Vegeta is obsessed and has a heart filled with anger and hate, if he would let that go and focus purely on training and using the right methods, perhaps he would be able to surpass Goku and stay there. Goku's heart is pure, he doesn't have the trouble Vegeta has handling his emotions, that's why he is and allways will be stronger than Goku, allthough I do admitt that Vegeta does deserve to be the strongest, he trains harder than anyone.

Vegeta was trained from an early age by elite royal saiyans, while goku was born with a high spirit, got trained by a guy with a turtle shell on his back and ended up stronger than vegeta? it's a complete plot hole.

Vegeta's transformation is most interesting, he reaches the deepest depression and loses the will to live. The transformation was the key he needed to believ in life again and was the tyhing he needed to keep him alive.

"It comes from a need, not a desire." Goku's words are interesting here, his DESIRE to beat Goku was not enough, the NEED to stay alive was what he required. Without that, I don't think he could have done it, he is not powerful enough.

Well Goku says it himself while training Gohan in the time chamber, 'the power comes in response to a need, not a desire'. Goku needed it to beat Frieza, Vegeta needed it to survive in space, Gohan needed it to help defeat cell and because at that moment he would have probably been killed by Goku's blast, Future trunks needed it because with Gohan dead he was the last hope for the Earth. When Vegeta said he didnt care about survival, his body kicked in with the transformation and kept him alive.

They're a bit of an anomaly, I think the generally accepted theory is that when they were conceived their fathers were already super saiyans and that this made it easier for them.
