Youtube demo skews young. They can't believe it no matter how many 40 yr olds try to inform them that it was INDEED the case.

  • I Like Dave & the gang

But pride comes before a fall,

& they were NOT the best show that Day

(though my fav band at the beginnig of the Day)

Ozzy was better, Judas Priest was, Scorpions(professionals) were of course

even Motley crew was better than Van halen that day, Dave was Really drunk,

Not that they sucked, but for 1.5 million, I'd of felt Jipped if I was the Steve Wozniak

    jus sayin

  • I was hanging on to the monitors in front all day, SCORPS F"N ROCKED !!! Van Headache and their flying saucer sucked !

  • Van Halen isnt just the best rock and roll party band of all time, its a way of fuckin life!

  • I saw the Scorps that night....they killed !!!! Love the Zoo!!!!

  • $17k per minute ??? I want THAT job!!!! Imagine how much they would be paid today on those figures???? Dave came back from the Amazon, with black toenails he couldnt work out what was wrong, turns out it was compressed dirt !!! How do you spell relief??? O-N-E-&-A-H-A-L-F-M-I-L-L-I-O-N!!!!!!

  • The Scorpions were the best band that night by far.

  • Van Halen sucked ass that day...Scorps stole the show hands down.

  • @butchgriggs2 Van halen didnt do a very professional show, I agree Scorps were better & I started Liking them better after that show, I wasnt as big of an Ozzy fan as Van halen before that day either, But I felt ozzy's performan was top knotch & maybe even better than scorps

Judas priest was good too, Dave was to drunk & I seen Van halen in Concert a lot

That was they're worst & Scorps are much better live Van halens songs are always better on they're Albums

    Motley crew didnt disapoint either

  • I was there,... Yeah, I guess you'd call me an old dude!

SCORPIONS stole the show!!! ...then Judas Priest a close 2nd! ...and Triumph a close 3rd!... Little did anyone know, we were instore for a big Let-Down..

    .

After waiting Over an Hour, Van Halen hits the stage, as DRUNK as could be, Dave sounded like shit, even Eddy wasn't Eddy,...

I saw Halen at the World Music Festival in LA in 1980, they were Great!,..

Saw them again in 2008, {with Dave} and they Rocked!

hope the New VH rocks too!

  • Did Dave foresee the coming of e-tickets at 0:02? This man had an i-phone in 1983!!!

  • ah... the once "mighty van halen". that ed turned to shit... had more swagger than "the stones", then morphed in to another fukn journey.

  • someone said to me the other day they were waiting in line for Megadeath/Anthrax tickets and some douche decided to carry on like a crook chook about how he was there when 'heavy' metal began (??)..... and then he said IT....... 'when KORN began!!' I shudder to think what this fucknuckle thought music was about before Korn!!!! God help us from deadshits like that........ I've been listening to Van Halen (classic) since 79, & BEFORE that it was Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Scorpions

  • $1.5million dollars for a ninety minute show.

They played for $17,000.00 a minute.

This value makes me wonder when minimum wage will be equivalent.

  • @fps4romeo : Diamond Dave: How do you spell 'relief' ??? '1-m-i-l-l-i-o-n ' !!! Dave wanted $1.5 million for a 45 minute set just to outdo Bowie who was paid $1 million for a 30 minute set...... not too bad on any day let alone 1983 in the midst of Reganomics!!!! Van Halen are playing Soundwave revolution in September 2011 (5 shows) in Australia for $1 million per show.... ( estimate set 90 mins) so nothing has really changed in nearly 30 years :)

  • @fps4romeo: A Diamond Dave quote : How do you spell 'relief' ??? '1-m-i-l-l-i-o-n ' !!! Dave wanted $1.5 million for a 45 minute set just to outdo Bowie who was paid $1 million for a 30 minute set...... not too bad on any day let alone 1983 in the midst of Reganomics!!!! Van Halen are playing Soundwave revolution in September 2011 (5 shows) in Australia for $1 million per show.... ( estimate set 90 mins) so nothing has really changed in nearly 30 years :)

Van Halen was the shit and still is!!!

  • Lee Roth voted 4th best front man of all time by Rolling Stones Magazine

Your balls would be swollen too if it was you

    Credit where credit is due

  • Comment removed

  • Dave was going bald even back then.

  • They actually sucked at this show. Drunk assholes.

  • In a word: LEGENDARY.

  • Wasn't that CAROL CHANNING?

  • I heard Dave was deep in the Amazon jungle when Steve Wozniak called him and asked VH to be at the US Festival.........now that's rock 'n roll for ya.

  • This ain't the motherfuckin' Clash...man.

  • rap sucks balls people

  • The official Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame web page of inductee Van Halen, in its opening paragraph, describes VH best: "Van Halen formed in 1974 but emerged in public view with the 1978 release of their self-titled debut album, which quickly established them as the hottest American hard-rock band since Aerosmith. Van Halen reinvigorated hard rock during a period of doldrums by bringing youthful, West Coast bravado and blistering virtuosity to the genre."

  • This was just a mainstream media depiction of VH that would label & lump them together in the Heavy Metal genre b/c they didn't know what else to call them. "Entertainment Tonight" once said VH was Heavy Metal. VH was a Party, Hard Rock band. The only other bands that I would describe in this way would be AC/DC, &, to a lesser degree, old Aerosmith. Does anyone consider AC/DC Heavy Metal? If you want to know what classic VH called its sound, Dave described it best. He called VH music "Big Rock."

  • @cvjucla3 : actually, if you go back to pre-1984 , and look at the old Hit Parader's , Spin's, Rolling Stone's etc.... AC/DC was considered "Heavy Metal" at the time - we're talking before speed/thrash metal had any type of commercial value (well....maybe Motorhead)....Iron Maiden was "Heavy Metal" whereas now they would be "progressive hard rock" , or "hard rock" -times have changed

  • @hazor777 True, but you're probably responding to some twat who was born in 92 who wouldn't know either way and, w/ the typical smug attitude that goes along w/ young kids today, wouldn't believe you.

  • @hazor777 Yes, one way to describe AC/DC pre-1984 would be Heavy Metal. In my previous paragraph that you responded to, I said that "VH was a Party, Hard Rock band. The only other bands that I would describe in this way would be AC/DC, &, to a lesser degree, old Aerosmith." I said, "Does anyone consider AC/DC Heavy Metal?" because I was posing the question as a question for today. But you are correct, like Van Halen, AC/DC was also lumped into the Heavy Metal category at times back in the day.

  • @cvjucla3 :If memory serves me correctly, I believe the term "Heavy Metal" was used to describe (originally) Jimi Hendrix's fuzz guitar sound on Purple Haze, and was also used to describe Deep Purple's 'Hush" - ironically enough. Though I could see how a writer would describe Hendrix that way, I dont see the conection to 'Hush'. Now watch every fucking Youtube asshole take my comment wrongly and cry about it (i.e. Boxcarfred , there below) hahahaha!

  • The kings of heavy metal. see back than they were considered heavy metal. i hate people that forget that. monday morning quarterback bullshit. roth era van halen are the kings of all music.

  • This was rock-n-roll!!!! No f__king rap!!! Sex, Drugs & Rock-n-roll!!! Oh yah, and they played their instruments and wrote their own songs, unlike some musicians today. I know I sound old, but the truth is the truth. I just love Dave's attitude!!!

  • He's a such a yobbo but I love him !!

  • This shows how big Van Halen was in the early 80's...in 78, they were opening Anaheim Stadium for Aerosmith/Foreigner,(ACDC, VAN HALEN, PAT TRAVERS, FOREIGNER, AEROSMITH)in 83, they were headling the US FESTIVAL before a quarter of a million people...

OAKLAND STADIUM 78: Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent, Boston

  • $17K / minute must have been nice !!!

  • i'am hitch they such big rockstars

  • when music was really played by musicians....aaaah the gold old days.

  • @Angry0212 : no shit........this Millenium thing sucks ass

  • @Angry0212 im totally agree with you man.

  • these are a rock band!!! not any motley crue shit this is rock at its best !!! not fucking heavy metal

  • fuck you

  • so cool, to see dave and ed together!

  • Did ya see the Ride the limbed in at the End?

The Brotha's these days, all about the Benjamins!

    Including the WiggS!

  • Van Halen = Classic Rock.

  • pre 1984 lp they were metal for that time.

  • DLR is a riot :)

  • First of all VH isnt metal, and who cares what you call it, they still kick the shit out of that homo from Judas!! What a joke!!!

  • Kings of Heavy Metal :S WTF!!! Their not even metal xD The real Gods of Heavy Metal on us festival was Judas Priest

  • Metal was a pretty new thing back then, and what was and wasn't metal was pretty unsure back in the 80's. It's easy to tell now but back then it wasn't. But yeah, i agree. The real metal guys on that festival Judas.

  • Yeah :P Some thought they were metal when it was glam and so on :P

Too me Van Halen is a glamrock band, and a great one! :D

  • glamrock? ru kidding me?..the only way to classify VH is rock and roll. plain and simple

  • Glam rock and roll xD

  • Roth classified VH's music best when he called it 'Big Rock.'

  • yup :-D

    i liked that defintion too...

and when you think of the echoing stuff of the first albums or the big synth sound later on 1984 and onwards it's in fact very suitable...

  • Not Judas Priest..

Little crazy, drugged up man called OZZY ?!

He's the god of all sort of rock n' roll

  • its pop metal

  • kings of heavy metal?

since when is VH metal at all?

  • Why do you all care so much how Van Halen is classified? They were a great rock band. The fact that they were so unique and unclassifiable makes them better than most bands of that era. Van Halen is largely responsible for making the L.A. Sunset Strip hard rock scene so alive, paving the way for Motley Crue, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Guns 'N Roses, Poisen, on and on.

  • my speech man...

ya know if there would be any way of classifying all the great stuff they've done with the word metal included i would say "teeth-metal"...but VH is so much more than just that...everybody who really knows their music knows this....

    so long...

    rock on

  • Amen bro!

  • @BoxcarFred : we dont care, just simply putting our 2 cents in for those who are most likely under 30 yrs old & wouldnt know otherwise. Why do you seem to so fucking sensitive to what it was we were saying?

  • hunkola , you need to check out some of the interviews on youtube with ed, definately not a nidiot very honest and sincere its the media that turned on ed. And if daves speaking skills impress you well that leaves a lot to be desired on your part.

  • Ed's not an idiot, he's just not comfortable speaking in public. But Roth has always been the voice of this band - after he left, Van Halen could NOT do a single decent interview for whatever reason. Not to bash Hagar or the other three, but Hunkola's right on this point - DLR knows how to use the mic. The rest know how to play instruments, and are better left to that.

  • Did MTV really sue them (i.e. Dave) for being too loaded and jazzing up the filming? Read this on another VH post here.

  • I remember a quote from Dave about that show, "I wouldn't miss it for a million dollars".

  • $17,000 dollars per minute??

  • The obvious thing about classic Van Halen is.....Diamond Dave deserves a microphone in his hands, and Eddie needs a guitar in his.....whenever Ed speaks, he usu. reveals himself to be a blithering idiot......Dave has the gift of gab.

  • lol well at least eddie remembers his parts he wrote to thier own songs

  • Apparently you didnt attend a show on the 2004 tour. Eddie was totally wasted onstage every night and his guitar-playing was on par with a 9 yr. old retard. He was quite pathetic. Let's just hope he cleaned up his act and starts shredding like the old days for this fall reunion tour with Diamond Dave....

  • wolfgang was 14. but ed was pretty sloppy.

  • This is when Eddie was much cooler; when he let Roth do all the talking, and you didn't hear his voice produce not nary a word audible.

  • very true!
