@shinysynthcity I think you've entirely imagined the whole thing. It's amazing what people sometimes think they've seen. I hope no poor bastard defendant is ever dependent on your observational talents as a witness in a serious criminal case!
@shinysynthcity liked your comment better that the one who rubbished you .. [best bit of the clip!] ..they are probably killing themselves laughing cause it's all mime work .. & Mick does look over at Rob, hey? ..good observation!
@tommyboynude if you listen to the last album he did with them"Gentlemen Take Polaroids"you dont here that much of his guitar work,so i think that really annoyed him-he was getting pushed aside-so he took off to California i think-i believe he now lives in Costa Rica now were he is an expert on the birds of that region-the feathered variety- and has written books on them-he has also played guitar for sinead o'connor and gary numan
David, you're MORE fucking BEAUTIFUL than 100 fucking Peter Murphys put together!!!... And at 51 you STILL look FABULOUS ( unlike Peter Murphy who's certainly NOT aged gracefully at all!!!...) He CAN'T "hold a candle" to you David!!!
I never get tired of old Japan - so original & i've followed all of their careers over the yrs and it has never gotten old (and Sylvian is, indeed, the SHEX!)
My God!!! Can a creature SCREAM "FUCK ME" without saying a word the way David Sylvian does!!! This boy was so fucking STUNNING back then it boggles my mind every-fucking-time!!! That LUSCIOUS thick hair!!! If David Sylvian and Peter Murphy could fucking be CLONED together it'd be the MOST INCREDIBLE thing on the fucking GALAXY!!! I'd be SNATCHING that HYBRID-CLONE and fucking it til it DISINTIGRATED!!! No shit!!! I'm a fucking FREAK for both David and Peter Murphy!!! Two FUCKING-LICIOUS lads!!!
Your sheer enthusiasm brought a big smile to my face and I couldn't help but wonder what David would think if he saw this comment. I'd be willing to bet he'd laugh out loud.
I don't know a whole lot about David the way I do about Peter Murphy.... But, I would HOPE that he fucking has a "sense of humor" !!! Anyway, he was fucking MAGNIFICENT in the Japan days!!!
someone should post all the first 3 lps on video ... i love stateline, love is infectious, sometimes (i feel so low), the unconventional, television. and the list goes on
They only decided to spilt after the Glasgow concert. I was at the Edinburgh (Playhouse) concert which was the following night, and nobody was talking about them splitting up, only knew when the newspapers carried the story a few days later, hence being called a Farewell tour.
As for David's voice, it didn't change, only the music changed to a melodic sound.
still listen to all their music 'after all these years'
@weegordon48 The only reason the Sons of pioneers tour took place at all, was so that Karn, Jansen & Barbieri could make some decent money prior 2 the band splitting, so it was most definitely a farewell tour. Btw, those 3 were never paid anywhere near what they'd originally been promised. According 2 Karn & I'm inclined 2 believe him, the only band member 2 make any real money from Japan was Sylvian, & the most money the other 3 ever earnt from Japan came from sales of the Oil on canvas video.
This sounds totally different from the other Japan's songs I have heard. This is more rock 'n' roll as opposed to theirusual oriental-jazz flavoured sound. But this sounds interesting.
wow! never thought i would find this one here! i bow before you, thank you so much for sharing.
i find it so interesting how his look changed somehow immediately, he wears the same outfit like on the "quiet life" record cover but his voice is so like the early japan... i love it.
Thanks for sharing this vintage Japan with me. Love this song so much, also adore "Obscure Alternatives" and "Transmission". evokes blissful memories. Thanks again for this tribute to Japan:)
Honestly, moodyb, not to be too soppy, but I heart you...fantastic to see this and all of the other silver and gold that you search out! Thanks for taking the time.
Cheers, thanx. Did Rob Dean leave the band? If so, do you know when, and did David Sylvian take over on guitar? I have this album plus "Exorcising Ghosts" and "Oil on Canvas"....only four are credited on "ghosts" and guitar is done by Masami Tsuchiya on "oil". (p.s. did u know David and Steve are brothers, real last name is Batt?)
@turnbs always a four piece with guests.masami was amazing live ,but not an original member.c'mon.sakamoto contributed but not a member.only 4 with japan.
@realtwinlord what do you mean 4? It was a 5 member band. Rob Dean was the original guitarist and there from the beginning. He wasn't a guest. Just because he left before the last album doesn't mean he should be forgotten about.
@fiendwithoutaface66 my mistake.i tend to seperate the first two from the rest too easily.i have much respect for rob's input, believe me.5 piece so.4 piece later.rhodesia moves me.communist china too.peace and love.

Japans first two albums are under rated. Great vid but bad hair.

Quiet Life image with NY Dolls sound, rare find. Great to see. Also a bit of early 'greebo' with the radio / tv-esq transmission in the middle break.

Shame this is a mime, given how his voice changed, making the music anachronistic to the video.
However, i love the early works of the band as much as the later, especially this song, Stateline, Suburban Love- they were just a great great band.

Rob left the band just before they recorded "The Art of Parties" single.
Masami was a Guest artist for the "Sons of Pioneers" farewell tour, hence the credit on "Oil".
Yes indeed, Mick also changed his last name...
