In a performance like this I never see a diva, but rather a complete artist at the top of his/her game. Montserrat was definitly at her top.. I always debate who has perfomed this very difficult aria better? Callas or Caballe? Give credit to the lady.

For the people who did not like the videos the only thing a I have to say is: Pity. You have to re-educate your ears and learn with both Divas what singing is.
there is nothing wrong with comparing divas. there is something wrong with saying things like "she sucks! how dare she, Callas owns this song!" or "she tries to be like Joan Sutherland, but she's just a poser!" honest comparison and diva trolling are not the same thing =)

Great voice, but so wooden. Not suited to this role, however I do not think that Callas is, unlike the other fools on this comments section. Callas sounded terrible, screeched far too much for my liking.
This is magnificent. The effortless perfection thanks to a rigorous technique is something you can only find in her. I must say it was way better than Maria Callas's performance. Callas wanted to conjugate bel canto with her histrionic skills, resulting in dramatically rich pieces, but sacrificing the purity of the arias because of the constant screams she used to do. Montserrat Caballé, on the other hand, sings what she has to sing, reaches the notes she has to reach, all with beautiful art.

The term falsetto is used in the context of singing to refer to a type of vocal phonation that enables the singer to sing notes beyond the vocal range of the normal or modal voice. Caballe is a soprano, right? Casta diva more high note is a high B-Flat. She needs to sing in falsetto?. Would be heard in a opera house Chaste diva in falsetto? Oh! as much tinpot clever !!!
@fajamaqui I don't even know what you mean. Falsetto cannot be heard in opera houses? I'm a countertenor and therefore use nothing but falsetto and I do certainly sing opera and am perfectly able to make myself heard.
And the high note b-flat is certainly not sung in chestvoice, now´, is it - even by the great Caballe!
I'm a tenor and really am not qualified to say exactly how female voices work, but my impression is that there is a female falsetto but that opera singers don't tend to use it and they more of a head voice like tenors and baritones use - that's connected to the lower tones more than falsetto is. So, if I'm right, the top B flat would not be in "chest" voice, but would still not be falsetto.
@docboc44 I am also a Callas fan but it is unfair to set one great against the other, they both are great legends better than any modern soprano. There is a vidoe in which Caballe pays tribute to her friend Callas on youtube in which she has tears, it is very moving!
Monserrat Caballe is the highest expression of Opera. I can compare her only with Maria Callas. But is also the aria Norma Casta Diva, that is a Gift of Heaven.

This is magnificent. The effortless perfection thanks to a rigorous technique is something you can only find in her. I must say it was way better than Maria Callas's performance. Callas wanted to conjugate bel canto with her histrionic skills, resulting in dramatically rich pieces, but sacrificing the purity of the arias because of the constant screams she used to do. Montserrat Caballé, on the other hand, sings what she has to sing, reaches the notes she has to reach, all with beautiful art.

incredible. strong voice. PERFECT!
She is so concentrated that she hardy twinkles/ blinks.
As she is really overweight she is free from doubt to be so popular for anything else but her voice!
Callas... i ve heard was more loved for the drama than the purity and strength of her voice.
The may be all good, but this here is def. my favourite! Anyone who has ears!

she is very good but unfortunately does not reach the levels of divine Maria Callas, and although many say that horse is the sum of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, Caballe performances but do not show that.
Callas is unquestionably the best thing that could be in the bel canto opera and the environment.

I happen to love Callas and her voice, art and singing is still incredible and respected by all thinking and understanding souls in this world, be it from the art world or outside of it. PLUS Caballe herself admired Callas immensely (look at the videos here on youtube where she herself talks about Maria Callas).

@chrisscruzzz That is absolutely not true. Who ever said something like that? Of course they have a falsetto range, it just sounds different because the registers with women are not so far apart from each other than wit men because their mutation is not as big as it is with men.

@Maggielicious21: It is not really a discussion we should be having in the name of Mrs. Caballe. So I do apologize to all those who rightfully just came here for that.
But what else would you call the female "classical" singing voice? Of course it is falsetto. It is not head voice, it is not belt, it is not chest voice. Technically it is falsetto, namely the part of the voice "above the crack" and that is falsetto.

The term falsetto is used in the context of singing to refer to a type of vocal phonation that enables the singer to sing notes beyond the vocal range of the normal or modal voice. Caballe is a soprano, right? Casta diva more high note is a high B-Flat. She needs to sing in falsetto?. Would be heard in a opera house Chaste diva in falsetto? Oh! as much tinpot clever !!!

@fajamaqui I don't even know what you mean. Falsetto cannot be heard in opera houses? I'm a countertenor and therefore use nothing but falsetto and I do certainly sing opera and am perfectly able to make myself heard.
And the high note b-flat is certainly not sung in chestvoice, now´, is it - even by the great Caballe!

I'm a tenor and really am not qualified to say exactly how female voices work, but my impression is that there is a female falsetto but that opera singers don't tend to use it and they more of a head voice like tenors and baritones use - that's connected to the lower tones more than falsetto is. So, if I'm right, the top B flat would not be in "chest" voice, but would still not be falsetto.

@docboc44 I am also a Callas fan but it is unfair to set one great against the other, they both are great legends better than any modern soprano. There is a vidoe in which Caballe pays tribute to her friend Callas on youtube in which she has tears, it is very moving!

Monserrat Caballe is the highest expression of Opera. I can compare her only with Maria Callas. But is also the aria Norma Casta Diva, that is a Gift of Heaven.
