The SUPREME tenor of the operatic world. He knew what CHIAROSCURO meant and is consistent throughout his entire repertoire. Nothing like this type of singing is evident anywhere in the operatic scene today because teaching singing is an art, a science not acquired by university degrees which are costly and therefore require endorsement.

@SuperLuckydream Amen! I've been thinking the same thing myself, recently. Whether it's Nemorino or Werther, Duke of Mantua or Onegin, Count Almaviva or whomever, he always sings beautifully AND in the right style. It's surreal, really!
The more I hear Lemeshev, the more attractive his voice becomes. The voice grows slightly darker with age but still beautiful. He must have been sensational in the thirties.
Imagine the Bolshoi with both Lemeshev and Kozlovsky available to them. They must have thought they struck vocal gold. As lyric tenors go this is as good as it gets.

Perfekt

I must say that Sergei Lemeshev is one of the better I have heard so far. What a beautiful voice and strong performance. He is up there with the big names.
Personal taste is the only thing that can separate these wonderful tenors if you have an urge to do that.
This is very beautiful, it sounds perfect - like Corelli, Bjorling and Bergonzi rolled into one! :) Only discovered Lemeshev recently through these postings but he must surely be considered one of the greatest tenors of 20th century. Thank you Onegin65.
It's so easy to make fun of my english but in fact I made a mistake of word, I've just realized it. I was thinking that it was really sweet, as if the guy was surfing on a wave.
I really think it's beautiful!
Tanechka80, I'm not here to insult anyone, I'm a musician and I love music. If my message looked pretty ironic it was just a MISTAKE!
This "fagott" was married at least 7 times. The women he fell in love with were beautiful, intelligent, and artistic. Never in Russia I heard even a hint that he could be possibly homosexual. Then suddenly, on some English language site it is suggested. This is just a pure insinuation. Maybe wishful thinking on some people's part.
when i saw his lenski, my first impression was: wow, is he gay or what!! he's extremely delicate and beautiful too, very womanlike. i like that! and btw, i'm a lesbian myself, but i've been with men too, long time ago. i'm not surprised at all that lemeshev got divorced all the time! under stalin he could never have been openly gay.
This suggestion made me curious and prompted to do a search online in both Russian and English. In Russian, I could not find a single reference to Lemeshev being possibly guy. I tried all kinds of search words and came up with nothing! In English, there are a few cites where it is suggested that he was a closet guy, they all could be tracked down to one single source, some book about gays on that side of the iron curtain. Lemeshev was mentioned once. No source or prove was given.
i don't need links or a book, i only need to follow my gaydar (=gay radar), my built in gay detector, which went totally crazy when i saw his lenski. and being in the closet, most of the time means that it's not meant to become public. :P
I always thought that gays can't stand women and I have not heard of a gay who would fall in love with numerous women. On the other hand I know a guy who is definitely not gay, but he is so good looking that gays often make passes at him. It's kind of similar to how my Jewish friends try to find Jewishness in any smart person :)
some gays hate women, but many gays that i know almost exclusively have girls for friends, which is logical, because they like the same things: shopping, fashion, gossip and... men! i'm a woman and i have plenty of male gay friends. and yes, it's true, gaydar isn't infallible, but most of the time it works just fine.
Female friends and female lovers are two very different things. And frankly, why there is not even a hint in a Russian source about this? Tchaikovsky's inclinations weren't a secret. It's a known fact that many ballet dancers were gay. But there's not even a trace of rumor about Lemeshev. Given that common folk like to gossip, there is probably no basis for this speculation. I admire Tchajkovsky and would have admired Lemeshev if he were gay, but he wasn't.
@aidavdbrake I read memoirs of the singer Vadim Kozin, (he was gay), where he wrote , "Lemeshev throws himself upon any woman". There are other quotes about his womanizing in Russian sources. He had nice manners only until someone would make him angry. For example, a singer, who rehearsed with him a lot, wrote, "God save you to bother him before a show". All that didn make him less charming though.
I don't want to spend more time repeating the search so you will have to find that book yourself. I don't have anything against gays, but I think it's a stretch to label Lemeshev as one just because he was a very gentle person, artistic, softly spoken and kind. The fact is he fell in love with many women. Who can blame him? He had so many women admirers who would do everything to get his attention. I would fall in love with him myself if I met him!
@aidavdbrake Lemeshev in fact was famous as a womanizer. He was married six times and had a daughter. As for his beauty, you would have thought that all the Soviet tenors were gay, if you saw them onstage. they wore really heavy makeup with long eyelashes. it was a tradition. A tenor had to be very handsome, especially, when he sang Lensky. Leonid Sobinov had set such a high standart of handsomeness, that others had to match him.
Thanks for giving that rare and exusive pleasure. That is really appreciated. Magnifica voce,e stupenda pronuncia italiana... Please do tell if there is a Lemeshev site, it is lonley to live away from my country for so long
Thanks for the posting that is really appreciated. Uncomparable voice and technique in such a unique interpretation. It is great pity not to see him in motion while singing.
Fantastic, thank you for sharing. A piece of advice : try listening to this with the sound of your computer set to "auditorium" or "stone room" (a little bit of echo), and set the equalizer to "live vocal" or whatever, and you will hear Lemeshev as he would sound live if the recording was better. You will hear his true voice. Same league as Gigli or Corelli : one of the best singers of the century, the voice of an angel. Thanks again for this great document !
I know, right ?! Changed everything for me. Before that, I thought that people who claimed to like Gigle or Caruso were just snobs. But with this "trick", you can actually hear something close to their "true" voice, what they would sound like if you could hear them live... and, well, they are terrific indeed ! Sergei Lemeshev sure is. I'm glad I could be of some assistance in that regard !
Italian is one of the languages I speak, and his Italian is perfectly legitimate. The only thing one notices is that his method of vocal production--open phonation-slightly alters the musical line, primarily because some words at the bottom of his range are stressed more than an Italian would stress them. While that lends a slight "foreign" feeling to the music, it is a question of musical style as opposed to language itself. A GREAT tenor, and a beautiful rendition!
нет слов!!!!!!! достояние России на все времена!!!!!!! чистейший бриллиант!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you do that? You have to have a special program, or does every computer come with these features?
