At 6:44 Ray Brown, during his solo, completes an ascending run and then drops his right (plucking) hand…, yet the solo keeps on going, after he dropped his hand to his side?
@108jimabe Because the film is out of sync with the sound. I'm still glad we've got it though. It's a record of two great artists and performances. Bird's first "SQUAWK!" is very transgressive.
Unfortunately we have had a few generations who have no concept of music. If the rhythm is not louder than all the rest of the instruments, they can't hear it.
OMG!!! Simply beautiful. These ABSOLUTELY UNIQUE AND GREAT artists make jazz sound simple and easy. That's far from the case. There are about 25.000 hours of practice/playing in the background of such musicians. Neurologically, it has been proven by specialists in music/neurology/psychology that you can fully grasp your instrument starting at 10.000 hours of practice left behind.
I think when people listen to those Buddy Rich bus "rant" tapes they should put it in context, its not simply a madman flying off the handle. He wasnt lying when he said he had played with the best people in the business.
Kingny17 the search enginedoesn't work on priorities, hannah probably had more search requests due to a much younger and larger fanbase. Hence her name appearing first as a suggestion. Its just a search program.....R.I.P Mr Jones
I read about this footage in a book about Parker, but the book said that the footage was silent, as the audio was missing. Nice to hear this track, then.
Isn't this one of the few recorded, as in TV, shows of Bird performing? He is just beyond belief. I understand why that guy threw his sax in the river after hearing Bird play at the club (from the film 'Bird').
Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Earl Hines, Fats Waller, Bud Powell, James P. Johnson (pianists), Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Joe Pass, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins. The most of those are modern jazz musicians. There is also traditional hot jazz; maybe it's not as "complicated" as you want, but it's absolutely fun (I don't have enough characters to write!). Just look for "bebop", "dixieland", "hard bop", "stride".
this film clip is from a DVD called Norman Granz : Improvisation. It is a two CD set with some excellent footage. you can probably order it from a music instrument store.

Just because you don't comprehend or enjoy something doesn't make it "random." Everything you're hearing here is built on solid chordal and harmonic foundations. Every note makes sense in a very tangible, explainable way. The beauty of jazz is that, even though it seems arcane and inaccessible at first (and I'm a layman myself), it proves not to be that way at all once you open up your soul and just listen. It is coldly logical, emotionally deep, and playfully whimsical, all at once!
Hi, can someone enlighten me as to what tune the first saxophonist is playing? Also which subgenre of jazz isit most appropriately classified under? Thanks a bunch.
I don't see what it matters to you, you may not like it but others may. If that makes us a bunch of random, be boob bop, fast playin people then so be it, that is our thoughts.

Jazz vs Rap/Hip-Hop:
-Jazz musicians play their own music AND most sing well.
-Rap musicians get their music made FOR them and have nothing important to TALK about. Cuz thats what they do... they dont SING!
So if you took the time to appreciate the GREAT talent these musicians have, you will find the melody quite tranquil and wonderful to listen to!
Jazz is... REAL MUSIC!
Thumbs to the sky for JAZZ!!!

Notice how even back in the those days; no color discrimination between musicians. All that matters was whether or not you could play.

Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity.

zensparkle2481 1 year ago 4
@MartyPotatoes I am doing exactly the same, jazz is simple, listen to the head, and then listen to people take turns to improv around it.
When listening to coltrane do you NEED to know what mode he is playing in,
when listening to monk do you NEED to know his chords
know just listen to it, if you want to play it, then learn the theory, but it's not hard and it won't make you love jazz more!
