FYI, Rickey Medlocke and Greg T. Walker used to play for Lynyrd Skynyrd early on. Rickey played drums. Ricky is back now with Skynyrd on guitar. I had a backstage pass at a concert they played near Montgomery, AL. Some great photos on my website.
I had the good fortune of seeing them live once in 1998, and this song blew me away. The ending jam on this is on the level of that in Freebird. It's too bad we don't see enough straightforward rock these days.
These older bands were tottaly awesome. I'm 29 and find most of todays songs to be made from a bad cookie cutter. Songs like this one were so original and had feeling and talent.
are any of these old Hippies, still alive, wish there was music being made like this in todays world, rappin nigros, skin heads an punks suck the life out of rockin music
This is a classic song, that defines what a touring band lives through. It is not about southern bands or northern bands. As far as talent goes, Molly Hatchet is the most talented, musically, bands to date. I say this as a musician myself since age 7. And I played in a band called Southern Cross. You might have heard of us….or heard us.
@agentshavers what in the hell are you talking about? skynyrd blows the doors off of molly hatchet, even if ronnie hadnt died had and could of properly groomed hatchet they still wouldnt have jack squat on skynyrd. just between steve, gary, allen, and ed alone, just the guitarists by themeselves. i duno, hatchet? really?
@Royales00 What the hell are you talking about? It dosnt matter who is better than who. As a matter of fact for you to even think about chastising someone for an opinion other than yours, is pretty much fucking intolerance of others on your part. I see theres a Bible, I see theres a Chiltons auto , Mr Goodwrench, but let me look again , just a second. 1, 2,, 3,, Nope no book written on life called Royales00. You should show more respect.
@pingcho Thank you. Just in my analysis of watching the live Hatchet DVD I purchased, they are not simply “Jamming”. These guys have their lead work written in musical notation. Their tightness, sound, is not sloppy in the least. I wasn’t even applying names or reputations to my statements. I could have been blindfolded for what it’s worth. I love Skynyrd, sure, they were pioneers in the genre we all love.
@agentshavers Yep they were very very good but I like a lot of music, I was a young teen when these guys started cranking up their tunes. Bobby Barth, Rick Medlocke, Dave Hulce, Frank Marino. which were from Axe, Blackfoot,Molly Hatchet, and Mahogny Rush.
While Skynard were awsome, they were only a part of it all that helped to make southern rock. You tha Man guy. Thanks.
@pingcho I really wish I knew what you are talking about, chiltons auto sounds pretty awesome. steve gaines would bitch slap you for the nonsense you're talking about.
@Royales00 .it means dumbass that there is a book that teaches you how to fix cars which sometimes is nessary in life,,, and there is a bible for some inspiration, but I dont see a book titled Royales00 which offers anything of signifiance in anything except a opinion which smells like an ass hole. You opinion is noted. You want respect you give to get. Learn how to respect what others think. Steve Gaines was just a man, who was talented with a Guitar. He would also show respect for others.
@Royales00 HUmm all I did was act towards you like you did to ahentshavers, cant take the heat huh,,,,, at one point in your life you arnt gonna be able to talk shit and not get called for it. Yeah I will disrespect a disrespectful person.
@33niggerkiller Why does everyone feel they need to cross reference southern rock acts with Skynryd? Oh and by the way you can enjoy the delights of gritty southern rock without being a racist!! That's relly not cool!!
@InTimeAllMustChange What the fuck are you trying to prove, i just say that the solo of this song is long and cool and it remind me of free bird s solo, which is long and cool. What are you saying
@33niggerkiller I agree, it is a cool track, and i love Skynryd, in fact i'm listening to One More from The Road at the moment, it's just everyone likens any southern rock outfit to them and it grates on me, sorry if i offended you!! Oh and the racist comment stems from your user name, if your'e not a racist may i suggest you change your name!? If you are then that's cool keep the name but don't expect it to go unnoticed by people!! Have a nice day.
These guys used to be my next door neighbors. They were almost never home but when they were they always tried to make a play for the smokin' hot ass i had at my crib... epic days...
tremendous song, it really is the best! As far as im concerned, this should be reveared the same as Free bird, Stairway to heaven, smoke on the water....
You make a good point. Also; the Allman Bros are from Macon Georgia (Not far from Jacksonville FL), & if you want to take it further south & west, The Outlaws are from Tampa FL). I'd be willing to bet that between 1968-1975 there were quite a few bands from that area that were cut from the same cloth, but only few made it big. Sure wish I was there during that time period to catch those bands perform.
Has anyone really thought about how influential Jacksonville, FL has been on music? Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Blackfoot, etc. I know there were lots of changes in personnel, some by necessity but so many of their songs have stood the test of time and still get radio play. It must have been something in the water down there.
one of those songs, when you really get into it, you wonder just when itll end,,, you dont want it to,,, at all,,, unless you need to go pee or something.
@DracoBorealis Not only wipe the floor - they are all over them like white on rice. These are true musicians, not the crap that's out there now. I can't stop listening to this song -- I must be OCD -- over and over.
This is a great performance of this song. I seen Blackfoot live back in the day in New Jersey, just outside of Hackettstown. In this video Medlocke and company really rip it up. I always loved the whole Stikes ablum. Ricky was a showman with great stage presence. Nothing technical just good hard Southern Rock music.
@porkwizard1 Totally! I saw them B.I.D. as well, in NH. They played like it was a big deal and my ears rang for days. A classic great rock band--up there with the best.
I first heart of this band in 81-82 in Ukiah, Ca ifornia. Beautiful Country to hear the Band Blackfoot ," Blackfoot Strikesl" album was beautiful and the right Sound System these, this band of musicianswere jamming true rock and roll. Yes. awesome
i'm sure i said this already, but at the risk of pissing off even more ppl,I'll say he reminds me of the great Mark Farner from the Michigan band Grand Funk Railroad
You know it was easy for these folk to get quality instruments back then....American made guitars were everywhere.Nowadays a guy really has to watch out for what he buys.If your not paying attention...BAM...you just payed 500 bucks for a chinese piece of crap! What I would give for that Gibson Explorer that he singer is playing.
1st song I heard from this band, so glad I found them. This song is awesome and one of the best pieces of guitar work I've ever heard! 4:30min guitar solo? Yes please!
Awesome song. We're stuck in Philly with a classic rock station called WMGK that plays nothin' but Elton John,Billy Joel and other junk and forgets about great classics like this!
too bad they were too obessessed with the scorpions prior to the blackfoot appearance that were unable to give any social helping to their prosperity in the cruel music industry. OBV all the tools love blackfoot when they come on the stage of their favorite little popular band, cuz they're total idiots.
Im sorry but these boys werent in Skynyrd or the Outlaws league, cant come close to delivering LIVE like the Great southern rockers. Medlock always reminded me of a Nugent wannabe.
@steelermule i dont think they wanted to be like anyone other than who they were. Original sound, excellent musicians that delivered to packed houses. And the lead singer really brings a Native Wail to rock n Roll. I guess they wanted to be who they were and do what they loved to do: play music.
Saw them on the "Strikes" tour at Hare Arena in Dayton, Ohio, circa 1981!! Out on tour with a then very, very young Def Leppard!! What a show that was!! Everybody smoking weed or messed up on Quaalude's!! LOL. Both band's blew the doors out of Hare Arena that night!!
When I saw Blackfoot in the early 80s, the coliseum was sold out. During the slow part of the song at 3:10 it was prolonged a bit and I'll never forget this part. Every Bic lighter in the house was lit and as I looked around, no one said a word. The band had the complete, undivided and silent attention of everyone in the coliseum. Front to back, side to side and top to bottom. I'll bet you at least 40,000 lit up the place. One word describes this experience. Unfuckingbelievable!
I know the song, but not the band members. The lead singer looks like a rock version of Merle Haggard, I hope that's a compliment to both men. I think if he were country he would be the Hag, and similarly so.
@Elizabelizard im 50, and i was. i love trhis, but poor sad ricky sold out, and squanders his singing talent, and his lifelong project, blackfoot., left behind. now he needs to write a song, called left behind.
@Syzygy60 They grew up in Jacksonville Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet. Blackfoot and 38 special were all from Jacksonville. The Allman Brothers band even formed in Jacksonville althou most of them were from Macon Ga.
Yeah Man, I was born in Macon Ga., & grew up in Columbus Ga. All those bands were what I listened to as a teen. I saw Blackfoot many, MANY times. They were a great band. Ricky Medlock is awesome, still today.
Highway Song Live Album has to be one of the greatest live albums ever. If G'n'R didnt get influenced by it then I retract all statements of its greatness..

I know the song, but not the band members. The lead singer looks like a rock version of Merle Haggard, I hope that's a compliment to both men. I think if he were country he would be the Hag, and similarly so.

where u think they grew up?
Syzygy60 9 months ago
@Syzygy60 They grew up in Jacksonville Florida. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet. Blackfoot and 38 special were all from Jacksonville. The Allman Brothers band even formed in Jacksonville althou most of them were from Macon Ga.
rivermandan9 8 months ago
@rivermandan9
