  • aww Jobidaker and MartyPotatoes are friends :)

  • i wish i could get together my buds and just jam soulfully like this.. but everyone i know just wants to play powerchords on guitar.. *sigh*

  • @dfontaine38 i play thrash metal but at times me and some of my band mates play jazz

  • Quit that voice at 4:36 ¬¬ we want more Jazz not tha guy talking =(

  • Jazz vs Rap/Hip-Hop:

-Jazz musicians play their own music AND most sing well.

-Rap musicians get their music made FOR them and have nothing important to TALK about. Cuz thats what they do... they dont SING!

So if you took the time to appreciate the GREAT talent these musicians have, you will find the melody quite tranquil and wonderful to listen to!

    Jazz is... REAL MUSIC!

Thumbs to the sky for JAZZ!!!

  • be disagreeable......

  • Notice how even back in the those days; no color discrimination between musicians. All that matters was whether or not you could play.

  • At 6:44 Ray Brown, during his solo, completes an ascending run and then drops his right (plucking) hand…, yet the solo keeps on going, after he dropped his hand to his side?

    Why?

  • @108jimabe Because the film is out of sync with the sound. I'm still glad we've got it though. It's a record of two great artists and performances. Bird's first "SQUAWK!" is very transgressive.

  • @108jimabe the picture was recorded after the music was recorded, everyone is essentially trying to finger along with their own solos essentially

  • Some videos CAN'T be disliked

  • Unfortunately we have had a few generations who have no concept of music. If the rhythm is not louder than all the rest of the instruments, they can't hear it.

  • OMG!!! Simply beautiful. These ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE AND GREAT artists make jazz sound simple and easy. That's far from the case. There are about 25.000 hours of practice/playing in the background of such musicians. Neurologically, it has been proven by specialists in music/neurology/psychology that you can fully grasp your instrument starting at 10.000 hours of practice left behind.

  • thanks for posting this ,its especially great to see Bill Harris on trombone-- one of my favs when I was an aspiring jazz trombonists.

  • @vstarsteve50 Uh-oh...another reformed trombonist...

  • Fitzgerald's skatting is the definite highlight imo.

  • the Other tenor player on the last clip??

  • Comment removed

  • Birds smirking at 'Bean' having to lip sync his solo and probably wondering how to bluff it when it's his turn.

  • It's great to have the full session and ont the sample usually shown in documentaries about Jazz...

  • I may be a teen who listens to metal, but man i tell you this is some good music. Takes skill and a lot of soul. I love it. good chill music.

  • @MrIanbevan

prolly cause they all dead forty years or more lol

  • splendid

  • I think when people listen to those Buddy Rich bus "rant" tapes they should put it in context, its not simply a madman flying off the handle. He wasnt lying when he said he had played with the best people in the business.

  • @selmansax He never knew how to read music and knew all the Big Band arrangements by heart...Buddy is just not like the rest of us

  • impressionnant budy rich!!!!!!! quelle énergie !!

  • Especial...

  • I love the brush sticks

  • Kingny17 the search enginedoesn't work on priorities, hannah probably had more search requests due to a much younger and larger fanbase. Hence her name appearing first as a suggestion. Its just a search program.....R.I.P Mr Jones

  • as a testament to that statement. when you type in the first three letters of hanks name hannah montana comes up. priorities much?

  • 2:59 should be charlie's immortalized image

  • I read about this footage in a book about Parker, but the book said that the footage was silent, as the audio was missing. Nice to hear this track, then.

  • Lester Young is a soulful motherfucker.

  • Like butter left in the sun. RIP Mr Hank Jones.

  • RIP Mr Jones. Heaven got a bit more melodic and cool today.

  • Only when Rich goes into his solo do we see a reaction from Parker, around 3:37.

  • Isn't this one of the few recorded, as in TV, shows of Bird performing? He is just beyond belief. I understand why that guy threw his sax in the river after hearing Bird play at the club (from the film 'Bird').

  • Five people disliked this. Tell me who they are so I can kick them.

  • Super, super, super--and then in comes Ella and the roof goes skyhigh!!

  • parker is so high haha

  • Bean's opening solo just floors me every time I hear it!

  • thanks, i really needed a jazz musician for my school project :D

  • LEGENDS of JAZZ, thanks for beautiful music and strong story

  • wow... this sometimes makes me wish I were in my teens around this time instead of now.

  • why?

  • so you don't think music was in its purest form around that time?

It sure as hell beats most of the idiotic shit I hear on the radio thats for sure...

  • yah thats true i didnt no thats what yu wer trying to say tho yah i agree i love that music

  • bird look high as a mofo

  • Meeen, Bird and Hawkins were bad asses

  • da brennt nix an

  • Does anyone else feel that Bird totally cut off Hawkins?? lol

  • I think it was supposed to be sorta like that, but he came in a little early.

  • i do

  • ok, good. lol

    Not the only one :)

  • i feel just like 12:38 this morning

  • it's a treat to be able to see as well as hear these masters

  • i love ella fitzgerald beautiful voice!

  • this is cool, although ive never listened to jazz

  • the blues change at 5:40 drives me crazy it's so niceee hahaha

  • Comment removed

  • ohhh hay personal opinion :D

    still sounds nice though

  • Jazz + Coffee

I love the simple things in life

  • jazz is far from simple, my friend

  • @jobidaker Thankfully jazz is both simple and complex. You never know what you are going to get!

  • @jobidaker The true sign of a great artist is one who makes it look easy. To the fan it needs to appear simple and that's a good thing.

  • @jobidaker

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.

    —Charles Mingus

  • @MartyPotatoes I am doing exactly the same, jazz is simple, listen to the head, and then listen to people take turns to improv around it.

When listening to coltrane do you NEED to know what mode he is playing in,

when listening to monk do you NEED to know his chords

know just listen to it, if you want to play it, then learn the theory, but it's not hard and it won't make you love jazz more!

  • @MartyPotatoes : me three....

  • ugh.theres one song and idont know the name of it :(.

its pretty famous, they also play it in movie ssometimes,i think its played with a saxophone..

i hate it. its impossible to find it!

  • Is it baker street

  • IM STILL WAITING FOR Humphrey Bogart TO POP OUT AND SAY HEY LADIES AND GENTLEMEN IM DOING THIS COUNTDOWN AT 5:17-5:21

  • bebop for sure thats crazy chromatic stuff dude i play its pretty difficult tho =)

  • This seems to be some JATP

  • Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Bud Powell, James P. Johnson (pianists), Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Joe Pass, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins. The most of those are modern jazz musicians. There is also traditional hot jazz; maybe it's not as "complicated" as you want, but it's absolutely fun (I don't have enough characters to write!). Just look for "bebop", "dixieland", "hard bop", "stride".

  • Look for "BeBop" in google.

  • there are many type of jazz,go google it....^^

  • This is historic. There is no other word for it.

  • That Prez and his Pork pie Hat...

  • They gave so much to the world

Bird's music will live on forever

  • OMG its DR KING!!!

  • THIS IS WHAT HEAVEN MUST FEEL LIKE

  • Comment removed

  • so does no one know where this is from ?

  • sooooo good

  • what is this from exactly?

  • this film clip is from a DVD called Norman Granz : Improvisation. It is a two CD set with some excellent footage. you can probably order it from a music instrument store.

  • cheers

  • The kids these days, they listen to the rap music. So they don't know what the jazz is all about.

  • not totally true, I love rap, metal, dance, classical and jazz.I especially love playing jazz ^^

  • It was a saying i got from the great Bill Cosby.

  • the kids in what days? ever since Rock and Roll came out, The current teenage Generation listened to their music.

  • Shut the fuck up and read the second comment i posted. The quote was from the great Bill Cosby.

  • hey, i'm 17, and i listen to jazz all the time. it helps me relax, and just clear my mind from thoughts.

  • Excellent and thanks alot for sharing such a masterpiece with us, youtubers!

  • Ella took Bill Harris's last lick and used it for her opener lol

  • these guys shit on people with their skill. seriously man they do

  • don't really understand your lingo. do you have a problem with URANUS

  • 11:39

    Prez plays a magnificent lick

i may just copy it lol

  • Just because you don't comprehend or enjoy something doesn't make it "random." Everything you're hearing here is built on solid chordal and harmonic foundations. Every note makes sense in a very tangible, explainable way. The beauty of jazz is that, even though it seems arcane and inaccessible at first (and I'm a layman myself), it proves not to be that way at all once you open up your soul and just listen. It is coldly logical, emotionally deep, and playfully whimsical, all at once!

  • your either Ignorant or stupid, one of the 2

you already watched this video, so you know about it,,,so i guess you just a dumbass then

  • Hi, can someone enlighten me as to what tune the first saxophonist is playing? Also which subgenre of jazz isit most appropriately classified under? Thanks a bunch.

  • Hey the first tune that they play is a song called Ballade and this jazz is under the genre of swing/bebop. Enjoy!

  • Classic, great, fantastic. This is a collection of masters playing wonderful jazz. I love them all. Thanks so much for posting this.

  • buddys swingin on just the hats

  • I don't see what it matters to you, you may not like it but others may. If that makes us a bunch of random, be boob bop, fast playin people then so be it, that is our thoughts.

    (this is for bucketsbucketbuckets)

  • I don't see what it matters to you, you may not like it but others may. If that makes us a bunch of random, be boob bop, fast playin people then so be it, that is our thoughts.

  • What kind of music do you hear man? metal and stuff like that? cmon theres nothing special about it. jazz is pure art.

  • you're a fucking moron

  • and you're a fucking moron. go put on some of your britney cds...

  • billie holiday gave lester the name "prez". he gave the name "lady day".

  • why are you on here if you dont like jazz man =p

  • Nobody can take it on Ella !! One of the greatest voices of all time !! Charlie Parker's the man !

  • I love that face bird makes during bean's solo...classic.

  • i love the face ella makes at the end of the scatting... its like "oh yeah, im so good". lol.

  • "oh, make me a mask" Dylan Thomas....Let's read a Julio Cortazar's tale named El Perseguidor

  • Dang, that's some good jazz! I'm having trouble finding good jazz artists. can anyone give me a few really good jazz players sothat I can listen to their music?

  • Chet Baker is an outstanding jazz artist i reccomend you look him up :)

  • Miles Davis. Charlie Parker. John Coltrane.

  • thanks, I'll definetly check them out.

  • depending on the time period this was recorded, Oscar had not yet played with this line up. The JATP concerts started w/ Jones on piano, and then moved on to Peterson after about five years.

  • you'r right, but anyway, its fantastic. we can clearly see that when Ella Fitzgerald improvised, they never improvised the same way, so that they are bad in play back, its so comic. these gods are bad in something about music, can yu believe it????!!!!!!

  • i'm not religius, but man i belive in jazz gods. OH MY GOD!!!

  • fantastic video! whats the first song they are playing?

  • Classic footage, i've never seen all of before

All from Kansas City, Missouri - where jazz grew up and where sax is king.

  • fuck you saying brian regan isnt funny

  • Every artist a legend

  • A terrific film, one of the best

    I have seen

  • Type in search: Jazz is my religion

Piet Kuiters Modern Jazzgroup. Amsterdam 1964. Very Cool.

    Best regards Django.

  • damn. ella swings like nobody's biz.

  • Great combo of artists. Great to hear the Bird and Hawk trade licks. Always a treat to hear the Prez, Ella, Sweets, and Hank Jones. Yes they are different styles, but what a sound! Can't believe how young Buddy Rich looks. A stellar drummer even at that age. Good fine Fakeplasticlee!

  • Wonderful !!!!!!

  • I saw Hank Jones play with a big band in Knoxville TN in 2005, he still sounds great. He was touring with Joe Lavano just last year - I think he's 91.

  • Mad props for that guy. Is he touring already?

  • i didn't know rich could hold a pair of brushes!!!

  • Thanks thanks thanks for sharing such a good video !!!

Could someobody tell me the setlist please ? ( don't blame me plz :) )

  • This might be the amazing video I've seen on YouTube to date.

  • Lest we forget.... Bird was and is to this day the greatest jazz improvisor. He basically created the modern jazz language

  • Otnas, not to take away a word you have said abour Bird, but Hawk and Prez were great innovators too - the bop generation stood on their shoulders to achieve what they did. This is a wonderful session. Many thanks to the poster.

  • Sure Man if you slow down Bird he sounds a bit like Lester etc,but in terms of what he was doing at the time ,he stood out on his own. Apart from say Louis Armstrong most of the other greats had comtempories just as influential You only have to listen to the two opening solos to see what I mean

  • in my opinion... Tatum was.

  • Este ´antológico, magistral, fantástico.

    M Jacques

  • excellent.

  • does flip philips still lives?

  • Didn't know Rich played with the Bop guys. Very cool.

  • superb video.... coleman and parker... majical

  • Bird and Buddy run riot. that's funny.

I also like Edison's style of playing.

  • Great video! What is this from?

  • le bonheur merci you tube je passe des moment formidable

  • This is awesome, Bird and Hawkins together! I'm in heaven.

    Just cool.

  • just wonderful -thanks

  • Pres, or Prez, was Lester Young long of the Basie Band, friend of Lady Day, and major influence on tenor players to this day. He died of life's complications in 1959 - the same year that Billy Holiday died of pretty much the same thing.

  • hank jones sounds great, he has such a good sense of time. Every line or idea he plays just flows like water.
