Hi nice tutorial. I used it for the start to get things up and running and later add more shares to the smb.conf. This is just what I need to start my journey into SAMBA as PDC...many thanks...
Greate tutorial. Let me ask you something. If i name the workgroup as test it works. If i name it test.com, i can't add the machines to the domain. The windows says it could not found the domain controller. Do i need to set up some dns servers?
ok I am having a little trouble, when i go to type in my domain and hit ok the next window will pop up and tell me to enter a user name and password so i do root and the password but it fails to connect?? It says it does not exist or could not be contacted, I know it sees it because the login window would not even come up if i typed in the wrong domain, i can also ping the server just fine? is there any way you can help me? thanks - Justin
I actually figured out that Windows Vista Business can join your linux domain and Windows 7 can to. To join windows 7 you will need a professional version of Windows 7. After that from the run menu type secpol.msc. Next expand the section that says Local Policies and then Security Options. On the right hand menu, select Microsoft Network Client: Send Unencrypted passwords to to third-party SMB servers. That shoud do the trick!
Hey, I cant write in the smb.conf file, it says that its only readable, then i can ignore it but wont let me delete lines, just the content, and when i want to write quit, it says E45 readonly option is set (! ) to override
When i attempt to join it with your .conf file, and it tells me that "An Active Directory Domain Controller" for the domain could not be contacted, im using Windows 7 Ultimate.. HELP
The following error ocurred attempting to join the domain TEST. Tjhe specified domain either does not exist or culd not be contacted. Could you help me with that error on windows 7? or make a tutorial just to join the domain?
just wanted to say thanks for the tutorials. I am a student and have recently been doing a lot more with unix and linux. been dealing more with windows DC's but wanted to check it out on linux and this works for me!
Also if you ever have spare time I think a cool tutorial would be setting up openVPN (not the access server edition) on this server and using it as a vpn server. anyways thanks again! This helped me for one of my projects!
When I attempt to connect to the domain it prompts me for the username and password but then it says that it can't locate the domain "sciro" (being the domain).
Thank you for making this tutorial. I will go to try this for a setup with a couple of users and there is one thing I don't fully understand: while you only added the "student" account to samba with smbpasswd, you added the "test" account both as a unix account, as well as a samba account. But they both seem to work in the same manner? So why this difference?
Also, do you know if a similar approach will work with Windows 7 clients as well?
Hi, nice tutorial. im getting a error doing the configuration. I have Samba install and my XP machine can ping the ip of my server but insn't ping the damain name. When i try to add my xp machine to the domain i say that he can't find it. Is possible that you share your smb.conf file? Best regards and once again nice tutorial
