  • that was just incredible drumming love buddys playing what a star.

  • i used to have this tune on vinyl i have it on cd now. Rich live in london, ronnie scotts club. This solo is good or very good but the one on the album is astonishingly brilliantly awesome.

  • ... leaving the bodies of all other drummers before, during, since, or ever to be, in his vapor trail ...

  • Part II blows me away, just like Part I did.

  • Keepin' up with !

  • Badass #1 of the kitchen. Hah,Paula Deen ain't got nothin on buddy!

  • You white guys are soooo toughy about Buddy aren't you???

  • Time Being is my favorite BR performance and chart. It has everything: energy, passion, melody, harmony, incredible rhythms, one hell of a band and the greatest drummer that ever drew breath! No one, I mean NO ONE, can drive a band like Buddy!! Was this recorded at Ronny Scotts in London? I have the recoding from the 1972 RCA live LP Rich Live In London. WOW!!!!!!!

  • And he does it all in a suit!

  • buddy would crush everyone....they were afraid of him.......listen to how he wiped the ass of max on figure eights.....enough said...

  • Good lord: 1:18 to 1:26. Bass work is sick.

  • playing the album to death in early '70s was great, seeing it now on tape is stupendous.

  • is that the ending to beat all endings..love the power

  • Thank you for posting this. This is an absolutely amazing solo. I wore out my copy of Live in London. He was definitely the greatest drummer of his time. RIP my friend. We miss you. Thank you for the music and your inspiration to all drummers.

  • se mama, esta cabron el tipo este

  • Really on top of his game. Gave rise to those brits, Bonham,Paice,Ginger baker and Mitch Mitchell. None of them could hol a candle to Buddy, but Buddy sure inspired some of the greatest R&R drummers.

  • Yes,but there were quite a few,American Drummers ,That your leaving out and Buddy admired ,seen all those you mentioned but some great ones existed right here Bro...

  • I agree... for all of his bravado Buddy was scared to death by Roy, Elvin and Max :-)

Although at that level it's not really about competition..

It seems that only the Pro "whoever" camps on the internet that take it so personally..

Buddy was great... I love and miss you brother RIP...

  • @63Brummie I don't think that's at all accurate

    different bags all together

surprised by such a dumb guess

sorry for telling the truth but you know it was stupid

  • @ishredu

Although at that level it's not really about competition..

  • @63Brummie I never said it was about "competition"

  • @63Brummie Buddy Rich? You mean Buddy Rich, The World's Greatest Drummer, was "scared to death of Elvin, Max and ROY HAYNES? Roy Haynes?

What????? Where do you get this info?

Are you even a musician, let alone a drummer, at all???

I can assure you, Bernard was "scared to death" of no one ~

  • @MarkR1957 Right on!!! Buddy Rich scared of another drummer? No it was the other way around...

  • @MarkR1957 Right on!!! Buddy Rich scared of another drummer? No,it was the other way around...

  • @63Brummie Buddy ate Roach alive on their "Vs." album. He made Roach sound like a rank amateur, and I sincerely doubt Roy or Elvin made Buddy sweat. Buddy knew he was the best.

  • @63Brummie stupid

  • music all over it! 0:53 is just one example of his ability to control the ENTIRE drum to assimilate any musical note he wanted at any given time

if your ears are up to? it dig on that shit !

  • 'Live At Ronnie Scotts'

    an amazing recording...

  • Jazz is an American classic, therefore we present it as such without nonsense and without funny hats. Buddy Rich

  • absolutely amazing !!

  • He just keeps going... where does it all come from! Holy shiiiiiit. XD

  • Every motion he makes is so smooth so normal. Its like he just farts and plays this beyondGodlike solo.Thats why none can get even close.

  • Maaaannn..... Buddy was a freak of nature.

He just pulled stuff out of some bag of tricks that had no bottom!!!

  • BR quote:"People who play, will continue to play, and the people who steal and copy will continue to be bad imitations and thieves. So, it's up to the young people who are totally creative in the instrument, to ever progress any place." Interviewer - Jim Warchol, Modern Drummer Magazine, 1977

  • Mark 1957 yes right on. Buddy and The Rolling Stones live are too big for microphones of todays technology. Just can't take all the frquencies being pumped at it at once so you get the mid ranges and clip out the top and bottom.. Yeah and the way Buddy gets those doggies to blow w/extra punch simply too much to explain. I've seen a lot of top musicians including drummers and Buddy just was on a different level above the highest IMO

  • Will he ever be surpassed? I think he was a physical freak of nature w/extra wrist and forearm muscles or something built a little different. So glad I could witness him and his band in my life. He's never been recorded properly IMO according to what he really sounded like live. anybody else back me up there?

  • The direct to disc album "Class of 78" is one of, if not the best, recording of Buddy's big band, going by sound qualioty and recording techniques.

I also think his early Pacific Jazz records sounded fantastic, as did "Keep the Customer Satisfied".

But, you are correct in this - I saw him live 30 times, and there is no way to describe the sheer force of nature this man was when he gave a live concert.

    Absolutely astounding ~

  • welllllll...thats debatable.of course,my favorite solos are the 60"s...such a drama...but of course..they are all a lesson for all of us,a freak of nature...born to drum..an tear the face off of anyone who thinks they are a awesome drummer...R.I.P. all the greats that paved the way for us mere mortals.

  • Not sure what you are saying is debatable - Personally, I think Buddy was in his prime right after he left James in the 60's up till about 71-72.

That's my favorite rea of Buddy's career.

His records on Pacific jazz were superb, and his bands from 66-71ish were absolutely spectacular.

I think these were Buddy's Golden Years.

He was the absolute undisputed Master at this point in time.

Of course, he was no slouch later in his career.

Got to know Buddy a bit - he was a cool cat, daddy-o ~

  • ERA, not rea - damned typos!

  • i like this to cause the men he was playin with were close to his age, or closer lol. plus also think he sounded great playing roger drums.

  • 3:08. Buddy is just tearing it up!! Who says you need double kick?!! What separates Buddy from the rest is he makes the impossible possible, and does it with incredible dynamics, ease and SWING!!! Most drummers might quit when they see Buddy, but for me he inspires me! Truly amazing.

  • you can have favorite era's but I have a recording he did in 1986 a mere four month before his death that has to heard to be believed..I digress, this kind of honesty will probably never be seen again..the climate of the industry is soo against it ever happening again, in fact? it was against it even back then..buddy fought the power his whole career, we have great drummers today but not great the way buddy was great..the raw power the deft of command like they said, "once in a lifetime"

  • wow were on earth did this come from?

  • Wow! What an inspired - and inspiring - performance. The interplay between his left hand and bass foot is remarkable. Crisp snare, with a great ring, that blends with the toms. Nice! Thanks brian740!

    From Taiwan

  • I saw bloody many live concerts from Buddy - but THIS finisher he hardly ever reached (again), he was at his technical climax. The complicated arrangement invites the drummer to a "chaotic" tom-cymbal-WAR, of course - and Buddy fulfills all expectations and shows his mastership!

  • Well said whitty -Bloody........

  • MASTER HANDS w/, MASTER MIND ,drummers? today bore a newborn...

  • One word describe Buddy "WOW"

  • What a dynamo on the kit. You've gotta'love Buddy's playing.

  • BR = Grand Master par excellance.

  • Genius!

  • Even though I prefer Buddy's drum solo from the album "Live at Ronnie Scott's". Seeing Buddy on this video blows me away. He was at the peak of his career.

  • The album version blows compared to this show-stopper.

  • Absolutely correct.

  • looks like a bit of krupa influence the way buddy is playing starting at 2:50

  • Agreed.

  • I remember the solo on the album too but this was pretty damm impressive! To this day no one can touch him.

  • By the way, that is one fucking HARD chart to pull off!!

  • Fucking AWESOME!!!!!!!!

  • pure musical genius.

seems no one will ever top his creativity, speed, & touch. for the "Time Being" and,

    maybe forever.

he made me start(drums) and he made me quit.

  • The album version is superior. Solo consists of an accented press roll that starts at a whisper and builds like a wave. It's a continuity of the chart. The solo here seems more visually geared for the audience.

  • I agree, the album version of this solo IS superior, despite being the same live material. Perhaps the fact that he was being recorded for an album is why?

  • Brian....This video blows me away!

In 1972, I bought my first jazz albums: Maynard 1, "Stick It" and "Live at Ronnie Scott's". I was hooked on Buddy and Maynard forever!

Seeing this band (Especially with Lin Biviano) perform this song for the first time has BLOWN ME AWAY!!!

I know EVERY note on this album. What a thrill to watch. Thanks Brian!

  • Soo glad you posted this video. Great stuff.

  • can i just ask, what difference does his snare make? i notice that its slightly tilted. I've only been drumming for 11 months so im not sure what the difference is, and im 14! all advice needed, comment my channel, i'll stick a vid up soon.

oh and buddy is by far better than anyone!

  • As far as I can tell, he does this so he can play rimshots easily despite being elevated above the set. I set this up when my stool is too high for me to play with the stick parallel to the snare

  • unbelievable. the greatest ever, hands down

  • LOL, he's using the Roger's bass drum pedal he stole from Ellis Tollin.

  • Simply Brilliant! What a legend, thanks for posting:)

  • When you watch something like this that's nearly 40 years old, it makes you realize just how far music has fallen.

  • @drummerfan277 Agreed.

  • @drummerfan277 Exactly..........Man, is that the perfect comment or what? I saw BR 3 times live..................I have never seen anything comparable since! "Dancing Men" is the single greatest audio any human can absorb!

  • I've never seen anyone put as much passion into their playing as Buddy and his band. It's amazing.

  • Great camera angle of Buddy's left hand! Something to be learned there.

  • This particular band that Buddy had, the 70-71edition, was one of his best, and I firmly believe that at this time, there was not a better band of any kind anywhere on the planet. This was as good as music could possibly be played.

  • did someone actually bring up Travis Barker as a comparable drummer...yeah ...ok...get real...

  • Buddy Rich was and still is the worlds greatest drummer....somebody out there get someone who can do the same as Buddy Rich did...it's abit looking for god...you won't find it....cos they don't exist.

  • thetruthboss -- loved the comment "cos they don't exist" , and the lower case "g" in god.

A fellow Atheist, are you? Just curious.

However, you are correct about Buddy -- no one will ever do what this man did. Ever. That whole era of big bands, dedication to the craft, and pure determination are long gone.

  • I think the whole concept of getting anyone to do the same as anyone else is pretty stupid.

I think on the same token to say "there will never be another Buddy rich" is, well, ok that is also pretty redundant

be the best "you" that you can be, THAT is what buddy was all about

  • scorpions84.....I agree with wavingclouds....you're an idiot..anybody who knows about drums knows that Travis Barker is a shit drummer...he has to have a dozen drums double bass drum and he needs to knock the crap out of that to get a tune...look at BR..just a few drums and great Technique..case proven.

  • The band is really outstanding here...a better mix than on the Rich In London recording...never heard Buddy play this live, only the RIL recording so I kinda of miss the snare build at the beginning of his solo but as always with Buddy, always new ideas! I miss him.

  • Damn! I've got some practicing to do haha!

  • MInd blowing!!!

  • scorpions84-meet you anytime and have a drum off. With an opinion like yours I would drum you off the stage with one hand. And I have not practicedin 11 years. Shame on you.

  • btw..what he's doing is called..TECHNIQUE

  • Precision,INNATE MEMORY & EAR ABILITY ,This is a musician transferring musicality on the drum set like no other : take your langs ,barkers and dbl. bass players [crutches],and can em to the shitter.........

  • I ,never practice with mirrors ,they say the universe is mirroring our thoughts, MAYBE LOOK A LITTLE DEEPER SMARTY.

  • nobody will pay attention to your comment dude. because you just advertised to the world how ignorant you are.

  • Someday I will play as good as he did.

  • fucking great

  • THANK YOU BRIAN!!! YOU ARE THE BEST. I have been through 7 copies of this album. It is the coolest big band album. What a challange to other bands. I need a time machine.

  • what album is this?

  • Rich In London-Originally on RCA. Single Album in America and a Double album in Europe.

  • excellent! thank you!! It's definetly my next acquisition..

  • If you can find the double one get that. I had the LP but My borther-in-law stole it 11 years ago. If it is on CD let me know. I know the US version is on CD these days. Rich in Lobdon (LIve at Ronnie Scotts). On the double album they include Buddy speaking after both sets which is great.

  • The album version is different but it was his best!

  • i admire that man's talent so much...he definatly had that bit more talent and ability to do what he did on his drums.

  • This is definately one of the best video performances from Buddy. I notice that he seems to be sitting much lower than he usually did when he played.

  • no it's just where the cameras are..he had one of those canister thrones that wasn't adjustable, not sure if it's 23" or 24" high but def. one of the two heights.

  • I used to have one of these Slingerland canister thrones. They were 24" high.

  • that solo and the ending of that tune by Buddy is just Incredible ! He was the Best .

  • Man, that was great! What video did you get this off of? Is it still available?

  • if anyone has got the show on tape id love to see it this show with time being in it,was from a series called sounds for saturday on the bbc uk

  • if i am honest i much prefer the way buddy played it live at ronnies

    but its still good drumming

  • Rich in London... my favorite album of all time

  • love the band love buddy hate the 70's filming games....I think I'm sea sick

  • Yet again I'm left wondering... "How the hell does he do that!!!!????????"

  • Thanks so much!

  • This is definately Buddy at his best

  • Brian: This is superb. Now that you've whet our appetite, it would be wonderful to have the full course. Would be grateful if you could post other tunes from this concert.
