  • Japans first two albums are under rated. Great vid but bad hair.

  • Why the FUCK did he stop singing like this, I'll never know.

  • 很難想象他短髮時依然用這強調唱automatic gun~

    還不錯,哈!

  • Thankou for posting his voice must have changed after this then nice

  • I always go around town playing this. And 'Transmission'.

  • mick, rip....

  • Japan deserves the title of best band and singer of the late 70's and early 80's

  • does anyone know what bass karn is playing on this video? the neck looks like an early Wal Pro but cant make out the body

  • thanks for posting this, may god bless!

  • @1:08 - 1:12

    He laughs!

(and you can see Rob + Mick look at each other as if to say, "wtf??")

  • @shinysynthcity I think you've entirely imagined the whole thing. It's amazing what people sometimes think they've seen. I hope no poor bastard defendant is ever dependent on your observational talents as a witness in a serious criminal case!

  • @shinysynthcity liked your comment better that the one who rubbished you .. [best bit of the clip!] ..they are probably killing themselves laughing cause it's all mime work .. & Mick does look over at Rob, hey? ..good observation!

  • New York Dolls meets Roxy Music

  • Quiet Life image with NY Dolls sound, rare find. Great to see. Also a bit of early 'greebo' with the radio / tv-esq transmission in the middle break.

  • an evolution from glam rock to new wave...great video

  • Fun Fakt: Sylvian spend almost the entire budget ($2000) for the Quiet Life cover on the red jacket he's wearing here.

  • sylvian is the most underrated star. he is my favorite singer of all..

  • Damn cool band

  • why Rob Dean left the band?

  • @tommyboynude if you listen to the last album he did with them"Gentlemen Take Polaroids"you dont here that much of his guitar work,so i think that really annoyed him-he was getting pushed aside-so he took off to California i think-i believe he now lives in Costa Rica now were he is an expert on the birds of that region-the feathered variety- and has written books on them-he has also played guitar for sinead o'connor and gary numan

  • You want to find the footage they were taking at Victoria's THE VENUE show during the Polaroids Tour... fantastic night....

  • Dvid Bowie , springs to mind Sylvian guy.

  • So ahead of their time. LOVE these guys forever!!!

  • clearly playback but still looks good..

  • Playback? I think video and audio are just not sync.

  • @discobanana1 nah it's the studio version for sure

  • David, you're MORE fucking BEAUTIFUL than 100 fucking Peter Murphys put together!!!... And at 51 you STILL look FABULOUS ( unlike Peter Murphy who's certainly NOT aged gracefully at all!!!...) He CAN'T "hold a candle" to you David!!!

  • ok calm down and have a cold shower!

  • I never get tired of old Japan - so original & i've followed all of their careers over the yrs and it has never gotten old (and Sylvian is, indeed, the SHEX!)

i agree w/ the comments below

  • My God!!! Can a creature SCREAM "FUCK ME" without saying a word the way David Sylvian does!!! This boy was so fucking STUNNING back then it boggles my mind every-fucking-time!!! That LUSCIOUS thick hair!!! If David Sylvian and Peter Murphy could fucking be CLONED together it'd be the MOST INCREDIBLE thing on the fucking GALAXY!!! I'd be SNATCHING that HYBRID-CLONE and fucking it til it DISINTIGRATED!!! No shit!!! I'm a fucking FREAK for both David and Peter Murphy!!! Two FUCKING-LICIOUS lads!!!

  • Your sheer enthusiasm brought a big smile to my face and I couldn't help but wonder what David would think if he saw this comment. I'd be willing to bet he'd laugh out loud.

  • I don't know a whole lot about David the way I do about Peter Murphy.... But, I would HOPE that he fucking has a "sense of humor" !!! Anyway, he was fucking MAGNIFICENT in the Japan days!!!

  • I see this "Kahn" mistake in all sorts of postings...it's just striking me. Explain, please.

  • Fuckin Hot!!!!! mick kahn, david them all.....

  • A still deep-rooted fan is in Japan.

I am a big fan from old times.

I am glad to see the video clip.

  • He's wearing the same tie as he wore on the cover of quiet life.......i always wanted that tie.

  • Shame this is a mime, given how his voice changed, making the music anachronistic to the video.

However, i love the early works of the band as much as the later, especially this song, Stateline, Suburban Love- they were just a great great band.

  • someone should post all the first 3 lps on video ... i love stateline, love is infectious, sometimes (i feel so low), the unconventional, television. and the list goes on

  • Just amazing. The best David ever looked in the early days.

  • the new wave - glamour period of japan ^^

  • love JAPAN!! oxoxoo

  • Sons of Poneers wasn't the farewell tour.

They only decided to spilt after the Glasgow concert. I was at the Edinburgh (Playhouse) concert which was the following night, and nobody was talking about them splitting up, only knew when the newspapers carried the story a few days later, hence being called a Farewell tour.

As for David's voice, it didn't change, only the music changed to a melodic sound.

still listen to all their music 'after all these years'

  • @weegordon48 The only reason the Sons of pioneers tour took place at all, was so that Karn, Jansen & Barbieri could make some decent money prior 2 the band splitting, so it was most definitely a farewell tour. Btw, those 3 were never paid anywhere near what they'd originally been promised. According 2 Karn & I'm inclined 2 believe him, the only band member 2 make any real money from Japan was Sylvian, & the most money the other 3 ever earnt from Japan came from sales of the Oil on canvas video.

  • This sounds totally different from the other Japan's songs I have heard. This is more rock 'n' roll as opposed to theirusual oriental-jazz flavoured sound. But this sounds interesting.

  • lol total n00b to Japan

  • I know, I just discovered them tonight. They seemed to make a big transformation into New wave a few years after this.

  • wow! never thought i would find this one here! i bow before you, thank you so much for sharing.

i find it so interesting how his look changed somehow immediately, he wears the same outfit like on the "quiet life" record cover but his voice is so like the early japan... i love it.

his voice change was quite a phenomenon for me.

  • Sylvian is the absolute epitome of cool here. Much better stage presence than Oil On Canvas where if i recall he hardly moves an inch.

  • @Twonionmaster doing his bryan ferry and bowie that's all.now he becomes himself.underrated for sure.genius,yes.quiet life is amazing.

  • thanks for posting this, may god bless you and youtube!

  • @richie649 YES- good call... may GOD Bless youtube. May the LORD shine down upon the YouTube. Amen

  • Thanks for the video. What a gem! =)

  • Wow!

such a lucky to have this Man named

Chris C. who has shared his unvaluable material with US!

I like this song ... and it's so good to

remember this old good days :-)

So Chris ... once again ...

Thanks from the Bottom of my Heart!

    and Please ...

i'm waiting for the other two songs ..he,he!

  • I love the fact that Sylvian is laughing throughout this - it's rare to see him look happy or even slightly amused on the stage...

  • This is indeed wonderful!! Thank you moodyb, you are the greatest youtuber! :)

  • This is indeed wonderful!! Thank you moodyb, you are the greatest youtuber! :)

  • Thanks for sharing this vintage Japan with me. Love this song so much, also adore "Obscure Alternatives" and "Transmission". evokes blissful memories. Thanks again for this tribute to Japan:)

  • Honestly, moodyb, not to be too soppy, but I heart you...fantastic to see this and all of the other silver and gold that you search out! Thanks for taking the time.

  • Holy cow...this is a rare find! Thanks for sharing, Chris :). You ARE the best, you do know that!

  • Aww shucks! (((Red Faced))) Thank you!

I will try to add the other two songs from this appearance when I have some time...

  • I always thought Japan were a four piece. Who's the fifth member?

  • That would be Rob Dean on guitar

  • Cheers, thanx. Did Rob Dean leave the band? If so, do you know when, and did David Sylvian take over on guitar? I have this album plus "Exorcising Ghosts" and "Oil on Canvas"....only four are credited on "ghosts" and guitar is done by Masami Tsuchiya on "oil". (p.s. did u know David and Steve are brothers, real last name is Batt?)

  • Rob left the band just before they recorded "The Art of Parties" single.

Masami was a Guest artist for the "Sons of Pioneers" farewell tour, hence the credit on "Oil".

Yes indeed, Mick also changed his last name...

  • @turnbs always a four piece with guests.masami was amazing live ,but not an original member.c'mon.sakamoto contributed but not a member.only 4 with japan.

  • @realtwinlord what do you mean 4? It was a 5 member band. Rob Dean was the original guitarist and there from the beginning. He wasn't a guest. Just because he left before the last album doesn't mean he should be forgotten about.

  • @fiendwithoutaface66 my mistake.i tend to seperate the first two from the rest too easily.i have much respect for rob's input, believe me.5 piece so.4 piece later.rhodesia moves me.communist china too.peace and love.

  • @fiendwithoutaface66 my mistake.i tend to seperate the first two from the rest too easily.i have much respect for rob's input, believe me.5 piece so.4 piece later.rhodesia moves me.communist china too.peace and love.

  • @fiendwithoutaface66 you're dead right.i tend to seperate the first two from the rest for some reason.rob's guitars were amazing.rhodesia kills me.rob dean was great.5 piece originally.became 4.became 1.

  • @realtwinlord Masami was pretty sloppy and over showman like live. It amazes me he gets mention above Rob Dean.
