Second thing I want to say is this. Jordan was never upset in the playoffs. The teams he lost to he was supposed to lose to. He upset more teams than he lost to. Even when his team sucked. Magic Johnson was upset twice in the 80's by the Houston Rockets. He lost 4 out of 5 finals during a time when his team was almost always the better team. Bird IMHO was better all around.
Want to point out that Magic's offensive skills are severely underrated in the memories of fans due to his passing. He had a REAL back to the basket game and a solid jumpshot. He could hit a hook over damn near anyone. He had to be guarded by tall SFs, he was too tall for PGs and too quick for tweener 4s like Xman. He could reverse spin to the left off of almost any F and make his way right to the rim. Imo, he could've EASILY avg'd 25 a year if he wasn't so conscious about passing.
Jordan's Bulls never had to beat a team that will be considered historically great. Magics Lakers had to beat teams considered historically great in the Celtics and Sixers, and Birds Celtics had to contend with those same Sixers and rhe Lakers.
best team the bulls had to beat were the utah jazz, who will never be confused with any historicsally great teams.
Good opinions. Bird and Magic were better team players. But MJ was a one man offense. I would say Bird and Magic were better but MJ had the one thing they didnt. Defense. MJs defense was leagues better than Birds and Magic.
1) MJ
2) Bird
3) Magic
Bird and Magic were on another level than any superstar, but I still say Jordan was one level higher.
Individual performance by Jordan is unmatched. You talk about Birds ability to score at will. Jordan could score at will. These highlights should also show Jordans defense. Which is sick.
Look guys these highlights show Birds and Magics amazing skill and flash. They also had numerous HOF's to do that with. Jordans highlights are somewhat repetetive but you cant highlight an entire game of dismantling the 86 celtics scoring 63 points or the detroit pistons.
funny thing is that Jordan never ever won a series against the celtics when they had their frontline of McHale, Bird and Parish.. he may have scored that many points and all the credit to him but that celtics had the most balanced attack
i think michael jordan is one of the greatest becuz he gets trust from his teamates. his team trust him to take the last shot of the game. to be the greatest you need respect like that
Don't ya mean Bird, both Magic and Jordan have commented that with the game on the line there is noone better than Bird "Bird calling for the ball, well everyone in the stadium knows who the ball is going to anyway, it's one thing to know where it's going it's another thing to stop it" and "you know when the there is seconds on the clock and the game is close, he is going to win that game. Bird is the best clutch player ever
(re: Jordan) his team trust him to take the last shot of the game. to be the greatest you need respect like that
---
That's because Pippen and Grant were scared in those situations. Note how both of them passed the ball like a hot potato at the end of Gm6 in the 93 Finals. Jordan once told a reporter in 1993 that he got "tired of carrying Scottie & Horace when their asses got tight late in gms." ESPN played the tape during an interview w/ Pip and Scottie was clearly irritated by it.
fuck out of here nobody has taken the torch from jordan yet...nobody is worthy enough until they surpass him just like jordan surpassed bird and magic
You pretty much echoed the same criticisms Bird faced the first time he came into the league. People doubted him b/c he couldn't jump high, run fast, and doesn't have an athletic build. Which is true. But Bird is a basketball genius. If you know anything about basketball, you'd know that the mind is the most powerful weapon on the court. Just watch Larry dominate the more athletic Blazers in his last season in this game (check out his stats): watch?v=4FlFwFrMu0w
What a freakin piece of shit. Lets see. Take a totally spoiled, egocentric vainglorious million dollar athlete, add at least 10,000 illicit sexual trysts, and you have Magic AIDS BOY Johnson. Oh, and dont forget, lets pity him for something that was completely his own fault! He should be giving every penny hes got to charity, and living in a freakin shelter!!
magic would win because he knows that bird can't dunk good so he wont worry about inside so magic would play tight and force bird to take a hard shot.Magic can dunk and shoot so magic has a good advantadge on bird.but bird is better at passing but he cant use that skill 1on1. Even though all that i still say it would be great match.
they try to make these guys seem like heroes but they weren't. When you talk about larry, mike, and magic your talking about affairs, spousal abuse, gambling addiction, etc.
The 3 best players ever... don't try to argue about who's the best, they all have unlimited potentiel.

Actually, u can tell by their highlights..Look at magics. All his are with him incorporating his teammates. most of MJs are with him shooting..He was the ultimate winner, but he didnt get his teammated involved nearly enough..He averaged 26 shots a game..Top 5 in NBA history..His teamates averaged 2 to 3 shots a game individually...
idiot. your stats are as stupid as you are. "his teamates averaged 2 to 3 shots a game" LOL what a fuckin jackass. Jordan is the g.o.a.t, bird and magic are sick though.
its more physical because of the slack on the refs part...back then you cuoldnt check the man you were holding nearly as much....it was a lot esier for the offensive player
Do you actually know something about basketball?? It was easier then for the offensive player?? You can't do anything on defense nowadays, which is what makes it easier NOW for the offensive player.
The game was esier back then....it was dominated by a handful of good players and the rest were garbage....of course their stats are gona be good...go play some scrubs and you'll win 7-0 skunk...come play me and youl look like one of the scrubs i just mentioned. People actually have to earn their points now....if magic or bird in their prime played now they would be good but they wouldnt be close to what they were..and Kobe is probably the best scorer that will ever play.
lol chamerlain was trash..watch his games...all he could do was dunk...and the people he played against was on average of like 6-7 6-8...GARBAGE
1. Kobo 2. Shaq 3. Jordan 4. Iverson
the game was a lot less of a contact game back in the day...all the old school players would have more trouble if they played now...there was a whole scotty pippin interview about that.
"the game was a lot less of a contact game back in the day"
This pretty much destroyed your credibility. A clothesline in mid-air on a fastbreak back in the 80's is worth only two freethrows w/o any flagrant, ejection, suspension, or fine. Nowadays players would get a technical just by smiling from the bench (Tim Duncan). Commentators today are quick to point out that today's flagrant are just "love touches" back in the 80's.
This is when the NBA was watchable. Today... a team will be down by 20 points and a guy will make a dunk and do some dance back down the court! All a bunch of hip hop BS. Bird. Magic. MJ. If it was not for those 3 players, The NBA would have tanked years ago.
It wasn't just Bird, Magic, and Jordan's talent, b-ball IQ, or work ethic--their will to win remains unmatched. When they said they'd win, you really believed them. A starting lineup with these three would kill everyone. Screw today's "more athletic" stars--all they know are dunks and scoring binges and they can't even defend against the pick-and-roll. My generation's been cheated of real b-ball.
No doubt, Magic and M.J as guards, forwards would be Bird and Malone(I would take Malone over Barkley, but can't argue with either one of them, and center would be Jabbar, Russell, or Chamberlain. Shaq and Hakeem round out the top 5 centers of all-time. However, you can't put Shaq and Hakeem above those other 3. Duncan might take the place of Malone and Barkley when it's all said and done !!! What do you think ??
in every discussion that i read about all-time greatest team, magic(pg)mj(sg)& bird(sf) are unanimous. only the center & pf position have diff names that appear.
The All Time Team is obvious if you ask me. Erving and Bird cannot both be in the starting five as they're both essentially small forwards. Therefore the team would be (C) Wilt Chamberlain (PF) Karl Malone (SF) Larry Bird (SG) Michael Jordan (PG) Magic Johnson. You can argue the power forward role as much as you like but there has never been anyone as good as Malone in this position (although Kareem could play this position on the all time team and make them even better).
Thee only problem with this list of first and second team all-time nba is the forward positions. Dr. J and Larry Bird both can't start. You would be starting two small forwards with the absence of a true power forward. Thus "The Dr." would have to come off the bench. The power forward position is a hard one to fill.
im a larry legend fan and amen to your line-up. can't just drop russel coz he plays center during his time. at pf (most ring) the perfect compliment to wilt (a scorer)...my all-time 2nd team: jabbar-pettit-dr.j-robertson-west.
No player ever reinvented his ENTIRE game like MJ did after he came back the first time, and for that he is the greatest. Don't get me wrong, Bird is my favorite player of all time, and Magic is definitely #2, but MJ was the best. Only one of the three to win a defensive player of the year award, developed that infallable 18 foot jumper from '96 on...MJ all the way.
Interesting debate. I don't think it's possible to argue against Jordan as the best player ever. He perfected every aspect of the game. But I do think Magic and Bird are the 2 most UNIQUE players ever. Two 6'9" players who thought and saw the floor like pure point guards. That's what sets them apart: the way they THOUGHT the game.
He played almost all positions.I saw him play 2-guard against sidney moncrief and the bucks in 84,lewis lloyd and the rockets in 86. Played#5 against Utah and Mark eaton in 88..bird wore goggles for a few games back then.Bird was really a small forward.Cedric Maxwell was the starting power forward before he got injured in midseason of 85,kevin mchale, who was the 6th man, became a starter.Bird only played power forward when kevin gamble was inserted in the starting lineup some time in 91.
> Wilt chamberlin ( best centre of all time), > Larry Bird (best power foward of all time), > Julius erving (Best small foward of all time), > Michael Jordan (Best Shooting Guard Ever) HANDS DOWN!, > Magic Johnson (Best point guard ever) HANDS DOWN!

Assorted opinions I have:
1a) MJ wasn't tested as much in the 90s as Mag/Larry were in the 80s.
1b) Not MJ's fault, he prob would've won 1 or more in the 80s w/ his 90s team, they were good enough to hang.
2a) MJ might've been better than the other two in totality
2b) If 2a is true, I still don't think the degree of sep betw. he and Mag/Larry is as big as the media portrays it.
3) All 3 of them are on the same plane, who's > is largely a moot point, they all were hd/shlders > everyone esle

Do you actually know something about basketball?? It was easier then for the offensive player?? You can't do anything on defense nowadays, which is what makes it easier NOW for the offensive player.
csanchez29 4 years ago
Kobe?? What the hell, fantastic player but not even close to the league of these guys. That just proves your age.
5studio54 4 years ago
The game was esier back then....it was dominated by a handful of good players and the rest were garbage....of course their stats are gona be good...go play some scrubs and you'll win 7-0 skunk...come play me and youl look like one of the scrubs i just mentioned. People actually have to earn their points now....if magic or bird in their prime played now they would be good but they wouldnt be close to what they were..and Kobe is probably the best scorer that will ever play.
Stick to kangaroos

lol chamerlain was trash..watch his games...all he could do was dunk...and the people he played against was on average of like 6-7 6-8...GARBAGE
1. Kobo 2. Shaq 3. Jordan 4. Iverson
the game was a lot less of a contact game back in the day...all the old school players would have more trouble if they played now...there was a whole scotty pippin interview about that.
zRoandBiggie 4 years ago

1980 on... The best...
1. MJ
2. Bird
3. Magic
4. Kobe
5. SHACK
You guys can fill in the rest...
goody2shoes11 4 years ago

What do you think ??

in every discussion that i read about all-time greatest team, magic(pg)mj(sg)& bird(sf) are unanimous. only the center & pf position have diff names that appear.
schnooks17 5 years ago
The All Time Team is obvious if you ask me. Erving and Bird cannot both be in the starting five as they're both essentially small forwards. Therefore the team would be (C) Wilt Chamberlain (PF) Karl Malone (SF) Larry Bird (SG) Michael Jordan (PG) Magic Johnson. You can argue the power forward role as much as you like but there has never been anyone as good as Malone in this position (although Kareem could play this position on the all time team and make them even better).
rugratbob 5 years ago
Kareem was taller than Wilt and he was less athletic. I'd put him at C and shift Wilt to PF
Jackpwnz 5 years ago
That would come close to it dude.. but id probably favour Shaq, just coz he's a Human Wrecking Machine.. But yep Wilts 1 or 2..
0900utube 5 years ago
the nba first team of all time is: F- Julius Erving; F- Larry Bird; C- Wilt Chamberlain; G- Michael Jordan; G- Earvin "Magic" Johnson
all time nba 2nd team is: F- John Havliceck; F- Rick Barry; C- Bill Russell; G- Bob Cousy; G- Oscar Robertson
rrTale 5 years ago
Thee only problem with this list of first and second team all-time nba is the forward positions. Dr. J and Larry Bird both can't start. You would be starting two small forwards with the absence of a true power forward. Thus "The Dr." would have to come off the bench. The power forward position is a hard one to fill.
blackmoon32 5 years ago
i didnt make this up, its an established list and it puts the of them in the same 1st team, if u want i can send u the link

im a larry legend fan and amen to your line-up. can't just drop russel coz he plays center during his time. at pf (most ring) the perfect compliment to wilt (a scorer)...my all-time 2nd team: jabbar-pettit-dr.j-robertson-west.
schnooks17 5 years ago
I'd replace pettit. Maybe with Barkley, Malone, Rodman, or maybe even KG.

Those three are the Holy Trinity of basketball. You can't possibly rank Magic, MJ, and Bird.
broaddusmarines 5 years ago
out of the 3, jordan is the best, but don't take it from me, ask magic and larry bird themselves :P
Smeagollum86 5 years ago
No player ever reinvented his ENTIRE game like MJ did after he came back the first time, and for that he is the greatest. Don't get me wrong, Bird is my favorite player of all time, and Magic is definitely #2, but MJ was the best. Only one of the three to win a defensive player of the year award, developed that infallable 18 foot jumper from '96 on...MJ all the way.
IHeartOverTheTop 5 years ago
Interesting debate. I don't think it's possible to argue against Jordan as the best player ever. He perfected every aspect of the game. But I do think Magic and Bird are the 2 most UNIQUE players ever. Two 6'9" players who thought and saw the floor like pure point guards. That's what sets them apart: the way they THOUGHT the game.
Jmill32 5 years ago
Man you've gotta love that MJ push off on Bryon Russell, biggest BS game I've watched in my entire life.
byu1984 5 years ago
No he was both

He played PF when he had to.
Jackpwnz 5 years ago
He played almost all positions.I saw him play 2-guard against sidney moncrief and the bucks in 84,lewis lloyd and the rockets in 86. Played#5 against Utah and Mark eaton in 88..bird wore goggles for a few games back then.Bird was really a small forward.Cedric Maxwell was the starting power forward before he got injured in midseason of 85,kevin mchale, who was the 6th man, became a starter.Bird only played power forward when kevin gamble was inserted in the starting lineup some time in 91.
