I don't think there was a definitive answer to that question... I couldn't even come up with an answer! I don't associate "fried" with drunkeness... Maybe "poached eggs" could've worked....

Pickled was what I had guessed, as the audience did. Gene thought fried was definitve, but I still think picked is better.

Some of these are harder to get now, because I can't remember what coloquilisms were in the 70's and which were newer.

I don't think it was shattered. Just burned out. I think there was an episode, or maybe a few episodes, that had a burned out light on the sign.
