not have the greatest sustain I have to say because of the bridge design. I'd say keep the action a little on the high side and use a little heavier strings. -Billy

  • @300guitars thnx for that I'll give that a try

  • you helped me awhile back on my strat.was wondering if you could help me with the bass amp,its doesnt have tubes,it humms bad, when i push the power button the speaker jumps outward and stays there, not sure if thats normal, cant hardly hear the bass for the humming, have it up on 8 and its not loud, put the bass in the basement at the church where i play, hopen you could save me from buying a new one,got it in 92, thanks.

  • what guitar pickup is that sir?

  • @se7enmikko Those are Lollar Imperial pickups. -Billy

  • excellent demo billy!

  • if i want to upgrade my guitar to set new fingerboard / neck should i need to adjust TR again ?

  • @nostalgiaholic777 Yes, I believe that you would have to re-adjust the truss rod. -Billy

  • i couldnt get the screw out of the neck so i drilled it out. i had to use a hammer and chisle to get the hacksaw blade unstuck from the neckplate. i waited a couple days to let the glue dry, but now my strings are stuck to the fretboard. i think a razor blade would do the trick, but i dont know what my four year old did with them. back to the hammer and chisle.

  • @Binglung Did you rape it when you were done? Cause that's the only thing left.

  • smart solution :). thanks

  • Nice demo , sure glad they put the truss access at the head stock on the newer fenders where it should be. But if folks got a vintage this is a great way to save time and money!!

  • Thank You for posting this video, every other one was for Stratocasters that have the truss rod bolt at the headstock. Very Helpful.

  • Very helpful. Thank you.

  • Are there any YouTube videos that show the tilt method -- i.e. where you don't actually remove the neck but just tilt it in the pocket enough to give access to the nut? I've been looking but can't find one. All I see demonstrated is the more conservative method where you remove the neck.

  • @1Doz I have not seen one. -Billy

  • Do'nt forget...

    Lefty loosey

    Righty tighty

Silly, but it helps you remember.

  • i never new this thanks a lo

    t

  • Hey can u show us how to do something else by how if u could if u could?

  • I didn't know that Sean Penn fixes the guitars ;D

  • you had me goin with that screw gun .but yur ok dude-- most of my guitars are in there 40,s vintage

  • D: I JUST REALIZED I'VE BEEN TURNING MY TRUSS ROD THE WRONG WAY D:

  • Could I use ANY straight edge to determine the condition of the neck? Thanks!!

  • @ejSignStrat As long as it's straight. Any one will do imo. -Billy

  • @300guitars Another question I have is how can I determine if the truss rod is broken? I have a Fender Stratocaster btw. Thanks!

  • @ejSignStrat If you are turning the rod adjustment and the neck is not responding then it may be broken. Also if the adjustment end falls off the threaded part of the rod. Listen for a rattle noise when tapping on the neck with your knuckles or heel of your hand. -Billy

  • @300guitars I had to remove the truss rod from the neck. It's not broken but the cylindrical part where the cross is is stuck and I cannot do something to it. Is it supposed to be like that? I noticed that there is a small part of the truss rod which does not get into the neck. I need help !!!!

  • thank you sir!!!

  • After adjusting, is it necessary to adjust the saddles again? Or doesnt the neck adjustment really affect the intonation?

  • Comment removed

  • I just did this to my new Fender Cassic Player 60´s strat and it worked great. Thanks!

You should put all the guitar adjustment tips in it´s own playlist though...

  • I did exactly what you said and the neck came out great!! Thanks for taking the time to post this..

  • Tthank you so much, it used to be a pain to do the set up to my vintage fender strat because of the neck but i am sure is going to be a lot easier now thanks again.

  • does adjusting the trust rod make the guitar sustain longer

  • Excellent video. I just bought a geddy lee jazz bass with the truss rod at the heel, and I was honestly a bit freaked out that I had to take the neck off to make adjustments. Your method makes it look easy. Thanks!

  • On my strat the neck mounting holes on the body also seems to be threaded so even if you have taken the neck off the screws cant be pulled out you have to screw them out, is this normal?

I saw its the same on the tele in the video.

  • Very helpful! Thanks a lot!

  • Hi GREAT VIDS,

I started my own guitar repair shop and i was wondering if those expensive Peterson tuners are really a needed ?

    TYVM

  • Thank you. I looked at every video about truss rods on "expertvillage" and those fuckwits didn't even show themselves doing it. Good video =)

  • @londunhill Stay away from "expertvillage" as from the videos I've watched, the guy has no idea what he is doing. He has great gear but I can't imagine playing one of his guitars with his set-up. Just my two cents.

  • lotta helpful pointers...capo, masking tape, but i have been told NEVER to use any power tools with guitar hardware! precaution maybe to ppl new to guitar maint.?

  • Hey can you make a vid for a B.C. Rich Warlock guitar???? cause i need some major help with my truss rod....nd i wanna be clear on something. can you change the truss rod???

  • My E string breaks each time, is the problem from the truss rod or the bridge??

  • @snk07 The problem comes from your picking

  • I just got an EJ Strat and it has the adjustment set up like the Tele you used here. I was trying to find how to adjust it and your explanation was perfect. Thanks so much. I am terrible with a feeler gauge, but am getting some buzzing with the low E & A strings though they seem to be set up right. Would say just raise the height of those 2 strings a bit more then the 4/64ths , add a little bow, or just live with it.

  • i know its irrelevant ,but your phone is ringing at 3:49 !!!

  • heyy billy quike question, does tross rod adjsutment have anything to do with effecting your tuning?... i noticed my strings are tuned perfectly at open notes, but when i play them on the fret board, certain notes below the 12th fret are showing up slightly sharper than they should be.... does this have to do with how my neck is angled and i need i trust rod adjustment? i have a squier classic vibe 50's stratocaster and ive had it for 3 months and recently switched from 9 gauge to 10.

  • @88lopez4music

Sounds like your innotation is off. Innotation can be adjusted/corrected via the bridge saddles. Would recommend having a guitar tech doing this for you if you're not sure how to do this. Hope this helps.

  • correct me if i'm wrong but if you take off the neck, the tenson will go away, and the neck become straight.

  • umm i have a very important question.. when you say the neck is bent and you want to adjust it using the thrust rod, does using a thrust rod bend the neck from where the fret board meets the body or does the neck get bent from some point with in the fret board.

Its a bit hard to explain i guess but no one on you tube, that i have found yet, explains specifically how the bent neck is adjusted. I guess it's like the difference between me moving my arm at my shoulder joint or moving my vertebra.

  • try using a paint can opener, the pickguard is the only thing to remove

  • such a nice video. thanks!

  • A very helpful video - thanks

  • Great capo trick!

  • I found this very helpful. I've adjusted the truss rod on a strat replica at my high school and the guitar sounds much better. no more buzz. However, I would find it more helpful if you had included which way to turn the screwdriver to under/over bow the neck. Great video!

  • You are one of the first guys I have seen that has it right !!

    Cheers !!!

  • @davey4557 Thanks..!! -Billy

  • @davey4557 Do you think its a practical way ? What happens if you have to twist a lil more the truss rod, do you have to take it off again ?

  • hey , so this was straight and you wanted it to bend backwards slightly ?

i have a strat plus 93 , with the rod on the front end , i have to turn the other way for the same result then ? [clockwise??]

  • @isitcosimblack Turn your rod right to make it tight which makes the neck straighter,.,,left to loosen to create more underbow... -Billy

  • On my Fender Strat (Mexican) i get fret buzz on the 5th/a string but im not sure what to do about it? any help appreciated. thanks.

  • @andymufc08 Hard to say but if it is just that string maybe the one saddle is too low. Maybe needs a truss rod adjustment as well... -Billy

  • @300guitars I adjusted my truss rod (thanks to your video) and its helped but i might adjust the saddle to make it better.

  • @300guitars

hi, my guitar is in the loosest way it gets and still need to be loosed what can I do?

  • @slickgokubab Great..!! I'm glad I could help. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions..!! -Billy

  • @luckitz Thank you....please feel free to cont me with any questions...!!! -Billy

  • using that capo rlly helps.

  • @MrStockholmz I know...right..? It makes the job much easier and faster. Less stressful too..!! -Billy

  • this was a big help. Thanks!

  • @Ready2SurfGuitar No problem....hit me up any time..!!! -Billy

  • Cheers :)

  • @MacFarlane92 Thank you....hit me up any time..!!!! -Billy

  • @ADOPTmeBITCH Yes...by feel. There is a certain feel or touch you develop after years of doing certain things. You cannot go by exact measurements because every guitar is different.

You have to take the neck off because you cannot get to the truss rod adjustment. It is a vintage type design. If you are careful you should have no problem with messing up the threads in the wood of the neck. If for some reason the threads get messed up there are techniques for repair..EZ..!! -Billy

  • Didn't even know how overbowed mine was! Just saved me some money from the music store!

  • @epitaph664 Happy to help..!!! When in doubt trying to work on your guitar take it to your tech though... -Billy

  • @300guitars So when you put the Straight Edge on the Fret Board and all the Frets touch the Straight Edge, that's when you know it is straight?

    Thanks. :)

  • @fredericiscool Well....yes that means that the neck is dead straight. You probably don't want it like that and probably should have a little relief so it's not so straight. -Billy

  • Hey Billy, thanks for the reply I appreciate it. I got a nice pretty standard looking tele neck on eBay so I guess I'd need whatever goes into a stock tele neck. Cheers buddy!

  • Hey Billy, great video thanks. I'm building a Telepartsa but I don't know what truss rod I should use? I belive they are numbered but I can't seem to find out what number I need. It's a Tele neck just like yours so would you mind telling me what you've fitted please?

    Regards, Mark

  • @fidelfatso Are you building the neck from scratch? Please clarify and I will try to help. -Billy

  • While you got that neck off, why not install threaded neck inserts and 4 matching machine screws? It's the way to go.

I have that same StewMac neck holder. Ugh!

  • @guitartec I was thinking about that.... -Billy

  • Hi have you worked on original floyd rose? wonder if its supposed to float or rest on the body? its not a recessed body. Kramer Focus 2000, thanks!!

  • @kissrocks45 Yes....I actually worked at the Kramer factory when they made the deal with Floyd Rose. I believe that these are designed to float and I do not remember ever seeing one that rested on the body itself. -Billy

  • I know you don't measure with an instrument but would .017 be too high? From all the other videos I've seen, most recommend .08 - .012. I'm getting this measurement from capo-ing the 1st fret and holding down the last fret.

  • @McKinoza For me personally .017 is probably too high. Other players it would be dead on....we're all different thank God..!! I like to set my neck with as little relief as possible...almost dead flat. I can live with a little buzz. Let me know if you need more info...happy to help..!! -Billy

  • is that the japanese version of jeff beck's seymour duncan telecaster released in Japan only guitar Ive seen it on Ebay its definitely a eye candy to look at..what happens if I follow your directions and the strings ending up buzzing after I put the neck back?

  • @wisesatyr72 No, I built that Tele from select parts. I love that guitar..!!

If your strings are still buzzing then you have to check your bridge height for action. You should also make sure that your frets are not worn and are even. They may need to be leveled and dressed... Let me know if this helps... -Billy

  • I have a Squier 51 - It looks like the truss rod is at the headstock?

  • @stevieVantanna Yes...then you do not need to remove the neck....lucky you!!! -Billy

  • @SkaterAnton3 Thank you very much.... Glad I could help. Let me know if you ever have any questions.. -Billy

  • how can we know the place to adjust the truss rod?my guitar esp ltd mh100 has hole near the tuner

  • using a power drill is pretty lazy dude!

  • what a really good advice :D saves tons of time for what i can see, i'll try it as soon as i get home :d thanks a lot!

  • Glad I could help!! Please let me know if you have more questions and I will be happy to answer them for you!! -Billy

  • I had to do this yesterday on my new Robert Cray Strat. I didn't think about leaving the strings on. Thanks for the capo trick.

  • Great!! I'm glad my video helped! Hit me up any time!! -Billy

  • Very helpful man! I love all your tutorials..I'm learning a lot...:D

  • I just have to say as many other have, thx a lot for the capo trick. Haven't thought of that myself, just re-stringed my main strat today and noticed now that I want to straighten the neck a bit. Usually I just do it the same time as I change the strings... :)

  • Glad I could help! Feel free to hit me up any time!! -Billy

  • it s probably because i have only metric allen keys! it should be an 1/8 key, nope?

i m gonna try to find one.

  • I'm not sure what the exact size is. Go to a hardware store and get a set. They are worth having around for other projects and repairs. Keep me posted! -Billy

  • Hi Billy,

thx again for your help so far! I have a problem : i can t find the allen key that will fit into the truss rod. Are there special fender allen keys, as i read somewhere?

    i have a strat mex 2006

  • i meant the "saddles"

  • i mean without touching the sattles on the bridge?

  • so, i can bend slightly the truss rod without touching anything else?

  • Yes. You can adjust just the rod. go a little at a time and see how it goes. Let me know your results. -Billy

  • thanks for your answer!

Do u think i could manipulate myself the truss rod without puting my guitar at risk?

  • Yes...just go very slowly 1/8 - 1/4 turn at a time. Follow the info in the video and you will be fine. I'm here if you have any more questions!! -Billy

  • hi, thank you very much for answering my question about the "break angle". Awesome!

An other question: is rattling/fret buzz normal? i have a fender strat mex (2nd hand)and the buzz sound is easily noticeable although probably not unusual, should i get used to it? could a higher string gauge solve the problem with some neck readjusting?

P.S : an internship in your workshop would be awesome!!

  • I don't think a higher string gauge is the "cure all". A good set-up is however. All guitars have a certain amount of string buzz. How much is tolerable to YOU? I tolerate more buzz than some other players because I like the neck dead straight...if I get some buzz without killing too much sustain then so be it.

Strats are a bit more difficult to deal with because of the 3 pickups. Try lowering them a bit for less pull on the strings.

Let me know if this helps! -Billy

  • what does a stuck rod mean? with the creaking or clicking? i tried to move it and it moved like...a tiny bit with a creak, what does that mean?

  • What kind of guitar? Which way did you turn the rod....clockwise (right) or counterclockwise (left)? Hit me back and I will try to help. -Billy

  • i have a Lakland Duck Dunn signature (basically a p-bass), the truss rod adjustment nut is placed in the same spot as in this telecaster...and looking up the neck towards the headstock i turned it clockwise

  • Ok, I would turn the nut counter clockwise and remove it. Then spread a little lithium grease or vaseline on the threads of the nut with something small to get into the nut. Put a little on the bottom end of the nut as well so it won't bind up. Put the nut back in and try it again. The creaking should be gone and should turn smoother now. Let me know how it goes! -Billy

  • seems to move ok now, i gave the neck a bit of back bow since it was dead straight and it seems to cured the buzz, thank you alot man

  • Keep me posted! -Billy

  • Thanks for the question! First of all tell me what kind of guitar it is. Second loosen the strings and then I would try to loosen the nut to free it up. If you can get the nut loose take it off. Then I would use some lithium grease, vaseline or even candle wax as a lubricant. Just use a tiny bit on the threads of the nut. Use something to get the lube into the threads. Try to adjust it again. If you have no luck then you may need to take it to a tech. Let me know what happens! -Billy

  • i hope this is what your asking,i can put the kapo on the 2nd frett and strum a G chord the D string will buzz,if i strum a A chord the A string will buzz, the same with the e chord,i dont know what frett its buzzing on,but it does it on the same strings no matter which frett the kapo is on,ive went all the way to the nineth frett with the same result

  • Try the straight edge to see if your neck is backbowed or underbowed. You may need to have the frets leveled and dressed.... Let me know. -Billy

  • it does fine without the kapo, the top e string buzzez just alittle without the kapo, but i could live with it,the action feels good,im just lost with the E A D string buzz on each frett with a kapo

  • Sounds like the action is a bit too low, the neck is too straight or a bit of both. There may be a twist in your neck where the high E side is less bowed than the low E side. Hard t diagnose over the internet but I think I would get a straight edge to see if your neck is straight or underbowed. Let me know. Do the E, A & D strings buzz with the capo on and then you play all the other frets with buzzing or just certain frets? -Billy

  • first thanks for the help,i backed off the rod alittle and the neck is better,i can put a kapo on each frett and get a buzzing on the top three strings,i dont think im giving you the right imformation on what the problem is,[sorry ] i did lower the bridge till it layed on the body,i hope its not the fretts,

  • How is the action now? Can you get away with raising the bridge a little? Do you get the buzzing without the capo just fretting the strings? Let me know and I will try to help.-Billy

  • thanks,im going to try the neck first, but i did notice when he tightened the rod he had a hard time turning it,i dont know how much he has worked on them,if it ends up being the fretts ILL have to get your advice, thanks for the time for teaching.

  • Just be careful turning the rod. Go slow and if you feel unsure take it to the tech. A drop of lubricant can help but you need to remove the adjustment nut. Happy to help! -Billy

  • its a fender strat, ive also noticed the bridge are saddle,it doesnt set flat on the body, you could slide a credit card under the back, its tilted forward alittle,

  • I'd say that the beck may be a little too straight or the frets need to be leveled and dressed. Either one of these or a bit of both.

You can loosen the strings and tighten the springs in the back to get the bridge to rest flat on the body. You may have to re-intonate afterward though. Let me know if this helps. -Billy

  • i had mine worked on,they got the bow out of the neck, but the strings are tighter than i would like and i have a buzz on the 3rd and 4rth frett when im using a kapo, any advise on what i could do

  • Hi there- What kind of guitar is it? The buzzing may be due to the neck being a little too straight or you may have a few high frets and they may need to be leveled and dressed. Let me know the type of guitar and I will try to help. -Billy

  • Very good video, thanks.

The straight edge method is more visual for me = better result.

  • Glad I could help!!!! -Billy

  • lol I should have watched this b4 starting... strings are everywhere...

  • @dUJARAH7 Haha! Happend excacly to me.

  • thanks heaps , very helpfull

  • how do you achieve to get the strings as low as possible, without making them buzz

  • It is a matter of having a correctly adjusted truss rod, properly leveled and dressed frets and then a good set up. There are a few parts to the equation. Is your guitar playing poorly? Can I help?? Let me know and I will try to help you my friend!! -Billy

  • Thanks! I just want to make let them down as much as possible. You know... it has a different sound then. I wanna make it sound like this: watch?v=T0lrs9iP7hU

  • To shred t you do need low action. The guitarist in that video clip you sent is using an effect however. I'm sure you knew that but I just want to be clear so my answers are effective to help you.

So as I said as far as action you need to have the frets right, neck right and a good set-up. That is the foundation of a good playing guitar.

Please feel free to ask more questions if you like!! -Billy

  • Thanks for the help mate! Well...i have seen a lot of videos about this, and you know everybody says everything. One says that 'you should rasp the buzzing frets with a file', the other 'dont do that thats bullshit, you will ruin your guitar', one says you should have a little hollow between the 1st and 12th fret, the other says that it should be totally flat. Whats the best in your opinion?

  • I do not want to sound ambiguous but in my opinion what's best is what works best for each individual guitar! Every guitar is different. However as a general rule I like to have my neck as straight as possible and then adjust the action height accordingly. I go for the fast "feel" first and then see what the buzz situation is like. Works for me. I can tell you to get a tech if you do not have fret work (filing, rasping, etc) experience. Let me know if this helps..hi me up!! -Billy

  • Nah i never did somehting like that. But you could give a good tip, how to make the neck well aligned to the body, i would be thankful for it. I think i can adjust the tross rod then to the string tension, but i am not sure about the frets. Should i rasp the buzzy ones?

  • I would not try that. If you are going to level (rasp) the frets you have to do them all so they are all level. It is tricky to do just one or two. I would take it to a tech if you have no experience so the job is performed properly and your guitar plays at it best. Set-ups and tweaks are easy. When you get into frets you need the experience. -Billy

  • Yeah but in my country guitar techs are mountebanks. They dont know nothing about this stuff. I took it once into a store( i had to travel to another city 100km-s from mine to find one ), i paid about 50 boxes in USD and it ruined my guitar neck, so it was worse than before. I repaired it after my intuitive skills , now its better, but its far from the best.

  • If you use a straight edge with the strings off the guitar adjust the neck so it is as perfectly straight as you can. Then you will find the frets that are high or low. If there are a few that are high then you can use the plastic end of a screwdriver or plastic fretting hammer (if you have one) to "re-seat" the high frets. This can happen sometimes. If this is the case, tap down the high frets, re-string and see what you have. Where are you on the map? -Billy

  • thanks alot

  • You are welcome!! -Billy

  • The capo was brilliant! great video....thanks!

  • No problem. Glad I could help. Let me know if you have any further questions!! -Billy

  • Man that capo idea is great!! Thanks, I'm definately going to use that.

  • Great, thanks!! Glad I could help. Please let me know if you have any questions and I will help you out!! -Billy
