I think this dam is a great way to jump start laos effort to become modern. And they people that are complaining about how it will change peoples lives and the enviroment, well if they never change anything how will the country get out of being the poorest country in South East Asia. Let the people of laos have some basic commodities you take for granted, power, runing water, and better transportation.
I agree, Laos needs to move forward instead of moving backward. This will be a great dam to start and to bring more projects like this into the country.
I love the idea of this project. it will create some income, even though it will take long time to pay back but i believe that worth it. The next thing laos people have to worry about is how to manage the income created by this dam. is it gonna be in the hand of a man who is trust worthy or a man who would spread the wealth around his colleague. and would there be any organization to audit his account?
is building coal power plants more friendly? dams arent destroying countries. and agriculture and limited population wont bring any electricity. how can people heat up their water for rice in the evening? with firewood, causing more pollution? in dams the only pollution is from decaying plants that were submerged. but plants release CO2 all the time when they die.
it is easy to love the environment when you are rich. The Lao has to survive in the 21st century by using their natural resources. Please take heart you imperialist smugf!.
The government don't give a shit to the lao people. They built this project then put all the money in to communist party to play with whores. The lao people will always poor and poor forever. This project is just a piece of shit. Lao people need a better life not poor.
Do you know, when Chinese build the Mega damn of 25 billions dollars in Yangsee river in the central of China.. How much is the effect??? A whole town was submerg under water.. many of Ancient Civilization areas was destroyed, and alot polutions... Open your eyes and watched.. Laos is too small to criticize, nothing 1.4 billion is comparable to Chinese 25 billions.
This white girl, speak ridiculous Lao language... Sound stupid.. it read " Naam Theurn 2 " not "Namtern 2".. Stupid English speaker.. learn to speak clearly Lao before you speak..
because Lao is the "poorest".. So ..it have to do something... It is the opportunity, we will build not only this dam, there will be so many others..Wait and keep creticizing... Do not forget "Panama" ..
I think, it is the right choice, IF we do not do it who will do it.. Look at the Chinese 10 Dams in the upper Mekong river.go blame them., you the west people just are the good cretique, what did you do with your environment in the last 100 years. Now you have money, and you can say any thing.. The Lao do the right things..
it is easy to critized the poor trying to survive. The reason we are the poorest country in Asia it is because others stole out raw materials starting from colonial days. We will try to survive by using our (OUR) natural resources not steeling from others like the so called powerful Nation. So do not be smug about critizing our effort to improve our life.
I participated in a socioeconomic survery of the communities displaced by this dam project. I spent a number of weeks in the area. As far as hydro project goes, this one is as ethical as can be. The living standard for these people was truly terrible. Now they have clean water, sanitation, gardens, and animal stock. I am not associated with Nam Theun 2 in any way. But I do think highly of this potentially controversial project.
I have visited the site twice in the last two years. Villagers are not being given $200.00 per family, they are being given 27 kilos of rice, and a new village. The $200.00 pays for the construction of the village. Last year I returned to a village that has now been raised. There were villagers there waiting for their water buffalos. Every time the villagers move the buffaloes to the new village, they go back "home" to the old village.
The people returned to pick fruit from their trees.
Geoffhuth, thank you very much for visiting and let us know. My native village is in the centre of Savannakhet, bowl of Lao rice fields. A dam was done to sink all rice fields. How land lost? Famine after that. I am afraid similar thing happens here. If the project takes care of farmers so that they can start new life, I'm happy. Anyway, tiny people cannot do anything, exept you. Let outside world know about them.

Dam construction needs great sum of money. Laos cannot do without support from WB. By the construction, people have to move from the site, and destruction of natural vegetation. But, along the road from VT to the south, we may see firewood and charcoal that people buy home to burn for cooking. These materials are from forest. If the Lao authority has policy to supply electric power at low price for cooking, how much forest will be saved?
I wish we the people of Laos and the country of Laos can see the beauty within instead of blindly falling into the hands of the world leader(& our surrounding neighbors)and not to realize that they are only giving us hope for no reason but to keep our country poor so they can benefit from the rewards and keep their country rich. I will someday shed some light to the world to let people understand why we all have "Laos" tatted across our arms and chest.....
i dont know what to say one thing there bring in money in to the county which the county need but then again the ppl that live off the river don't need to have that much money but they need the river to live. i think if you look at Lao as a hole the dam project is a good idea but if you look at lao ppl to ppl then it going to hurt a lot of ppl rite now.
they aren't doing this for laos people i don't care theres more eco friendly ways to produce electricity they are using this to feed thai cause its such a big tourist attraction i hate central banking and world banking systems its to exploit the poor and keep them poor
As a citizen who wants to understand I miss that the experts have not developed a dam index that classifies prospective and existing dams in terms of the harm they can do to environment. With such an index it would be easier to know when we should fight a new project and when in compensation we should be asking instead for the decommissioning of an old dam. Behaving like green bullies, hindering developing countries from accessing hydro power, might not be the best way to solve our problems
That lady is hot lol

The next thing laos people have to worry about is how to manage the income created by this dam. is it gonna be in the hand of a man who is trust worthy or a man who would spread the wealth around his colleague. and would there be any organization to audit his account?

You're destroying your country; you don't need this. You want it. You need to survive the way you always have: agriculture and limited population.
Dams are never a good idea.
lumpagogo 3 years ago
is building coal power plants more friendly? dams arent destroying countries. and agriculture and limited population wont bring any electricity. how can people heat up their water for rice in the evening? with firewood, causing more pollution? in dams the only pollution is from decaying plants that were submerged. but plants release CO2 all the time when they die.

Laos is too small to criticize, nothing 1.4 billion is comparable to Chinese 25 billions.

because Lao is the "poorest"..

The Lao do the right things..

thonsonan,
it is easy to critized the poor trying to survive.

Midwifemb, thank you. I think it should be on the way you told. The project manager is key for the improvement.
Thank you.

The people returned to pick fruit from their trees.
geoffhutch 3 years ago
Geoffhuth, thank you very much for visiting and let us know. My native village is in the centre of Savannakhet, bowl of Lao rice fields. A dam was done to sink all rice fields. How land lost? Famine after that. I am afraid similar thing happens here. If the project takes care of farmers so that they can start new life, I'm happy. Anyway, tiny people cannot do anything, exept you. Let outside world know about them.
Thank you.
