Hard to believe but this sound track isn't sung by the man in the movie that is shown singing it! His real name is Erland Van Lidth, he was an opera singer. If you listen closely you will notice it is actually Gene Wilder. Go to 0:38 and when he says angles in heaven it is easier to determine who it is. Gene wilder could sing and they put his song over Erland's voice to be funny.

Just found a track listing that says this was dorian holley.....also saw other articles saying it was earland ........some needs to solve this mystery.......it was definately one of them though

This was earland singing......i read an old interview where they were talking about him singing it.......its definately a white guys voice where as dorian holley has the typical black soul voice

Thank you for posting this beautiful, haunting song without the annoying actors' voices from the movie (love Stir Crazy'). I'd saved the audio and have been listening to it for years, always having to just try and ignore the voices. Regardless who sang it, they had the voice of angel! i remember watching stir crazy in my teens, as all pryor movies and then dorian holly broke out in the song....blew me the hell away...in the cowboy version theres another verse, something about when they hang me hang me high so i can see her wave (in the format of the song naturally)....but i like this version the best...anyone know where i can buy?

this might sound weird....but whenever my 3yr old niece is sleepy, i sing this song to her, while shes in my arms while watching mickey mouse clubhouse, after i sing it to her i hum it, shes out before the 2nd verse lol instead of "roses love sunshine" i say "lily loves sunshine" her name's lily :-) she falls asleep everytime

@makethemsqueal I have the sound track and its listed as dorian holly, for the movie sir crazy, and this voice sounds the same as the one used in stir crazy, check out "soundcheck collector" the voice for this song is listed as dorian holly, type in "Birmingham Jail" and tlk with the user willyohio who personally knows dorian holly he can tell you as well.

i dont know for a fact though. only what i read on sites regarding the actor.

said he pre recordered the song for the film. he not singing it live in the movie.
