I miss these kind of interviews from these WWF PPV'S...I miss the old times too. All we hear about now is Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross and Michael Cole yapping during matches and not commenting on the holds and moves like Monsoon and Ventura did and we also now get Trish Stratus, Sable, Lita etc showing how much of a slut they are now too by doing nightgown contests, swimsuit contests, remember that?
We also have wrestlers now that do more talking on the mic than wrestle.
Actually I just saw a version of this match with jive soul bro -- must have been remastered with the new track after they got the rights. I actually like Akeem's entrance theme in this video -- anyone know what it is called?
@carnivalhuckster Well, the match they had, three weeks later, on "Saturday Night's Main Event" wasn't that much better. They could work well together, but as a team. Against each other, it wasn't that good, in my opinion.
@DanyMercury2 Yeah man, I actually liked George Gray as the One Man Gang and thought that Akeem was sort of silly, although still quite enteraining. Too bad the dumb WWF (aka Vince McMahon) didn't do more with Gray.... McMahon and crew also put too much emphasis on the heavyweights (Hogan, Andre, Warrior) whereas some of the best maches were with smaller, lighter dudes like Bret Hart, Rockers, Roma, etc.
@Iamb180 It is from the "WWE WrestleMania : The Complete Anthology". For the themes, the 6th one was probably the worst, especially Dusty Rhodes', since he dances to it in the ring.
@jparra20 They don't seem to have the rights to "Hard Times", but they used his theme from the late 90s instead. Older fans don't get the same feeling from it, like me. We feel cheated.
@DanyMercury2 They use these themes in the later anthology releases...McMahon must've gotten a LOT of complaints, and rightfully so, the dubbing isn't even good, you can hear both themes in the background, and Finkel sounds like he was talking in a phone booth for the dubbing.
@Seanatonin "Jive Soul Bro", "Hard Times", "Common Man Boogie", and "Demolition", among others, were not used by the WWE, because they don't own the rights anymore.
What I don't get is that Dusty Rhodes danced to "Common Man Boogie" backstage, on "WWE Raw", not so long ago. So, it was used on television.
@DanyMercury2 I think when WWE made this anthology they never had the rigths to the "comman Man Boogie" however after this realease i think they bought the rights, i did hear that
@HBK344356 I am unsure if they ever fully owned the rights. I think they just never wanted to pay the royalties, and that is the reason why Jimmy Hart's songs were not as used as Jim Johnston's. We just have to look at the tracks used for the "WWE Anthology" album.
Themes for Dusty Rhodes, The Big Boss Man, and Demolition were co-written by Jimmy Hart.
with the battle royal i heard why they made it too fast is bc of iron sheik's health where he couldnt be thrown out of i think health issues even though he retired in 2003 too quick of a battle royal & i didnt think gray would shave his trademark beard even though he did back ck in wcw summer 1991 before leaving for the first time in his career
@DanyMercury2 Actually, Gray had lost a lot of weight and could no longer fit into the Akeem costume, so had to go with One Man Gang. That would've been awesome if the Akeem character was in it *and* won, and Slick could've came out, and we would've had one more dance for old time's sake...however, it would've been cool to see Akeem dance with Rikishi and Too Cool :)
@fivebearrugs I know the reason why George wasn't Akeem, but I think that One Man Gang did a lot more for him than Akeem did, so, in the end, it was perfect.
That match was so useless, anyway. All those legends for nothing. And Jim Cornette ? What was he doing there ? He survived for a while.
The match was boring, it was useless, and even Michael Hayes seemed to think that it was worthless. The way he talked about his only appearance at WrestleMania, it didn't sound like it meant a lot.
@DanyMercury2 I agree...I mean, The Gobbeldygooker? Duke "The Dumpster" Droese? Jim Cornette? The Goon?! Sigh... It should've been main event or mid-card wrestlers from the 80s and 90s: Hacksaw, Jake, DiBiase, OMG, Slaughter, Quake, Kamala, Hillbilly, Honky, Hammer, Fab Rougeaus, Piper, Snuka, Tito, Razor, Diesel, Jannetty, Anvil, Haku, Demos, Dragon, Koko, etc...and yes I know I mentioned those who were actually in the match, lol...and it should've NEVER been called a Gimmick Battle Royal...
@fivebearrugs To be fair, the Gimmick Battle Royal was only thought up a week or so before Wrestlemania X-Seven by Paul Heyman. So time was not on their side when it came to rounding up every gimmick they could. Some had prior commitments. They were lucky to get the ones they did. Also they wouldn't have been able to get Diesel or Razor Ramon as they were still under contract by Time Warner and it would have cost WWE millions to buy them out for just a gimmick match.
i wanted to see gray resume the akeem gimmick 11 years later at the gimmick battle royal but bc of his heart attack he had to resume the OMG gimmick bc the akeem outfit could no longer fit he lost over 100 lbs & i wanted to see slick with OMG at wrestlemania X7 gimmick battle royal as a manager too but it was nice seeing slick at mania 23 backstage dancing
@stone85 I think they could have done a lot more with that battle royal. It was too fast, obviously unimportant for the WWE.
I thought that Jim Cornette had no place in the batle royal. He was always too afraid of everybody to wrestle. At least, when he was in the WWE.
Every time there are legends, they are misused. For example, at "WWE WrestleMania XXV". Jimmy Snuka & Roddy Piper were there for nothing. Ricky Steamboat gave a great performance. I wish they could give more time to the legends.
I don't know what the real issue was, but the McMahon family did not buy the rights to some of these old themes.
Was it a question of money ? Was it a question of "I don't think the fans will care" or was it just that the people who own the rights did not want to sell them to the WWE ?
I don't know. All I know is that I miss those old themes. It's very wrong not to have "Jive Soul Bro", "Demolition", "Servin' Hard Time" and "Common Man Boogie", among others, in my opinion.
@mcneal78 That WrestleMania was one of my favourites, yet, on that Anthology, it is one of the most annoying because of the theme songs. The most annoying one is Dusty Rhodes. After all, Dusty dances to the song at the end...
I don't understand why they could play the song last year on "WWE Raw", but they could not put it on the DVDs.
@DanyMercury2 After i heard about what the WWE was doing in terms of the old theme songs, it made me think twice about purchasing the WrestleMania anthology. Haven't done it and don't plan to. I know it's all about the wrestling but when u pay your hard earned money, you wanna pay for some classic stuff, not some stuff that's watered down.
@mcneal78 That depends how you see it, but I agree with you. How much money do we have to give them to get what we want ? I mean, it's not like, brand new, the box set was cheap at first. We get footage that is blurry, and fake theme songs. I mean, just for that, the price should have been much less.
It's like buying a pizza, with 2-3 slices missing, and a bunch of missing ingredients on it. It's not right.
Well, you can forget about that theme song. "Jive Soul Bro" was his real one, but hey, guess what ? Just like the Big Boss Man, Dusty Rhodes & Demolition, the theme music was changed because the McMahon family didn't have the rights and they probably thought nobody would care, which is wrong.
I don't know what that song is called, but "Jive Soul Bro" is way better.
Vince McMahon came up with the idea. He told George Gray, "You know, One Man Gang is boring. You need some colors. Can you dance ? Grow your hair too. You'll be playing a black character, Akeem, the African Dream."
In a shoot interview, Gray said that he didn't believe it when McMahon told him, and when Slick told him too. He later found out that it was indeed true.
He said he enjoyed the gimmick, and black people weren't offended at all.
I miss these kind of interviews from these WWF PPV'S...I miss the old times too. @stone85 For The Iron Sheik, I don't think it was responsible to have him in the battle royal. He couldn't give a good performance.
I really disliked the fact that The Goon was there, while better gimmicks were not.
The Iron Sheik deserved to be there, as he is a legend. However, he didn't give a good performance because of his health.
And Gray, I think that Akeem was a very good character, but One Man Gang made him famous, so I think that in the end, it was for the better.
