In a way war it self is cowardly. Its the result of men having to little bravery to master their own egos and the result is sending their brethren to die.

Except they were, up close, killing eachother. Witnessing more of the impact of their decisions. Many who set of bombs are grenades kill many at once, but aren't forced to see their opponent die before them, and therefore don't feel that same pain and inner torture.

I didnt say that they stood by and just watched. You miss my point. To kill people because you are ordered to isnt real bravery. To stand up against such orders and instead ask yourself why you would do such a thing is real bravery. This whole "oh im so brave i hack n smash people close up" isnt brave its just loosing yourself to animalistic impulses. Its easy to look at old warfare and see it as brave and honourable.

But i really think that most of the people fighting in wars were just as afraid as any other bloke. Its just that they were more brainwashed and ignorant etc and had more pressure on them from their lords and not to mention a whole army. I think fear of punishment (both from your leader and by a god) drove them to fight. Or money. But ofcourse there were these "brave" men that were so accustomed to slaughter that they didnt mind. But thats not beeing brave, its just brainwashing and brutality.

You are under the misunderstanding that I think war was brave. I simply said it wasn't *as* cowardly, but all war is cowardly. Through strength is not found is succumbing to ones violent desires, or to oppression. I agree with pretty much everything you've said.
