There are Great Whites at Mavs, massive kelp, and the psychological and physical horror of 50 degree water. Try paddling out in a 5 mil wetsuit. Yet, wannabes from all over are crowding the waves looking to prove themselves.I'm amazed that people don't die everyday Mavs is happenin.

The paddle out is rigorous. And so is fighting the current. That alone keeps surfers with less experience out of the lineup. The reason why there aren't as many deaths at Mav's is because it was just discovered pretty recently. You now have rescue teams and guys on jet skiis ready to put it all on the line to save your ass. Pipe, if i'm not mistaken has been surfed as early as the 60's. No leashes, no skiis, and no one to know if you drowned or got scrubbed to death.

Mavericks is big but Pipeline is much heavier...... It is a thick solid funnelling pit over shallow reef.......In winter The north shore is the ultimate proving ground and that wont change.... But surfing has gone to a new level with Teahopuu guys nothing will get heavier than chopes.

Mavericks is way gnarlier than pipe. The waves are wayyyyyyyy bigger, you have to wear a 5mm wetsuit that is riduculously hard to surf in, the inside is sketchier than the sand beaches in hawaii, and there are some big fish up there!

@twokool1975 : I would have to agree Mavs is pretty gnarly too. Rocks I assume would have to make up for Pipe's reef making it arguably gnarlier than Waimea. BUT, Mav's breaks over deep water, and paddling out is a bitch. A double/triple-overhead peak pounding over a shallow reef makes Mavs look like A blanket and warm milk. Plus Pipe is SOOO easy to paddle out to. Which is why you have kooks who only get in the way, racking up death rates. Hence, Da Hui.
