Bono's voice has been in decline since ZooTV but here he sings like he's never sang before. His voice is completely different to it's ZooTV peak, but almost as good! For the first time in his career, he's hitting the high notes without going into falsetto (which he did a lot during ZooTV) and it sounds so soulful and clear! I'm really excited about No Line On The Horizon now! Just think; before and after this gig, he was in the studio recording new songs with that voice!
Bono....Bravo. Take care of that amazing voice that seems to be getting better with Age. We are going to need your music more than ever in the yrs to come.
I used to think that the Boston Elevation show was the best performance of this song. This beats it. Bono's voice is superb here. I can't wait for the new album.
yes his voice sounds great here but i think being on tour takes it out of him. he hasn't just come out of a concert here. he has being resting. but im always optimistic. and here we can see the power in his voice that used to be there
Also... listen to Edge - his voice his still freaky powerful. Very little has changed. Age hasn't gotten in the way of his voice.
My one beef - there are a couple *really* tiny things he could do to preserve his voice without losing any of the "feeling" - he'd also have better stamina, able to keep the strength longer live.
But, I'm not complaining. I didn't think we'd ever hear that voice again - I've been sitting here with my eyes bugged out and a *huge* smile on my face :)
Those of you who're talking about his age... age doesn't actually have as significant effect on voice as people generally think. In fact, many male voices improve throughout their lives - if you're not killing your voice (as Bono's been known to do), you can keep on going for a long, long time...
This sounds better than the Boston DVD. He really has his voice back here. Not completely, i mean it still has a little bit of that rough edge to it. But it sounds better than it sounded basically for most of the vertigo tour and elevation tours, and definitely the pop tour. Popmart was just shit for bonos voice. He got better for elevation, but shitty again for vertigo. Hopefully he's like this for the next tour when they come to my town. He sounds amazing here! And the Edge always sounds good.
Bono's voice sounds great here, I hope that he maximizes it value on the next album. I think it wasn't on HTDAAB. I think the big drop off has been with Larry's drumming, go on here and pull up With or Without You from Syracuse or Paris, great drumming
Not true. Larry's drumming is the best it has ever been, he has only gotten better. Vertigo tour case in point- Vertigo, they played Gloria, An Cat Dubh, Electric co again, he did unbelievable. Then the SBS, Bullet transition, playing those songs back to back. The fly, the list goes on for his great drumming. He is still unbelievably fast and coordinated. He has slowed down on with or without you from 1987 to now to match the loss in Bono's voice. He can still smash those drums, believe me.
Sometimes your voice just needs some rest. He was touring so hard, and now he finally got a few years of rest and his vocal chords have recovered a bit. That being said, I thought Vertigo Tour showed a lot of the "old Bono." He's still got it, and I thank God for it, because his voice has always touched my heart.
Bono messed up at 2:17. He wasn't supposed to say "and the night would be enought" for another verse or two... They both got a good smile out of it though...
EXACTLY!! Watch the performance of Desire from the same night, sounds like rattle and hum voice is back. I think this was Bono's best era as far as his voice.. with or without you, lovetown performances of streets, Bad and God Part II,etc.
That being said... I still loved his voice during the Popmart/Elevation era. It may not have had the power it once had, but he displayed such amazing control over it. And, that lead to some amazing renditions of some of U2's songs. Check our Irving Plaza from 2000 and you can see what I'm talking about...
I wouldn't have though so either, until I saw clips from Union Chapel. Desire and Angel of Harlem do sound like Rattle and Hum era. Will it continue? Who knows, it will be a long tour, etc, but as someone else already commented, this is about the 1st time in his career Bono is taking care of his voice, not smoking, etc. It sounded much better in late 2006 and is on the upswing in general. Late 2006 saw some of the best performances of the U2 classics since the 1980s!
I agree!! I mean Bono's voice was actually much deeper in the Rattle & Hum era, but it also cracked more. He has much more control now, as you can hear in this song. I think a song that sounded better during Rattle & Hum, was WOWY, because of the deeper voice. But, songs like ONE, WTSHNN, STAY, BAD, Still Haven't Found, all sound better now because of the smoother, more controlled voice.
There's an Angel of Harlem recording from the Union Chapel show? Anybody know anything about this? Please, oh please, tell me there's a new AoH recording with the brand-spankin'-shiny-new-voice he's got.
Combining the control he's developed over the years with the bright, tonal thing he's got back in his throat... I just want to hear as many recordings as have been made from the past few months.
It feels like he's recovered from a terminal illness.
I was 7 when I first met U2, thru MTV, all the way back to 94. Somehow I kept in my memory the black 'n white video w/ angels 'n ponytails. It was only around 98 w/ their first arrival here that I really came to appreciate the band and found out that my childhood song was Stay. I immediately fell in love for it ever since, but felt terribly disappointed to find out SHE wasn't only left out of Vertigo, but out of U218. I dreamt of the day U2 would remember her. Now this dream came thru, tks U2!
As a fellow musician...When playing live we all sometimes change words on the fly...it's kind of like your brain gets bored with the same old rendition when you have played it a couple hundred times. Yes! we are all human.
I'm so happy, I thought Bono's voice was fading over the last 4 or 5 years, but he's been reborn! That's what I love about U2; just when you think they've gone as far as they can, they change direction and reinvent themselves. Think their next album will be awesome after hearing them in Fez - long live U2!
I agree that their new album will be amazing and hopefully they do go in a new direction but what from any of these new clips gives you the impression they've gone in a new direction? I mean they're simply playing acoustic versions of songs in a way they've always done. Apart from Wave of Sorrow which has new lyrics all of this is old. Amazing but old. There's nothing new here except Bono's new found fondness for switching up his head gear while not wearing shades. lol
Thanks so much for this. Edge amazing as usual although I could of sworn he made a mistake somewhere at like 2:18, no matter he's still amazing. And Bono's voice is sounding great can't wait to see them all live.
Is it just me or did Bono sing the wrong lyrics at that point and that was just Edge moving to the correct chord progression for that part of the song?
The line goes:
"And if you look, you look through me"
and Bono started with "And when you talk its not not to me"
This is my hubby's account. I don't have a YouTube account.
I love this song. Bono sung perfectly here. The Edge too.
I loooooooove When Bono sings and smiles at the same time. Melts my Heart....
