Is it me or is Richard Widmark wearing the EXACT same costume he had on in The Law and Jake Wade? (Another good Kelley flick. He's plays a deranged sociopath with and itchy trigger finger)
bad part is henry fonda wasnt fast. deforest kelly was they useda cut to make it look like that. anthony quinn was faster audie murphy was faster glenn ford was fastest but deforest kelly was good. really good
You know, I wasn't really a huge fan of Westerns, though I used to watch them with my grandfather, but ever since I became a De Kelley fan, I think cowboys are pretty awesome.
the symbolism in this is great, the scenes with de kelly are the best in the whole film, hes a gorgeous human being ( and this speech is crazy amazing....paint those handles black)
that's so cool he was a western actor before Star Trek, he did a great job. I'm reading De's biography right now and I just got done reading about that scene.
How the hell did he get the job of ship's doctor with an attitude like that ? They were supposed to "seek out new life and new civilisations", not challenge them to gunfights......
When he went to the canteen for lunch that day they gave him a standing ovation. Fonda later told him he'd danced with the Princess at a party, and Kelley could stop worrying -- she didn't know that word in English.
Okay, I am sorry that was so long, but I kept on going over the character count =D
Oh, I love Curley! =D I read the book to see what happened to Kelley's character. Curley died in the book. I was so sad when I read that he got shot down by Fonda. Yep, Warlock's my favorite western ever since I got it knowing Kelley was in it. And for Batman fans, Frank Gorshin is Billy Gannon, the guy who stood up to take on Fonda.
Oh and Frank Gorshin is The Riddler if you didn't know
As the gang came roaring into town and turned to tie up, Kelley accidentally spurred the horse next to his while dismounting; that horse kicked and threw him into the air, where he did a flip and narrowly escaped bashing his head on the tie rail. The director, Dmytryk, sauntered up to where he landed, looked down at him and after ascertaining that he wasn't killed, drawled, "I'm sure glad I hired real cowboys."
Before filming the scene where Kelley draws on Fonda, Dmytryk had told him to be sure he had the scene down well because Princess Sophia of Greece was going to be on the set. Kelley thought he was joking or something, but sure enough, there she was with her retinue on the staircase as he was doing his big scene. But he'd been working hard on getting the revolver flyaway trick down, and forgot about them while he concentrated on the move.
The flyaway went perfectly, but as he backed away afterwards, he tripped over a chair and yelped, "Shit!" at having spoiled the scene. Then he remembered the Princess, and without getting up, just crawled off the set under the batwing doors. Dmytryk came and found him and said, "De, I bet you sat up all night last night trying to think of what to say in front of the princess."
